A Sister for Clark

We are due with baby #2 next year; a girl. Thank goodness we have plenty of time to decide on a name because I am really struggling! Help, please?

Our son’s name is [name_m]Clark[/name_m] [name_m]Andrew[/name_m]. Here are a few we currently like:

[name_f]Diana[/name_f] (my husband’s current fav)
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] (my current fav)
[name_f]Molly[/name_f] ([name_f]Margaret[/name_f] nn?)
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f]
[name_u]Eloise[/name_u] or [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_f]Leona[/name_f] (my husband doesn’t love but I do)
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] (my husband doesn’t love but I do)
[name_u]Devon[/name_u] (our least favorite but we do like)

There’s a slight preference for a D first name because my husband, son and I are A, B, C names. Although I much prefer to love the name than stick to a D name. We would also like an M middle name to honor our mothers and grandmothers (unless we have an M first name- that would be enough). I’m currently liking [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] and [name_f]Maren[/name_f].

I’ve over thought it at this point and would really appreciate some outside input. [name_f]TIA[/name_f]!

I like all of your options!

Here are my thoughts …

[name_u]Devon[/name_u] … I actually enjoy the unexpectedness of this name. It is simple, without embellishment, and pairs wonderfully with [name_m]Clark[/name_m]. It’s quite striking. I think you should definitely warm up to this option!

[name_f]Diana[/name_f] … I think the name can stand beautifully on its own. If you don’t mind Superman / [name_m]Clark[/name_m] [name_m]Kent[/name_m] and Wonder Woman / [name_f]Diana[/name_f] [name_m]Prince[/name_m] comparisons, then I think this is a solid choice.

[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] … [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] is a steadfast choice that matches the strength of [name_m]Clark[/name_m] and is easily wearable.

[name_u]Eloise[/name_u] … [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] is such a sweet name, but, for me, it doesn’t have the power to hold its own when paired with [name_m]Clark[/name_m]. If you have a great middle name combination I think [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] could fair better. Still, the name is incredibly cute and delicate.

[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] … [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] always stands strong. It doesn’t excite me as much as your other options, but I think it could wear really well, especially if you are open to all of [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]'s nicknames. It’s a name that’s easy to love and becuase of this is feels very at home and comfortable.

[name_f]Leona[/name_f] … To me, [name_f]Leona[/name_f] feels very different from [name_m]Clark[/name_m]. It does hold its own, but I don’t find the name as interesting paired with [name_m]Clark[/name_m] or when compared to your other options.

[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] … [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is tradition, but it is not as interesting as your other choices. In addition, if you are really liking [name_f]Molly[/name_f] as a name, go with [name_f]Molly[/name_f] rather than the fuller name. However, I think [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] would make a beautiful middle name.

[name_f]Molly[/name_f] … [name_f]Molly[/name_f] feels very at home with [name_m]Clark[/name_m] and is so simple and sweet. The name feels more casual than a fuller name but it still feels like a name rather than just a nickname.

[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] … [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] is a great choice that has the spunk of [name_m]Clark[/name_m]. I think a great middle name could really make this name a beautiful fit.

[name_f]Veronica[/name_f] … [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] pairs beautifully with [name_m]Clark[/name_m] and has the same spunk and suave of [name_m]Clark[/name_m] while still having its own unique zeal. [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] can feel a bit more dated than [name_m]Clark[/name_m], but I think it can feel refreshing, especially with a great middle name.

Here is how I rank your names, with some middle name combination possibilities below each name.

I actually love all of your choices and could easily imagine using any of them. In terms of meeting your criteria and preferences, I find myself liking:

[name_f]Diana[/name_f] [name_f]Miriam[/name_f]
[name_f]Diana[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]

[name_f]Diana[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Maria[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] nn [name_f]Molly[/name_f]
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Diana[/name_f] nn [name_f]Molly[/name_f]

I really like [name_u]Devon[/name_u], maybe [name_u]Devon[/name_u] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] or [name_u]Devon[/name_u] [name_f]Mary[/name_f], and I think it works well with [name_m]Clark[/name_m] but with so many other great options, I can’t imagine you would choose one that is so far down on your list.

@mckinha thank you so much! This gives me a lot to think about and helps a lot. I appreciate you taking the time for such a detailed reply!

@erin-beth thank you so much for your thoughts and ideas!

I totally missed how you want to use a “M” middle name to honor your mothers and grandmothers! I love both [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] and [name_f]Maren[/name_f] and find [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] especially to be a name that pairs well with most names. I would say that either of these names should be your middle name pick if you don’t use [name_f]Molly[/name_f] or [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] as a first name.

Here are some other “M” middle name suggestions (with ** next to my favorites) if you want to sift through other options …

Is there anything else we can help you with? Are there any names that you are thinking about differently now and / or want more feedback on?

[name_f]Diana[/name_f] - I love [name_f]Diana[/name_f]! It’s a very classic and beautiful sounding name and I as a royal family fan have a soft spot for it!
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] - [name_u]Love[/name_u] its sweet sound and I only know kind Josephines! But I don’t like the nn [name_u]Josie[/name_u] as I consider it somewhat of a dog name.
[name_f]Molly[/name_f] - I absolutely hate! [name_f]Molly[/name_f] and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]! [name_f]Molly[/name_f] makes me think of a fat, middle aged woman (mollig in [name_m]German[/name_m] means chubby) and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is just a very old-fashioned name in a bad way.
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f] - not a fan of it as it’s also very old fashioned (think nn “[name_f]Vreni[/name_f]” :() but I think it’s ok when it’s pronounced the Russian way, which is “Veh-rah-NI-kah” but I don’t suppose you live in [name_f]Russia[/name_f].
[name_u]Eloise[/name_u] or [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] - I love [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] (although I prefer the original [name_m]French[/name_m] spelling Héloïse) but I’m not a fan of [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] because I think it’s currently over-used and because it has, I think, a masculine touch to it. I would prefer [name_f]Lenore[/name_f] or [name_f]Eleonora[/name_f].
[name_f]Leona[/name_f] - I don’t like it
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] - It’s nice
[name_u]Devon[/name_u] - 100% masculine for me.

Here are some D names that I personally love:

[name_f]Dahlia[/name_f]
[name_u]Dakota[/name_u]
[name_f]Delilah[/name_f]
[name_f]Dawn[/name_f]
Desislava or just simply [name_u]Desi[/name_u]
[name_u]Delaney[/name_u]

and here are some M names:

[name_f]Morwenna[/name_f]
Morella
Madita
[name_f]Merilyn[/name_f]
[name_f]Malina[/name_f]
Morana
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f]
[name_f]Marisol[/name_f]

[name_f]Diana[/name_f] is my favourite from your list and has the bonus of starting with a D. I like it paired best with [name_f]Miriam[/name_f].

I think [name_f]Diana[/name_f] is classic and pairs well with [name_m]Clark[/name_m].

Here are some suggestions for a middle name:

[name_f]Diana[/name_f] [name_u]Meredith[/name_u]
[name_f]Diana[/name_f] [name_f]Marielle[/name_f]
[name_f]Diana[/name_f] [name_f]Marcelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Diana[/name_f] [name_f]Magdalene[/name_f]
[name_f]Diana[/name_f] [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]

Other “D” first names to consider are:

[name_f]Delilah[/name_f]
[name_f]Deirdre[/name_f]
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
[name_f]Danielle[/name_f]
[name_f]Daniela[/name_f]
[name_u]Dara[/name_u]
[name_f]Dora[/name_f]
[name_f]Deborah[/name_f]
[name_f]Deanna[/name_f]
[name_f]Delia[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]
[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f]

I may be the only one here that doesn’t like [name_f]Diana[/name_f] and [name_m]Clark[/name_m] together.

There is the superhero link with Superman and wonder woman, which if you’re a marvel fan is perfect.

Also (I’m in the UK) [name_f]Diana[/name_f] [name_m]Clark[/name_m] was a main character on Downton [name_u]Abbey[/name_u], and that might be why I can’t see them together.

I love [name_u]Devon[/name_u] from your list!

[name_u]Devon[/name_u] and [name_m]Clark[/name_m] I can see together. Plus 2018 is all about girl names pushing the boundaries, especially where ambi-gender names are concerned. Makes me think [name_u]Devon[/name_u] [name_u]Windsor[/name_u]. Both [name_u]Devon[/name_u] and [name_m]Clark[/name_m] are very English names that I think suit perfectly.

If not [name_u]Devon[/name_u], what about [name_u]Dakota[/name_u]? [name_u]Dakota[/name_u] and [name_m]Clark[/name_m] share the K and follow suit alphabetically.

Not to push place names here, but if [name_u]Devon[/name_u] isn’t quite there, what about [name_u]Denver[/name_u]?

[name_u]Denver[/name_u] and [name_m]Clark[/name_m] go well. They are both surname names!

[name_u]Drew[/name_u], as in Barrymore. Was named from her grandmothers maiden name, which links to the surname [name_m]Clark[/name_m] but more so to his middle name which is a lovely connection.

[name_u]Devon[/name_u] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] & [name_m]Clark[/name_m] [name_m]Andrew[/name_m]

[name_u]Dakota[/name_u] [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] & [name_m]Clark[/name_m] [name_m]Andrew[/name_m]

[name_u]Denver[/name_u] [name_f]Margot[/name_f] & [name_m]Clark[/name_m] [name_m]Andrew[/name_m]

[name_u]Drew[/name_u] [name_f]Marilyn[/name_f] & [name_m]Clark[/name_m] [name_m]Andrew[/name_m]

Thank you for the M name suggestions!

I think at this point, we’ve taken all names off the list except [name_f]Diana[/name_f] and [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. Y’all did give me some perspective on the additional names that I hadn’t thought of but at the end of the day, these are the only two we completely agree upon. Of course, the list still exists and we might revisit some of those names later. And then there’s the fact that my husband slightly prefers [name_f]Diana[/name_f] while I slightly prefer [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. I tend to like names that lend themselves to a lot of nicknames and [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] has many!

[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t get me wrong, I enjoy the [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] movies. But I wouldn’t call myself a fan. However, I strangely don’t mind the reference. I think it gives them a subtle connection. Maybe not so subtle?

FWIW- we decided against [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] so [name_f]Molly[/name_f] would just be [name_f]Molly[/name_f]. And my husband much prefers [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] to [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] so I agreed we could take [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] off the list.

I love [name_f]Diana[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] and [name_f]Diana[/name_f] [name_u]Eloise[/name_u]! Some M names as a middle name choice could be: [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], Madita, [name_f]Mary[/name_f] or [name_f]Marilyn[/name_f].

If you like [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], but would like a “d” name, I think [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] would be a great fit.

[name_f]Daphne[/name_f] never grabbed me before but now it suddenly does! It’s quickly rising as one of my favorites.

My husband has decided I can pick the name myself but it’s not helping! My list is longer than ever.
