Hello! I just found out yesterday that we’re expecting #2!
It’s far too early to tell the gender yet, but we’ve already decided on [name_m]Jack[/name_m] for a boy. However, we are a bit lost on girl names!
Our first daughter is named [name_f]Mary[/name_f] with the middle name [name_f]Claire[/name_f].
Does anyone have any suggestions? [name_m]Saint[/name_m] names are a plus. We are due right around Halloween so part of me likes the idea of a subtle autumnal vibe.
We both really like:
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] (my main concern is that I don’t love the nickname Allie/Ally)
Claire/Clara (but this is off the table since it’s our first’s middle name)
We both sort of like:
[name_f]Ruth[/name_f]
[name_f]Chiara[/name_f] (I’m unsure if we should use it because it’s a form of [name_f]Claire[/name_f], though!)
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] (He would want the full name Lucille.)
He has vetoed:
[name_f]Ada[/name_f]
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]
[name_f]Diana[/name_f]
[name_f]Elaine[/name_f]
[name_f]Helena[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]
[name_f]Gwen[/name_f]
I have vetoed:
[name_f]Trinity[/name_f]
I have yet to propose [name_f]Vera[/name_f] and [name_f]Leona[/name_f] to him but I get the feeling he won’t be a fan.
Suggestions are more than welcome, as well as middle name ideas for [name_f]Alice[/name_f] if we choose to go that route!
[name_f]My[/name_f] favorites from your name bank are [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Lucille[/name_f].
[name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Vera[/name_f], [name_f]Leona[/name_f], [name_f]Chiara[/name_f], [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] are great!
Alice (Strong but sweet, classic but still fresh. None of the Alices I’ve met have been Allie - but it could grow on you, if she decided she liked it and wanted to use it?)
Lucy (Light but solid, literary and sweet)
Some middles with Alice:
Alice Bernadette
Alice Ebba
Alice Lucia
Alice Matilda
Alice Emilia
Alice Ruby
Alice Leonie
Alice Flora
Alice Dorothy
Alice Ingrid
Alice Verity
Alice Genevieve
Some more ideas as first names:
Mary and…
Julia
Tabitha
Florence
Imogen
Lucia
Edith
Cecilia
Anna
Adele
Susannah
Ebba
Elise
Felicity
Eloise
Congratulations!!
Mu forst though for an Autumnal girls name worh a vintage flair is: [name_f]Opal[/name_f] (birthstone of October)
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_f]Opal[/name_f] so sweet!
Some others:
Lucinda or Lucia (think it goes better with Mary and a possible future Jack, and gives the longer name for Lucy or Lulu etc)
Bridget (Saint name, goes so with with Mary, Birdie as nn option)
Frances (would be a winning combo with Mary and any future Jack, obv strong religious overtones AND gives the very cool Franny/Francy)
Claudia (Saint)
Eleanor
Felicity
Eve
Ingrid (“Indy”)
Elise
Eloise
Lydia
Rose
Teresa (Tessa/Tess with Mary would be adorable - and ages well)
Susanna (Susanna Ruth would be beautiful, Sunny is a lovely nn and with Ruth could use Suri)
Wouldn’t use Chiara - doesn’t seem in keeping with the style and heritage of Mary and Jack. I don’t mind Ruth but it’s still a little harsh for me (and I typically love harsh names). Ru and Ruthie are sweet though. Lucy suits but I agree that Mary and Lucy might be too similar being both Y ending two syllable names. Finally, I am not an Alice fan at all - don’t like saying the name (imo, it’s better on paper than in real life), and two of the three Alices I know are Ali’s. I much prefer Elise. I love Vera with Mary (and as a stand-alone). Not as keen on Leona, prefer Leonor/Helena/Helen (“Leni”).
Some Autumnal middle names: Hazel, Aurelia, Olive, Daphne, Bryony, Briar, Scarlett, Opal, Maple, Ruby, Willow - and I don’t think it’s on the nose just to use the pretty Autumn.
Some combos:
Lucia Maple
Lucinda Scarlett
Lucille Bryony
Bridget Willow
Elise Aurelia/Autumn
Eve Maple/Aurelia
Rose Daphne
Frances Daphne/Opal
Felicity Olive/Briar
Susanna Hazel (if not Ruth)
Ruth Hazel
Eleanor Ruby
Ingrid Maple
Claudia Hazel
Lydia Scarlett
Teresa Willow
Eloise Autumn
Vera Daphne/Scarlett/Willow
Leonor Willow
Helen Ruby /Opal
Helena Maple
M@ry is beautiful such a lovely timeless classic that’s so refreshing.
I immediately gravitated towards [name_f]Ruth[/name_f]! [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] is such a lovely name that feels stylistically similar to M@ry. [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] feels wholesome, strong, enduringly stubborn with the beautiful meaning ‘faithful companion’ which is a great meaning for someone who will be a little sister. Also you both love [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] which is a major plus.
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f] is beautiful! I think [name_f]Alice[/name_f] is perfect for her sister, and I don’t think [name_f]Allie[/name_f] is as intuitive of a nickname for [name_f]Alice[/name_f] as it used to be for [name_f]Allison[/name_f].
Don’t know if it makes you feel better, but I am a very nicknamey person and have never felt the need to call the Alices I have known [name_f]Allie[/name_f]. I really like [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] together. I like [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] (Lucy) with [name_f]Mary[/name_f]! I don’t really think anyone will notice the [name_f]Chiara[/name_f] - [name_f]Claire[/name_f] connection, but don’t use it if it will bother you.
ooh I actually know a [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_m]Jack[/name_m]!
I’ve never actually known anyone called [name_f]Alice[/name_f] to go by the name [name_f]Allie[/name_f] or [name_f]Ally[/name_f], and I’ve come across at least 10 people called [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in my time.
how about [name_f]Cara[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Clara[/name_f] or [name_f]Chiara[/name_f]?
with [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f], I think [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f] would work well. [name_f]Cara[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f] also!
Thank you guys SO MUCH for all the beautiful suggestions! I’m very relieved to hear that [name_f]Alice[/name_f] isn’t often nicknamed- I only know one or two Alices myself so I was unsure! It seems that [name_f]Allison[/name_f] is typically the one that gets turned into [name_f]Ally[/name_f].
I’m also loving [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Greta[/name_f], [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f], [name_f]Bridget[/name_f], and [name_f]Etta[/name_f]- will definitely be proposing these if baby winds up being a girl.
I like M@ry Cl@ire and [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. Both girls’ names have middle names that work well as double barrel names if you care to use hem that way. M@ry Cl@ire and [name_f]Katie[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. I also like that with the nickname [name_f]Kate[/name_f], all the names have four letters and the second letter is the vowel A. [name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_f]Kate[/name_f] and [name_m]Jack[/name_m].
[name_f]My[/name_f] second choice would be….
[name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] and [name_m]Jack[/name_m]
