Although I am only part Scottish (1/4), and have never lived there, I feel both English and very Scottish, and I’d love to honour that heritage in my children’s names (not expecting, just thinking).
Of course, there is a wealth of lovely Scottish names I could choose from, but I was wondering what names remind you Berries of [name]Scotland[/name]? Think the camera panning across some heather-clad moorland and then some lush green mountains, while the bagpipe tunes of [name]Loch[/name] Lomond play in the background - what name brings all that to mind, for you personally?
I’ve been to [name]Scotland[/name], and I love it, which is part of the reason we chose [name]Kyle[/name] for our son, now 12. [name]Kyle[/name] of Lochalsh is a town near [name]Skye[/name] on the northwest coast.
auburn how wonderful that you love your heritage. I love Scottish names too.
If you remember when my daughter was naming her baby she loved the name [name]Bluebell[/name] which is the national flower of [name]Scotland[/name].
Here are ones that I love
[name]Alexander[/name]
[name]Alister[/name]
[name]Lachlan[/name]
[name]Grant[/name]
[name]James[/name]
[name]Stuart[/name]
[name]Dougal[/name] but only as a guillty pleasure
like not love
[name]Heath[/name] but not [name]Heather[/name] (sorry to the Heathers)
[name]Hugh[/name]
ones that I love for the girls
[name]Skye[/name]
[name]Anne[/name]
[name]Greer[/name]
[name]Lara[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] or [name]Rosalind[/name]
[name]Bonnie[/name]
I hear you, I’m technically only slight more than 1/4 Scottish, but it is the heritage I grew up with
I find, unfortunately, a lot of Scottish names, or names I associate with being Scottish, are just so common and used by everyone that many have lost their charm ([name]Mary[/name], [name]Margaret[/name]) … or they are hard to pronounce. BUT, here are a few that I feel are still distinctly Scottish but spelled in a way that are pronounceable.
[name]Alistair[/name]
[name]Angus[/name]
[name]Shamus[/name] (although I am not a fan personally)
Murdoch
[name]Duncan[/name]
[name]Bryce[/name]
I find it’s a little harder for girl’s names
[name]Ainsley[/name]
[name]Iona[/name]
[name]Rhona[/name]
[name]Bridget[/name]
[name]Don[/name]'t forget [name]Malcolm[/name], [name]Giles[/name] (after St. [name]Giles[/name]) and [name]Andrew[/name] (the patron saint of [name]Scotland[/name]).
Im american but married to a scottish guy and live in scotland…and we have 2 lovely little boys…[name]Alexander[/name], but we call him [name]Alec[/name] (an old time scottish nickname…)…and [name]Arran[/name], named after the Scottish island…good luck finding your perfect scottish name!
(by the way, even though [name]Flora[/name] [name]Macdonald[/name] is kind of a hero over here, and defended scottish freedom, Id avoid naming a baby for her…she became a huge plantation/slave owner in the US when she left scotland! So much for freedom!)
I don’t have any new suggestions for you (except for maybe [name]Lachlan[/name]), but thank you for bringing this up! I’m also Scottish and very proud of my heritage also.
While travelling in [name]England[/name] years ago, I took the train to Edinburgh and just fell in love with that city. When I think of [name]Scotland[/name], these names pop into my head. Boys

@kyemsma - there are some really good Scottish place names. I love [name]Ailsa[/name] ([name]Craig[/name]), personally.
@[name]Rollo[/name] - I do remember, and I think [name]Bluebell[/name] would be such a lovely, unusual middle name. I wish [name]Heather[/name] was as unusual - I think I’d love it if it weren’t so darn popular! I adore [name]Alexander[/name], [name]Alister[/name], [name]Rose[/name] and [name]Bonnie[/name]. According to my Scottish relatives, they think ‘bonnie’ as a name is bizarre, but I still love it
@tarat3232 - [name]Elspeth[/name] is a favourite of mine, although I think I slightly prefer [name]Elsa[/name].
@zaidagal - I did not know that about [name]Flora[/name] [name]Macdonald[/name]; thank you for telling me! And I think you’ve chosen very handsome names, [name]Alexander[/name] “[name]Alec[/name]” and [name]Arran[/name] make great brothers.
@mischa - So many great names! I love the idea of [name]Baird[/name], although not so much the actual sound. As mentioned, I like [name]Alistair[/name] and adore [name]Ailsa[/name] and [name]Elspeth[/name], plus [name]Eilidh[/name] (but [name]Ellie[/name] is so popular here!), [name]Isabel[/name] (I prefer the non-Scottish spelling and it’s so popular, but still lovely) and [name]Lorna[/name]. [name]Morag[/name] is a guilty pleasure of mine! [name]Morag[/name] nn [name]Maggie[/name] could be sweet.
Thank you all so much, it was really interesting to read about what feels Scottish to other people
