A Sister for Lucas

My husband and I apparently have very different taste when it comes to girl names! We had two names picked out for a second baby boy, but found out [name]Monday[/name] that It’s a Girl! We are thrilled, but she may not be if she has no name!

I like the vintage classics - [name]Adeline[/name], [name]Eleanor[/name], [name]Amelia[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Violet[/name], [name]Evelyn[/name]. My husband says the only pretty vintage name is [name]Lillian[/name] (and his cousin, due 3 months before me, is naming her LO [name]Lillian[/name] [name]Kay[/name]). My husband likes [name]Olivia[/name], [name]Madeline[/name] and [name]Abigail[/name] - the only 3 suggestions he has had. [name]Olivia[/name] and [name]Abigail[/name], as much as I like them, are way too popular in my opinion. And while [name]Madeline[/name] has always been one of my favorite names (I picked it for my own name in French class due to the lack of a french equivalent to [name]Sarah[/name]), [name]Maddy[/name] is far too popular nickname due to [name]Madison[/name].

Our 16 month old is [name]Lucas[/name] [name]Xavier[/name]. Our last name is one syllable beginning with B and ending with N. Oh, my husband also suggested [name]Leia[/name]… See what I am working with???

Suggestions are welcomed as I am fresh out of ideas!

Thanks in advance!

Vintage pretty, my favourite category.

[name]Vivienne[/name] seems like it could be a bit of a meeting ground between [name]Violet[/name] and [name]Lillian[/name].

[name]Ivy[/name] - not yet popular, fresh, simple without being boyish.

[name]Lydia[/name] - More vintage and less popular than [name]Olivia[/name], yet not outlandish and husband-frightening, lol.

[name]Viola[/name] - Softer than [name]Violet[/name], less common, but still floral and fresh.

[name]Miranda[/name], [name]Martha[/name], [name]Morwenna[/name], [name]Morgana[/name], and even [name]Meredith[/name] are all far less popular than [name]Madeline[/name] but in my eyes, at least, fairly appealing, feminine, and not overused. Far less likely to run into another on the playground than a [name]Maddy[/name] or [name]Mackenzie[/name].

I like [name]Abigail[/name], it’s an interesting Biblical name but find other ones less-used: [name]Susannah[/name], [name]Tabitha[/name], [name]Naomi[/name], and [name]Dinah[/name] all work for me.

Am I miles off your taste? Sorry. It’s five am here and I just can’t sleep.

What about [name]Lila[/name] or [name]Leah[/name] instead of [name]Lillian[/name] or [name]Leia[/name]?
You might also consider and discuss these with your hubby: [name]Adele[/name] or [name]Adella[/name], [name]Adelaide[/name], [name]Lydia[/name], [name]Lana[/name] or [name]Lena[/name], [name]Helena[/name], [name]Elena[/name] or [name]Marlena[/name], [name]Evalena[/name], [name]Evangeline[/name], [name]Athena[/name]?
I met a brother and sister named [name]Lucas[/name] and [name]Layla[/name].
Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions!! I do love [name]Vivienne[/name], but we have a couple in our circles but it certainly isn’t out of the question! [name]Adele[/name] and [name]Adelaide[/name] are on my list - my husband says he thinks about Gatorade when he hears [name]Adelaide[/name], and the Chief’s wife with Alzheimer’s on [name]Grey[/name]'s Anatomy when he hear [name]Adele[/name]. I love [name]Meredith[/name] but will probably get the same [name]Grey[/name]'s push back from him!

I love love love [name]Lila[/name], but do you think it is a little too similar to [name]Lillian[/name]'s likely nicknames [name]Lil[/name] and [name]Lily[/name]. Ahh, should have gotten the BFP first!!

I will slowly suggest some of the others and see where I get!!

Thanks again!

I know a [name]Lucas[/name] and [name]Olivia[/name] sibset, and a [name]Lucas[/name] and [name]Sophia[/name].
Perhaps [name]Livia[/name] if you don’t mind the alliteration? Maybe Levine?
Or instead of [name]Abigail[/name], [name]Gabriella[/name]? And you could still call her [name]Abby[/name] as a nn.

[name]Meredith[/name] has really grown on me recently and I don’t even watch [name]Grey[/name]'s. I guess he wouldn’t go for [name]Addison[/name] either? LOL
I did read, and now watch, Vampire Diaries though, and it is a character’s name. My [name]MIL[/name] is named Marilea, my hubby’s niece is Novalea…not sure how you feel about those names…
Speaking of Vampire Diaries, my fave name atm is [name]Elena[/name].
[name]Nora[/name] has been growing on me too. I love, love, love [name]Cora[/name] and [name]Vera[/name].
[name]Lila[/name] could be spelled [name]Lyla[/name] to make it different from [name]Lillian[/name], [name]Lily[/name] and [name]Lil[/name]. Personally, I think it is a tad similar, but it won’t sound like you are “copying” them.

Hahaha, he surprisingly suggested [name]Addison[/name]! Go figure. Update on the progress of the last few days. I started giving more consideration to [name]Madeline[/name] because I really do love the name. My husband suggested, and loves, [name]Madeline[/name] [name]Jane[/name]. In response to the popularity of [name]Maddie[/name], he said he was going to call her [name]Mads[/name] or MJ. It really is a sweet, beautiful name that I think is fitting for a child, as well as an adult in whatever profession she desires.

Now the debate is how to spell it! We both like the Mad-a-lin or Mad-a-len pronunciation rather than the Mad-a-line pronunciation. My husband thinks the best way to avoid pronunciation issues is to spell it [name]Madelyn[/name]. I do not like this spelling at all. And while I recognize that it was used prior to the last 10 years on a smaller scale, to me it looks like a fad name that someone replaced an :“i” with a “y” to be different. A pet peeve of mine.

I prefer the [name]Madeleine[/name] spelling. To me it is softer, and more sophisticated looking. I also think it encourages the softer -len ending. My husband thinks it looks like it would be pronounced -line and that nobody would be able to spell it. I agree that it would lend to more spelling confusion and correction, but honestly, in today’s world where people change random "i"s with "y"s, every name is a possible spelling issue.

Lastly, the most popular spelling, [name]Madeline[/name]. I like the spelling although I think it lends the most issue with the -lin vs. -line pronunciation. Technically speaking, it probably should be pronounced -line. My research seems to indicate that it is often more of a geographical preference but the -lin ending seems to end up more common.

Regardless of the spelling, I think there will always be a component of pronunciation and/or spelling issues, but really, that is just life with most names. [name]Even[/name] my simple name [name]Sarah[/name] sometimes causes confusion. [name]Case[/name] in point, my cell phone bill is to a “[name]Shara[/name]” because when I said [name]Sarah[/name] with an “h” that is how it was taken. Seriously.

Thoughts?

Why not spell it Madalen? Or Madelen? [name]Madalene[/name] even. It’s like [name]Magdalene[/name] with out the g.
