A way to honour Eunice?

I’m looking for a way to honour Eunice.

My grandmother hated her name and would turn in her grave if I gave it to a daughter but I’d still love to use it somehow. I think it’s clunky-cute but I would want my child to have a unique name and not pass it down directly.

I’ve thought of Euna and variants but I don’t love any of them.

I’m up for anything, odd meaning connections (though I’m not a fan of biblical names), similar sounds or E starting names with “ice” ending middles. As long as it feels obvious enough to honour.

Her middle name was Barbara if you want to play around with that too

Thanks berries!

Nic- names come to mind right away! Eunice comes from Eu + Nike (good + victory) so any Nic- adjacent name would work, both with the sound, origin, and meaning! Nicola, Nicolette, Nikita, Annika and Danica come to mind, but I’m sure there’s more. Another one I’m surprised hasn’t been suggested is Nia!

You could use the “nice” sound to get to Anniston or Alanis. Florence is another idea that kind of rhymes! Not exactly, but it has that distinctive n-and-ce ending.

Also from the meaning of “good” something like Kali or Tova could be a nice, very subtle link.

From Barbara you get a lot of choices, from names ending in -ara (Elara, Annora, Lara, Samara, etc.) to names like Arabella, Araceli, etc.

I’ve included obscure and culturally diverse names. Obviously wearability and appropriation may be an issue, but I wanted to list a lot as these names may be stepping stones in finding one you love and can use (and of course idk what your cultural ties are or your any partner/future partner’s):

Other names meaning victory:

[name_f]Victoria[/name_f]
[name_f]Berenice[/name_f]
[name_f]Jaya[/name_f]
[name_u]Nike[/name_u] (Nicole, Nicky?)
[name_f]Signy[/name_f] (accent on the y which my keyboard can’t do!)
Ateri
Cisa
Elpinike
[name_f]Kaloni[/name_f] (a user submitted meaning on BTN is ‘‘beauty’s victory’’ of Greek origin?? Not well verified, though)
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f]
Sigbritt
Theonike
Zelinde (3 syllables)

Related to the theme of victory:
[name_f]Joy[/name_f]
[name_f]Hope[/name_f]
[name_u]Jubilee[/name_u] (also contains Eunice’s two E’s)

Clunky and battle-related: Thusnelda (possibly meaning a thousand battles - again, not well verified) which I totally love …ditto just [name_f]Nelda[/name_f]!

Keeping some of Eunice’s sounds:
[name_f]Nina[/name_f], [name_f]Nia[/name_f], [name_f]Nisa[/name_f], [name_f]Nita[/name_f], [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f], [name_f]Denice[/name_f], [name_f]Therese[/name_f], [name_f]Euphemia[/name_f], Euphrasia, [name_f]Anu[/name_f], [name_f]Anouk[/name_f], Beatrui (also B for [name_f]Barbara[/name_f] of course! Ditto [name_f]Beatriz[/name_f], [name_f]Bijou[/name_f], [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f], Bonita), [name_u]Enu[/name_u], [name_f]Indu[/name_f] (I think this is beautiful!) [name_f]Judith[/name_f], [name_u]Jude[/name_u], Kiku, [name_f]Lilou[/name_f], [name_f]Lulu[/name_f], [name_f]Luella[/name_f] (very stretchy this one but I do love [name_f]Luella[/name_f] so in she snuck!), [name_m]Manju[/name_m], Manjula, [name_f]Milou[/name_f], Minu, [name_m]Yu[/name_m], [name_f]Yuni[/name_f], [name_f]Turi[/name_f].

[name_f]Evette[/name_f]
[name_f]Evike[/name_f]
[name_f]Evonne[/name_f]

[name_u]Laurel[/name_u] names, laurel being a symbol of victory: [name_f]Laura[/name_f], [name_f]Loretta[/name_f], [name_u]Laurel[/name_u], [name_u]Lauren[/name_u], [name_f]Lorelai[/name_f] (homophone of unrelated origin), [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], [name_f]Kelila[/name_f], [name_f]Lorinda[/name_f].

Three more (then I’ll stop!): [name_f]Marceline[/name_f] (contains e, n, i and c from [name_f]Eunice[/name_f] and has a tenuous link to the meaning, via good victory’s association with battles as it means “little warrior”).
[name_u]Ennis[/name_u] and [name_f]Ilanys[/name_f], both meaning “from the island” and sounding a lot like [name_f]Eunice[/name_f] :heartpulse:

Having a quick scan of previous comments the only other name/nickname I can’t see mentioned is [name_f]Niecy[/name_f].

[name_f]Beulah[/name_f] would be a super cool honor of both names! “B” beginning and “a” sound ending for [name_f]Barbara[/name_f], and “eu” for [name_f]Eunice[/name_f]. Sooo beautiful, and absolutely unique.:heart:

[name_f]My[/name_f] grandmother also hated her name and ALWAYS went by a nickname. Did [name_f]Eunice[/name_f]? Did she have a cool maiden name? [name_u]Or[/name_u] can you use her mother’s name?

Wow everyone, thank you for such thought filled responses. I can’t believe how many connections one name can have.

@EdgeOfTheMeadow you are a real name detective! Thank you so much, lots to think about here!
We are from the UK and live in Australia. You’re Thusnelda reminded me of [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] with a similar meaning but I’m a bit upset it’s so popular here because it’s a bit more um… wearable, than the lovely Thusnelda. :joy:

@Casea33 seems to be a trend among the women of my family to not like their given name. She went by [name_f]Barb[/name_f] / [name_f]Barbara[/name_f] and her mothers and maiden name have already been mentioned here in some lists so I’m looking at those with fresh eyes!

Thank you everyone for your help!

I feel that [name_f]Bernice[/name_f] would be the ideal name. It has the “ice” of [name_f]Eunice[/name_f] and the “B” of [name_f]Barbara[/name_f]

I love the sentiment behind the name ! Maybe

[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] ( ends in [name_u]Ice[/name_u] like [name_f]Eunice[/name_f] , starts with a B for [name_f]Barbara[/name_f] )
[name_f]Bernice[/name_f]
[name_f]Candace[/name_f]
[name_f]Clarice[/name_f]
[name_u]Felice[/name_u]
[name_f]Ines[/name_f] / Enez

[name_f]Enid[/name_f]
[name_f]Una[/name_f]

I would jump at the chance to use Eudora, how special. Also throwing in Nessa.

Edit: and Nysa/Nyssa

I’m gonna focus on Barbara/Barb as that is what you said she went by.

[name_f]Babette[/name_f]
[name_u]Arbor[/name_u]
[name_f]Berit[/name_f]
[name_f]Birdie[/name_f]
[name_f]Brigid[/name_f]
Vara/Varya/Vera
[name_f]Bardot[/name_f]
[name_f]Beryl[/name_f]
[name_u]Bryn[/name_u]

[name_f]Eunice[/name_f] Barbara…Barbie or [name_u]Bobbie[/name_u]. Eubara. I think you should go with [name_f]Barbara[/name_f] [name_f]Eunice[/name_f] as the child’s legal name and Bennie/Beni/Beanie as the cutesy quirky nickname.

[name_f]Annice[/name_f] (pronounced “ANN-iss”). It’s a Medieval form of [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] that shares some sounds & letters with [name_f]Eunice[/name_f], but is totally fresh IMO. It would make a very versatile MN!

[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] [name_f]Janice[/name_f]
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_u]Everly[/name_u] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] / [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Eva[/name_f] [name_f]Bella[/name_f]

Eunice… what about [name_f]Luna[/name_f] or a name with an -eun / -oon sound?
