twinkle,
I don’t have any personal experience with homeschooling, and more than likely my kids will be going to public school, but from the sound of it, [name]Rosie[/name] might really benefit from having you for a teacher. You sound plenty qualified! And she could always transition to a public school later if you decided that would be good too.
I do have many friends that home school, and it seems to work out well for them!
[name]Kate[/name] I have TWO co-workers with the initials KKK and one of them actually uses his middle initial on everything! for example: [name]Kevin[/name] K. Kraft (not his actual name) but WHYYYYYY would you use your middle initial when its not necessary?!
I love the name [name]Lucia[/name]… great choice!![/quote]
THANKS! We are very happy with it and get a lot of compliments (after, of course they ask how we pronounce it… but thats okay, we expect that). My mom isnt in love with it, which is part of the reason we didnt tell anyone until we had her! its growing on her though, every time one of her friends gushes over it she likes it more and more
Hello everyone! I’m [name]Lily[/name] and I’m 13 years old. I know, I know, so young! I’m fairly new to this site, although I fear I am already quite addicted. I’ve been a name nerd for years. Luckily, many of my friends are as well, so it works out just lovely. I of course have no children, but I do have two cats.
[name]Simon[/name]-After my favorite book character at the time.
[name]Sissy[/name]-Because she’s my “sister”. Yeah, I know. Creative.
I used to have a cat named [name]Craig[/name], but he died. He has a cool naming story, though. I was 5 when we got him and had a lot of trouble finding boy names I liked (I still do). My grandpa started listing names and eventually he got to [name]Craig[/name]. I said “Hey! There’s a kid named [name]Craig[/name] in my class!” I’m not sure why I got hooked on the name, since the [name]Craig[/name] in my class is autistic and I was frankly a little scared of him at that age. Regardless, we names him [name]Craig[/name]. Years later, [name]Craig[/name]'s therapist suggested he get a kitten so he could learn to be gentler. He named her [name]Lily[/name], after me. I was so proud.
twinkle- We moved around a lot in my early childhood due to my father’s job. My mother homeschooled me from pre-school through second grade which I absolutely enjoyed. Their reason for it was that they didn’t want me to move schools mid-year (since we did move during the school year a few times) or have to go through making and then loosing friends over and over again. I really loved being homeschooled and honestly don’t think I missed out at all. When I was eight we settled in New [name]York[/name] and my sister and I started “real” school. The transition was strange for the first few weeks but we both adapted very quickly. I think if you feel you are ready to take on homeschooling and that you believe it’s best for you child then you should go for it! It’s a wonderful thing, especially since you are trained as a teacher.
[name]Hi[/name], Twinkle,
We had a lot of problems with our daughter [name]Laura[/name]'s school situation when she was little. First we had her at a conventional preschool. She got into trouble a lot there. Then we put her into junior kindergarten at a Lutheran school. Her brother was in the 5th grade at that school, and he was a shining star. [name]Laura[/name] misbehaved a lot. She was in the principal’s office on a regular basis. One time she cut her uniform with the scissors. Fortunately her teacher was very patient. But she had a lot of trouble in the after school daycare.
I finally decided to move her to a Montessori school. She responded really, really well to the Montessori style of learning. But the school was Fundamentalist [name]Christian[/name] (I didn’t realize that when I enrolled her) and the people in charge were very, very strange. They had chapel time that was dysfunctional. One time one of the school owners was teaching chapel. He taught the story of [name]Rachel[/name] and [name]Leah[/name] which is in [name]Genesis[/name]. In the story [name]Rachel[/name] is the beautiful sister and [name]Leah[/name] is the sister who has ugly eyes. The teacher had his own daughter stand up and represent [name]Rachel[/name]. Then he chose a girl to be [name]Leah[/name]. It was really disturbing. He did some other really awful things that I don’t want to put on Nameberry.
So [name]Laura[/name] went to the Montessori School from K thru 2nd grade. Then I moved her to a very academic private school that was focused on thinking of their students as individuals. That school worked out well although it was difficult both socially and academically for a couple of years. [name]Laura[/name] graduated from the 6th grade and then we moved to [name]Colorado[/name]. Her school in CO - [name]Cheyenne[/name] Mountain [name]Junior[/name] High - was incredible. Then we moved back here and she went to a great public high school for four years.
I would suggest that you take your daughter to someone who can counsel you about what steps to take to get her a great education that fits her. The person needs to observe her in person.
One thing that worked really well for my kids was homeopathy. I know that homeopathy is very popular in [name]England[/name]. But now both kids have stopped taking their homeopathic remedies and they are kind of snappy and surly. I’m still on my remedy though.
Am I too late to play? Such fun reading about everyone. I am [name]Katie[/name], 34, and I have 2 daughters - [name]Kaya[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] age 10 and [name]Lucia[/name] [name]Carmen[/name] age 3 (in 2 weeks). I am technically [name]Katharine[/name], but I have tried twice unsuccessfully to switch to my full name, but I wasn’t very good at responding when called!
[name]Kelly[/name] (erinpurple) - I also have a labradoodle “baby” named Satchmo - they’re the greatest!
We are currently trying for baby #3 and already thinking of names since I have been a name nerd my whole life! So happy to have found nameberry though, as I find myself cringing on so many of the other naming sites, and you all are inspirational! Anyway, DH and I don’t agree on names at all so it’s a long, tough road ahead!
My name’s [name]Laura[/name] and I’m 33. I’m a SAHM of 4 and plan on having more children. I met my hubby in college and taught middle school for a few years after graduation before we got married. I wasn’t a true name nerd until the last year or so when I started trying to figure out what we’d name a 5th child (who I would love to conceive whenever God’s willing). Picking the first 3 names was easy (P@ul St3ph3n, Cl@r3 Mich3ll3, and M@rk Jos3ph) but I had a really hard time coming up with our last daughters name (K@th@rine Ros3) and I still don’t feel like it’s quite the right name. I went with it b/c I love the name [name]Kate[/name] but wanted to use the full name [name]Katharine[/name] as it’s a family name and a saints name. But I don’t really love the full name.
When you say you work in research what type of research do you mean? Is it medical/science research? That is if you dont mind sharing. I ask because I’m planning on persuing a career in medical research. Three days a week sounds like a perfect job![/quote]
I work in clinical research. Mainly vaccines and pain medications. We don’t research the diseases, but treatments for them. I do Phase 1 to Phase 3 trials. Basically it is the pharmaceutical research done on consenting human subjects. It is a great job and is pretty flexible with hours and such.[/quote]
That sounds like a great job! At this point I’m thinking about going into microbiology or immunology, as I’d like to study the disease side of things, but vaccing development has always interested me. If you dont mind me being extra nosey, may ask if or what you have a degree in?[/quote]
I have a bachelors of science in biology and a masters of science in public health and education.
I know excatly what you mean about cringing on other sites! I don’t mean to sound snobby but other sites I’ve been on I find myself cringing at their suggestions and comments. When I hear them tell people that Jayyden is gorgeous and [name]Lilie[/name]-mae is creative but am begged not to use [name]Dorothea[/name] or [name]Cordelia[/name] as it would be cruel to the child…I know I’m not with like minded people!
Frankly I think the sophisticated opinions on Nameberry have spoiled me!
Best dog ever! We actually flew our dog to us from Oklahoma… I did 6 months of research before buying her (shes 4 now) and found a breeder in Oklahoma who has field trial champ hunting labs and poodles that love to swim and retrieve… so [name]Sammy[/name] is actually my husband’s hunting dog (retriever)! She does so well with [name]Lucia[/name] as well. She is very gentle and very well trained. Its like having a child around the house, I swear when we talk she knows what we’re telling her!
My name is [name]April[/name], and I will be 29 later this month. Currently my husband and I (who have been together 4.5 years) have a 22 month old daughter named [name]Madelaine[/name] [name]Amelia[/name]. We have recently begun TTC #2 and if that one is a boy we will be done (that’s the plan anyway). [name]Madelaine[/name] was a very happy accident, so we’re not sure how the planning thing will work out.
Right now I am going to college full-time (for the second time, no longer interested in my first degree) and working part time.
[name]Hi[/name] there, my name is [name]Becky[/name], I’m 28 years old and I’ve been a long time lurker on this blog. It’s great to finally “meet” everyone and introduce myself. My DH, [name]Ethan[/name], and I grew up in the same neighborhood and got married after our [name]Junior[/name] year in college. We have two sons, [name]Judah[/name] [name]Elias[/name] and [name]Levi[/name] [name]Samuel[/name] who I love staying at home with. I have a BA in English Lit but I’ve never worked FT. I do some part time editing for a publishing company which is a nice side job to have, plus I’m a writer so I do that when I have the time. I love names and having grown up in a big family (I’m the fifth of six, plus I have many cousins) I’ve been around baby-naming my whole life.
We are also expecting our third child, a girl, in [name]May[/name] and coming up with a name for her has been harder than we thought. We knew we needed an OT name that went with [name]Judah[/name] and [name]Levi[/name] but wasn’t too common or too out there. We’re pretty sure we’re going with [name]Ruth[/name] at the moment, though mn has yet to be decided. We had originally loved Tzipporah but decided against it because of pronunciation/spelling issues.
Anyway, it’s been great getting to “meet” everyone here. Another great thing about this thread: I’ve discovered I “know” other people here from another blog I regularly post on. [name]How[/name] funny!

She sounds divine! I found out about them because I was looking for a non-shedder to appease my husband but I was set on having another lab because they are so fantastic with kids. Mine is awesome with my [name]Lucia[/name] too - she tugs and pulls on him all the live-long day and he just takes it. When he’s had too much he just goes to find a hiding spot for awhile, such a sweetie.

LOL - me too! I judge the success of my names when they all get voted thumbs down in polls … means I must be on the right track. teeheehee
I adore [name]Ruth[/name]! A great choice, [name]Becky[/name], with a nice, simple sound and a fantastic OT connotation. Might I ask what blog you are referring to?
Freckles and [name]Susan[/name], thank you so much for sharing your stories with me!
Freckles, I am glad that you didn’t feel like you missed out, and adjusted well; that has reassured me a lot! Especially as you went into conventional schooling at around the same age [name]Rosie[/name] probably would.
[name]Susan[/name], that man sounds so … bizarre, really. And not very nice at all! But I do know a bit about Montessori education - my sister’s eldest children go to a Montessori nursery (up to age 6) here. The one that they attend is secular, and she and they seem very pleased with it. If we end up staying in [name]London[/name], I definitely hope to send [name]Jasper[/name] and [name]Raffy[/name] there. I am glad that [name]Laura[/name] had more luck in her schooling after that!
You are right - I will bring up the topic with [name]Rosie[/name]'s social worker, who we are still in touch with. She has known [name]Rosie[/name] since she was two. And thank you for the advice - I will look into homeopathic remedies. I only know a little about them, and while I can’t say I believe in the theory (although that may change as I learn more about them) they do seem to have a very beneficial placebo effect, which could well help with [name]Rosie[/name]'s anxiety.
