I’m really intent on starting our shortlist for a girl again from scratch. I love all of the names husband and I have thought of so far, but am having a hard time feeling like either of them are “the one”. We love vintage names (as well as literary, botannical and heard-of but uncommon names) and and really don’t mind dusty or clunky. I know I’ve said this about a million times, but I’m a huge fan of the names [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] gave her little animal characters and draw inspiration from them, like I did for our son’s name and for our daugther’s middle name.
We have decided on the middle name [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f] if this baby is a girl. [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f] probably never was a common name, but it runs in my family tree and I would love to use it, but just for a girl. I just don’t really see the sparkle in [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] for a boy… Until now we had narrowed our list down to [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f], [name_f]Gloria[/name_f], [name_f]Celeste[/name_f], [name_f]Martha[/name_f], [name_f]Adele[/name_f] and [name_f]Julia[/name_f]. Other names we love: [name_f]Helen[/name_f] or [name_f]Helena[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] (can’t use), [name_f]Marjorie[/name_f], [name_f]Irene[/name_f] and [name_f]Teresa[/name_f] (also can’t use).
I was wondering if you wonderful berries could help us with suggestions of names you think sound nice with [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f] as a middle name.
Are you interested in 2- or 3-name combos? I noticed that many of the combos in your signature consist of 3 names, so I will include some of both in my suggestions:
I love I lot of the names you’ve already considered! Especially [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f], [name_f]Gloria[/name_f], [name_f]Martha[/name_f], [name_f]Adele[/name_f], [name_f]Julia[/name_f], and [name_f]Irene[/name_f]. And your children’s names are neat. I especially have a soft spot for [name_m]Peter[/name_m] ([name_m]Peter[/name_m] Rabbit, [name_m]Pete[/name_m]'s Dragon-it’s definitely very storybook)
First name I thought of when I saw “storybook” was [name_f]Alice[/name_f], as in Wonderland. Because I love the Wonderland books (I’m going through a phase right now). I think [name_f]Alice[/name_f] is a really neat name that is both adventurous and serious, and would serve her well in adulthood.
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] made me think of [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f], which is really pretty. I also thought of [name_m]Roald[/name_m] Dahl’s [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], although I’m not sure how that would age and I think that it’s too tied to one character…although that may change as the name gets more popular.
My favorite, favorite series growing up was “Redwall” by [name_m]Brian[/name_m] [name_m]Jacques[/name_m]. In short, it’s a population of mice, squirrels, hedgehogs, otters, and the like living in an [name_u]Abbey[/name_u]…and defending it against villainous rats and weasels, etc. It’s kind of like a [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] epic. There are many books with a variety of names, but I remember there being a [name_f]Constance[/name_f], a [name_f]Mara[/name_f], [name_u]Jess[/name_u], Triss, and [name_f]Mariel[/name_f] (I named a pet mouse [name_f]Mariel[/name_f]). My favorite character was a hare named [name_m]Basil[/name_m] Stag, and I remember him telling another character that had he been born a girl hare, his mother would have named him [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]
[name_u]Dorian[/name_u] [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f] seems like a nice name. But honestly I like [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f] best as a first name and suggest [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f] [name_f]Polly[/name_f] to you.
Would you consider varying [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f] to [name_f]Thomasin[/name_f]? It’s an even older form of the name, is rare and beautiful, and would give you a bit more wiggle-room to use a longer or -a ending first name.
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] (or [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] for that matter) cannot be used, because it already belongs to our angel baby.
I think that overall, the flower names are growing on me. My kids have very nature-y and whimsical middle names, but this baby wont. [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f] is beautiful, but doesn’t fit with [name_m]Peter[/name_m] and [name_f]Sabina[/name_f]'s middle names. I’m kind of split up between nature names and more vintage names.
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] and [name_f]Lavender[/name_f] have been growing on me, but I’m concerned that a girl named [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] or [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] wont be taken too seriously. Also, [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] shares an initial with my son’s name and I kind of wish to avoid that. I love [name_f]Lavender[/name_f], but feel it’s a mouthful with [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f] and our last name.
[name_f]Peony[/name_f] [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f] has the sweetness of [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] combined with the whimsical sophistication of [name_f]Cecily[/name_f]! [name_u]Love[/name_u] it!
I absolutely love where you grab your inspiration from. I love a good storybook inspired name! [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f] is fabulous. I just adore it. Here are some suggestions…
From some of the names you already love, I really like [name_f]Julia[/name_f] [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f], [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f], [name_f]Celeste[/name_f] [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f], and [name_f]Helen[/name_f] [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f].
