I’m a few weeks from my due date and still having doubts about our second daughter’s name. Our top contender for several months now has been [name]Hazel[/name]. My husband thinks it’s perfect, but I keep waffling. Sometimes I love it, sometimes I’m unsure. It makes me feel guilty because I never once doubted [name]Ruby[/name]'s name. I feel like we have considered every name under the sun and keep coming back to [name]Hazel[/name], but I don’t know if that’s because it’s the one, or I just don’t like anything else better, you know?
Can you help? We like vintage names, a little on the spunky/sassy side, nothing too frilly. My husband loves almost anything with a nature connection (I think he’s still a little sad I don’t share his love for [name]Juniper[/name], [name]Coral[/name], and [name]Clover[/name]). I would prefer it to be out of the top 100 in the US, but that’s not a total deal breaker especially since I’m sure [name]Ruby[/name] will be there soon anyway.
Here are some of our previous top contenders that we vetoed for various reasons (I’m willing to revisit them if anyone can convince me!):
[name]Sadie[/name]- I have loved this name a very long time (since I saw Big Business as a kid!) and it was our 2nd choice for [name]Ruby[/name]. I love the sound of it. But I fear it is going to become very popular, it just seems to fit in with too many naming styles not to. I have seen people who otherwise have totally different taste than I do considering this name. It’s also, and I think this is the nail in the coffin for me, our neighbor’s dog’s name. I don’t mind that it is a popular dog name in general (3 of my top 4 are!), but having one right next door just kind of throws me for a loop.
[name]Daisy[/name]- the many, many comments I’ve read about it being perpetually juvenile finally got to me. I’m not interested in using a longer form such as [name]Margaret[/name]. I feel like I like the idea of this name (it just evokes spring, sunshine, and happiness for me) more than I love the sound of it.
[name]Lucy[/name]- I love the sound and the meaning. I am also totally in love with the idea of calling her [name]Lulu[/name]. But it is already quite popular and I know there are at least 2 in my neighborhood. The biggest problem is that it sounds too similar to [name]Ruby[/name]. I think I’d trip over my words trying to call their names.
To give a further idea of my style, other names we like but have crossed off the list are [name]Clementine[/name], [name]Ivy[/name], [name]Clara[/name], [name]Cora[/name], [name]June[/name], [name]Phoebe[/name]. I also love [name]Violet[/name]. It’s probably my favorite name other than Ruby, but it’s the name of my best friend’s daughter and very, very similar to [name]Ruby[/name]'s middle name (which is after my grandmother) so it’s not an option.
I really want to pick her name! As much as I’d love to be, I’m not really the “name her when you see her” type. Can you talk me into (or out of) any of these names? Any other suggestions? Thank you!
