A rant about Elijah

Well I guess this is a short rant but is this the fourth time I have introduced my 11 month old son as [name]Elijah[/name] and people have asked if he’s a girl. This is the very reason I don’t care for unisex names. I having to specify gender when I am referring to someone. [name]Elijah[/name] is an awesome biblical character and I have never ever heard it on a girl. It just drives me nuts that all these people think my son is a girl! Is he going to run into this problem later in life? Erg! So anyway. Granted the first few times the mistake was by children under 10 so I guess that they just wouldn’t realize [name]Elijah[/name] was a male name because of its soft ending, but this latest mistake was by a grown women with children of her own. I don’t know if this is relevant to anything but it has been very frustrating to me.

Oh, I’m so sorry to hear what’s been happening, [name]Sara[/name]! I think [name]Elijah[/name] is a wonderful, handsome name, and for what it’s worth, [name]Elijah[/name] is 100% boy to me. (I can’t even imagine [name]Elijah[/name] on a girl!)

Like you said, [name]Elijah[/name] is a Biblical name with a strong history, so I’m really surprised to hear that people weren’t aware that it’s a boys’ name. (At the same time, I can see kids not knowing about [name]Elijah[/name]'s Biblical ties, but I’m surprised that the woman didn’t know, either! Hmm…)

I think [name]Elijah[/name] was a great choice for your son, and I hope you can still enjoy his fantastic name!

Best wishes to you and [name]Elijah[/name]!

Oh, how annoying! [name]Elijah[/name] is a great name, and all boy! My son is [name]Dashiell[/name] and his name is so often mistaken as a girls’ name, especially when he was a little baby. It’s so annoying because it’s a boys’ name! I thought it was because his name is uncommon, but wow, [name]Elijah[/name]? I thought everyone knew that was a boys name! I’m sure as he gets older and looks more like a boy the mistakes will stop. I have no advice for you, but I feel your pain!

I have never heard of [name]Elijah[/name] on a girl, either. [name]Elijah[/name] sounds distinctly male to me, too. I suppose that some may think that names like [name]Elijah[/name], [name]Noah[/name] ([name]Noa[/name] is a legitimate female name, though), or [name]Ezra[/name] sound feminine just because of the ending. If people are open to -son names on girls, why not -a/-ah on boys? A lot of -a/-ah boys names even have history as boys names! I’d bet that most people associate [name]Madison[/name] and [name]Addison[/name] with girls. I don’t know why [name]Elijah[/name] would be mistaken for a girl, when it’s not even an uncommon boys name! Anyways, I think that [name]Elijah[/name] is a fabulous choice (for a boy). What is his middle name?

Thank you. I just got so irritated about it I had to post something. Erg. I guess it doesn’t help that he is oddly pretty for a boy but still. Oh and his middle name is [name]Michael[/name]. I usually only call him that when I’m telling him no, but before he was born we always called him [name]Elijah[/name] [name]Michael[/name].

To me, [name]Elijah[/name] is 100% male. It is a great name. If you get too frustrated, call him [name]Eli[/name]. [name]Eli[/name] sounds very masculine to everyone, I would think.
I love the biblical prophet [name]Elijah[/name]. But his follower was [name]Elisha[/name], and [name]Elisha[/name] sounds more feminine than [name]Elijah[/name]. I think [name]Elisha[/name] would be a great name for a girl.

Yeah I’ve heard of girl [name]Elisha[/name]'s before. [name]Frank[/name] Peretti has a series that include bg twin’s named [name]Elijah[/name] and [name]Elisha[/name]. The problem with calling him [name]Eli[/name] is that hubby truly hates that name. Some very bad association from his past. We have spent tons of time telling people they aren’t allowed to call him that so we are still working on a nn everyone likes.
