Picking a girl’s name has been so much more difficult than my husband and I first anticipated. I feel like choosing a name for your child is one of the most important decisions you will make!
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] is by far the name that we love the most at the moment. I like that it’s short, feminine, sweet and can’t possibly be misspelled. We have a surname that is very hard to spell, so we wanted to keep her first name as simple as possible.
I think we’ve resigned ourselves to the fact that [name_f]Ava[/name_f] will possibly be a common name amongst other girls her age, but I guess it’s popular for a reason?! There definitely aren’t any [name_f]Ava[/name_f]'s amongst our family, friends, work colleagues or acquaintances, so that reassures me.
We also love the “old-lady” feel that [name_f]Ava[/name_f] has, without being too crazy and out there. We have already picked a boy’s name for possible future use, [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]. We both [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] this name, and I think [name_f]Ava[/name_f] works well with the “old-man” style that [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] brings. If we had a second girl, I think [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] would be our choice and would also suit [name_f]Ava[/name_f] nicely.
However, in the spirit of trying to be a little bit different, I guess my next question is what middle name would be a quirky option, that would give her name more of a twist??? Our first thought was to go with [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. Beautiful, but I know how common this combination is.
So, to all you helpful people out there, any suggestions for a middle name? In keeping with my current tastes and in a bid to give her name consistency, I’d love it to be a bit “old lady chic”. I don’t mind if it has one, two or three syllables - all will work with our surname. Thanks a bunch
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] is lovely! I also love [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]
Spunky/old lady chic:
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Clementine[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]/[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] (too many ‘v’ sounds?)
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Helena[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Juliette[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
Best of luck! [name_f]Hope[/name_f] you like some of these.
With [name_f]Ava[/name_f] I like the idea of something unexpected in the middle. My first thought was [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], but I see [name_u]Jem[/name_u] already suggested it so I second [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Clementine[/name_f]! Other ideas
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] Glorianna
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Mercy[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Verity[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Fidelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_u]Wren[/name_u]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]
So, these are a combination of names that I think fit your broad stipulation of “spunky.” I personally find all these names spunky, but others may disagree, so whatever. But I chose a rang of names considering that you like “old-lady” names, that you like simple names because of your last name, and because there is something at least a little “out there” about them. So some may fit the bill for some of that criteria, others other criteria I also tried to keep in mind finding names that don’t end in ‘a’, but alas that’s hard. Good thing [name_f]Ava[/name_f] sounds good with almost anything!
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Maxine[/name_f] [then she could be [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_u]Max[/name_u]! :)]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Zuly[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_u]Roux[/name_u]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Iola[/name_f]/[name_f]Iona[/name_f]/[name_f]Ione[/name_f] [more old lady, like you like, but a little less common and more spunky imo]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Maia[/name_f]/[name_f]Maya[/name_f]/[name_f]Mya[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_u]Ray[/name_u]/[name_u]Rae[/name_u]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Theophaneia[/name_f] [I found this on nb the other day, it’s my “very out there” suggestion, haha!]
But I also have another suggestion. If you’re looking to transform her name from [name_f]Ava[/name_f] Plain and Tall to [name_f]Ava[/name_f] Spunky Spunk with the use of middle names, some may find it too gratuitous to even consider it, but have you considered using two names?
I love [name_f]Ava[/name_f] for all the reasons you listed and agree that you shouldn’t let popularity alone dissuade you. It is perfect with [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] and I love [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]/[name_f]Elsie[/name_f] too.
Thanks everyone! These are all such wonderful ideas for middle names, great suggestions.
The only problem with a lot of them is that my husband doesn’t like them, too. For example, I LOVED [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Florence[/name_f], but he thought it was too “nanna”. So, Hubby and I have come up with a list together; some from your suggestions and others we’ve found on different baby name websites. What is your favorite out of the following list?
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Leonie[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] (this one is kind of cute because violet is the flower of February, when she’s due)
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Belle[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Adele[/name_f]
FYI, our last name begins with an ‘M’ and has two syllables.
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_u]Rue[/name_u], [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]…and love the above suggestion of [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]!
From your list, my favorites are [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] and [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]! The idea of having her “birth flower” in her name is very sweet. [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Belle[/name_f] could also be really cute; both names are short enough that you could even call her by her first and middle, which could be helpful in distinguishing her from other Avas if that becomes an issue.
I think [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] and [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]–though adorable-- aren’t the best fit because they’re both heavy on the long a sound like [name_f]Ava[/name_f].
