Ada or Ramona

Ahh I’m so torn between these names for our baby due in November. Sorry I keep making topics with these names but I feel stuck on them. Today I’m feeling more Ada but yesterday it was Ramona!

Ada is so sweet and lovely. Ramona is pretty but feels a bit more punk rock :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:.

Popularity isn’t important to me but for some perspective… Ada is definitely more popular in my state, but not very popular. 34 babies were named Ada last year, at most 4 were named Ramona.

Ada wouldn’t need a nickname at all! Ramona could have some nicknames but I’m definitely not liking Romy (reminds me of Mitt Romney, Romani, and Romeo). For a sometimes nickname, Roxy is my favorite even if it is a stretch, and Mo could be cute for a more unisex option.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on these names? Vibes? Ideas for getting me unstuck?

I like both but I LOVE [name_f]Ada[/name_f]! I think it’s sweet and lovely, but I think [name_f]Ada[/name_f] has a bit of spunk too! If you want to make it more spunky you could make point of that with the middle name. I do agree there isn’t a lot of nickname potential, but once again there are middle names for that. But [name_f]Ada[/name_f] is so nice, I don’t even think it needs a nickname personally. [name_u]Or[/name_u] you could go with a longer version of [name_f]Ada[/name_f] (Adelaide, [name_f]Adalynn[/name_f], etc.) and use [name_f]Ada[/name_f] as a nickname!

I’m just curious, are you pronouncing it Add-uh or Ay-duh? I like both but I slightly prefer the Ay-duh pronunciation.

[name_f]Glad[/name_f] you think [name_f]Ada[/name_f] has spunk! Yes, I don’t think she needs a nickname at all!

I would pronounce it Ay-duh. Like [name_f]Ava[/name_f] with a d.

Definitely [name_f]Ada[/name_f] - sweet, vintage, classy. [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] makes me think of Disney villains for some reason and personally don’t like the name soundwise.

I have loved the name [name_f]Ada[/name_f] since I was a little girl because of the princess in the movie A Bug’s Life. So [name_f]Ada[/name_f] reminds me of someone caring and sweet, and a strong leader when needed to be.
[name_f]Ramona[/name_f] isn’t my style personally, but it doesn’t need to be. It reminds me of [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] from [name_u]Scott[/name_u] Pilgrim or [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] from [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] and Beezus, so definitely a little more “spunky” feeling.
I think [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] definitely has more nickname options, but I’m sure [name_f]Ada[/name_f] would be called [name_m]Ad[/name_m] sometimes and could go by [name_f]Addie[/name_f] as well if she wanted.

I am currently in the same boat, completely torn between 3 names that we love equally but for different reasons. What we did was made sure we picked middle names that would go with each name, then we wrote them all down on a piece of paper (each of us writing each name in both normal handwriting and cursive), and hung the paper in a spot we will see it often (ours is right in front of our toilet lol). Hopefully by seeing and saying them all often eventually one will sort of start sticking out more!

It has to be [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] for me! It has so much personality and verve and fire – and yes, a quirky, punk rock vibe.

[name_f]Ada[/name_f] is a lovely compact, demure classic. But it’s always felt just a tiny bit plain to me – even though I generally love shorter, simpler names – plus it’s rising in popularity and very close to the already mega-popular [name_f]Ava[/name_f].

I’m also in the same boat for a potential girl due in [name_u]November[/name_u]! Three or four strong options, no clear front-runner. We’ve still got time! What are the naming laws like where you are? Would you need to make a decision immediately or could you try out both names when you meet her?

I really love [name_f]Ada[/name_f]! So full of punch and spark as well as sweetness!

Id totally forgotten about the Bugs Life character!

Good idea about writing the names down and hanging them up, will have to give that a try. I’ve definitely written them multiple times. I do really like the R in [name_f]Ramona[/name_f], probably because my maiden name (well, it’s still my last name but won’t be hers) starts with an R.

Yes, thankfully we still have time! :joy:

I’m in the US and I think most everyone needs to choose a name at the hospital. I also don’t think I do well with decisions when tired and emotional so maybe that’s a good thing!

I love Ramona and Ada as sisters! Ramona is my favorite because it’s a bit longer and there are lots of pet name options.

I absolutely love Ada,it’s sweet, elegant, easy too pronounce and has a lovely meaning ,Ramona reminds me too much of the Ramones and is too 80s for me ,personally and just absolutely not my cup of tea

It’s definitely Ada for me. It’s just such an elegant, underused, slightly offbeat classic and I personally love that a nickname isn’t needed. I generally prefer names that don’t need nicknames, though in saying that Ramona doesn’t necessarily need one.

I do quite like Ramona though. I like the band and children’s book connection, and I like Mo as a nickname, but something is stopping me from loving it, something I can’t put my finger on. I prefer Paloma, which to me has such an unusual sound and an artistic vibe (because of Paloma Picasso) that I tend to appreciate in names.

In addition to everything I said above, Ada has a dark, Victorian vibe that I’m really loving at the moment, I think because of Holly Hunter’s character in The Piano, which is one of my favourite films (she’s Ada and her daughter, played by Anna Paquin, is Flora)

Because of the film, Ada has a feisty feminist vibe and a silent strength to it that elevates it all the more in my books.

I really like both names so this won’t be as helpful, I’m afraid.
[name_f]Ada[/name_f] feels a little more vintage but also more modern at the same time; it makes me think of Edwardian times first but then I can also totally imagine it on a modern girl. [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] feels a little more retro, probably due to the “mona” part, however, it feels retro in the best sense, makes me think of the book character as well as book characters such as [name_u]Scout[/name_u] from TKAM or [name_f]Matilda[/name_f].
I do think [name_f]Ada[/name_f] is a little more versatile, but on the right person, [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] is more fun.

I think [name_u]Romy[/name_u] would be my go-to nickname for [name_f]Ramona[/name_f], however, if that wouldn’t be usable, I’d go with [name_f]Momo[/name_f] (like the [name_m]German[/name_m] book), as the character has a similar vibe to me as [name_f]Ramona[/name_f].

As for the name I’d choose, I think I may be a little afraid of people using [name_f]Mona[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] which is why I would probably put it in the middle name spot or mostly call her by the chosen nickname.

You are the first person I’ve seen reference the alternative pronunciation of [name_f]Ada[/name_f] (Add-uh, as I think Ay-duh is more common). I use the Add-uh pronunciation for a story character (as its short for a name with that same sound) so its nice to see someone else mention.

As to the original question, [name_f]Ada[/name_f] all the way (but I might be biased).

I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else mention it either, I honestly thought the Add-uh pronunciation was the only way to pronounce it until I heard it somewhere on TV because I knew 2 girls in elementary school called [name_f]Ada[/name_f], but they pronounced it Add-uh. I am yet to meet an [name_f]Ada[/name_f] who pronounces it Ay-duh!!

I like [name_f]Ada[/name_f] but do wonder if she’d get lost in the sea of Avas.

The only [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] I know goes by [name_u]Roni[/name_u] or [name_f]Ro[/name_f] mostly which I think is adorable. I think [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] gets my vote!

Good luck

[name_u]Love[/name_u] Both  I’d go with [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] because I’d just love to hear it more whereas [name_f]Ada[/name_f] might blend in with all the other [name_m]Ad[/name_m]- names.

Oh that’s cool - I was a little worried when I named the character using that pronunciation that people would flat out tell me I was wrong (I literally explain the pronunciation at one point in the story) but you’ve made my day! Thanks. We have a semi-famous soap celebrity here in Australia named [name_f]Ada[/name_f], pronounced Ay-duh but that’s the only real life one I know of. It’s not that popular here at all.
