A She-Wolf?

We always intended to honour both our maternal grandfathers when naming our children,
as they played such a great part in our upbringing.

So, when our first son was born he was named
[name]William[/name] [name]Arthur[/name] after my husband’s grandfather.

Our potential second son would have been a
[name]Benjamin[/name] [name]Wolf[/name] after my grandfather.

Two girls later [name]Eleanor[/name] [name]Lillian[/name] and [name]Penelope[/name] [name]Eloise[/name] and we just found out that number 4 will be a girl as well, with no more children planned.

At first, I buried the idea of [name]Wolf[/name] and just picked some ‘pretty’ names,
but now I wonder.

There are girl names that mean ‘[name]Wolf[/name]’, like:

Orfilia (which supposedly is of [name]German[/name] origin, but seems to be more popular with Latin-Americans)
Ylva (Scandinavian for she-wolf)
Ylwen (which I cannot seem to find anywhere online, but apparently means wolf-girl??? Can anyone verify that?)

Too far out there, or a great idea?

I say just use [name]Wolf[/name]. If you want stick an e on the end of it to make it a bit more feminine: [name]Wolfe[/name] I posted a while back because I crushed on [name]Wolf[/name] for a girl after using it in a BNG. I think where it would not work as a first name, using it as a middle name to honour a loved family member would be A-Okay - at least in my book anyway. Other less brash ideas: Adalwolfa: Feminine form of [name]German[/name] Adalwolf, meaning “noble wolf.” [name]Adolpha[/name]: Feminine form of Latin [name]Adolphus[/name], meaning “noble wolf.” Agwang : African Luo name meaning “wolf.” Daciana : Romanian name derived from [name]Roman[/name] [name]Dacia[/name], the name for the region that is today Moldova and Romania. According to Strabo, the Dacians were originally known as the daoi, from Phrygian daos, meaning “wolf.” It is interesting to note, too, that daoi is the Gaelic word for a “wicked man.” [name]Guadalupe[/name] : From the name of a town in western Spain, from Arabic w”dī al-lubb, meaning “river of the wolf.” Lupa : Latin name meaning “she-wolf.” [name]Lupe[/name] : Short form of Spanish [name]Guadalupe[/name] (“river of the wolf”), meaning “wolf.” [name]Lupita[/name] : Diminutive form of Spanish [name]Lupe[/name] (“wolf”), meaning “little wolf.” Otsana : Basque name meaning “she-wolf.” Otsanda: Variant spelling of Basque Otsana, meaning “she-wolf.” Ralphina : Feminine form of English [name]Ralph[/name], meaning “wise wolf.” [name]Ulrica[/name] : Feminine form of Middle English [name]Ulric[/name], meaning “wolf power.” Compare with another form of [name]Ulrica[/name]. Ulva: Swedish form of Icelandic Úlfa, meaning “wolf.” Velvelva : Feminine form of Yiddish Velvel, meaning “wolf.” [name]Hope[/name] that’s helped a bit.

I like [name]Wolfe[/name] as an alternative option. I think most of the other options that mean wolf are “harder” sounding and not pretty anyway and by the time you move away from just [name]Wolf[/name] it might be a waste. [name]Lupita[/name] from the poster above is my exception to this. I love your other names and I hope you get to honour your grandfather.

I really like [name]Lupe[/name]. I have also heard a definition of [name]Tala[/name] that means wolf but [name]Tala[/name] is one of those girls’ names that’s used in a number of cultures, with unrelated meanings.

I think [name]Susi[/name] means wolf in Finnish, and is quite a nice name. Another option is a variant of adolpha, as mentioned above: Dolphina/Dolphine/Dolfina.

[name]Susi[/name] and [name]Lupita[/name] are really cute suggestions! I would do what the above posters suggested, [name]Wolfe[/name] works well for a girl. Are there no other names you can use from your grandfather? [name]Say[/name], his middle name? Out of the three that you suggested, Orfilia would be my favourite because it’s so close to [name]Ophelia[/name]. I would definitely include some way to honour your grandfather in the name! He clearly means a lot to you, and your daughter will think the name [name]Wolfe[/name] is super cool. If it still doesn’t float your boat, maybe a double middle name?

Thank you everyone,

My grandfathers middle name is [name]Dietrich[/name], so there would be a mouthful for a little girl. [name]German[/name] female [name]Wolf[/name] is ‘Woelfin’, but [name]Wolfe[/name] just sounds to me like [name]Wolf[/name] with an ‘e’ chucked at the end, Sorry.
I really like the idea of [name]Susi[/name], and Orfilia, although it sounds a tiny bit like orifice, which is unfortunate.
Hmm, lots to think about anyway.

Why not just name your babygirl [name]Wolf[/name]? I think it’s adorable and leaves you space to use a girly middle name or something as strong as the first name. [name]Wolf[/name] would be a brilliant name for a girl, but that’s just one’s opinion.

I like [name]Wolfe[/name] for a middle for your baby girl!

The word lupus was given to the disease because the rash that patients get resembles a wolf. I would shy away from any names like [name]Lupe[/name] for this reason. To me, it would be like naming a child cancer.

If I was you, I’d just use [name]Wolfe[/name] in the middle name slot (not as a first name!) and come up with a more feminine first name.

My thoughts: Rudolpha is a personal favorite of mine, meaning “famous wolf,” and [name]Channing[/name] has been popular lately for boys, but I’ve seen people want to use it for girls too. [name]Channing[/name] means “young wolf.”

[name]Phelan[/name] or Lupina, perhaps? I think [name]Wolf[/name] is great as a MN though

You could also feminize a name like [name]Colin[/name] (which means young pup - baby wolves are called pups) [name]Colina[/name] or something. -> Sorry not a brilliant idea but I’m trying to think outside the box here.
