Additional question about Rowan!

I posted this on my poll in the other board, but want to cover my bases so posting here too!

Nameberry lists [name_u]Roan[/name_u] as an alternate spelling to [name_u]Rowan[/name_u]… However I personally pronounce these differently:

I grew up riding horses, the horse that I learned to ride on was considered a [name_u]Red[/name_u] [name_u]Roan[/name_u] (google it, they’re beautiful, there’s also [name_u]Blue[/name_u] Roans) Now, we always pronounced [name_u]Roan[/name_u] with one syllable, so that it rhymed with tone, phone, bone, moan, etc… I pronounce [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] exactly the way it looks: two syllables, emphasis on the first and a very short second syllable - ROW-an… Am I wrong here? I actually like ROW-an, with [name_u]Roan[/name_u] as a nickname.

I pronounce both names exactly as you do and have also always wondered why people look at [name_u]Roan[/name_u] as an alternate spelling of [name_u]Rowan[/name_u].

I’m the same. My aunt had a stud ranch and so I also grew up around the [name_u]Roan[/name_u] horses and I know a boy named [name_u]Roan[/name_u], twin to [name_u]Lane[/name_u].

[name_u]Roan[/name_u] pronounces his name Rone like Tone. Like the horse.

So I say [name_u]Roan[/name_u] like Rone and [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] like ROW-an. [name_m]Just[/name_m] like you. ^_^I love them both.

I pronounce both names the way you do. I don’t understand how/why [name_u]Roan[/name_u] would be pronounced the same way as [name_u]Rowan[/name_u]. [name_f]Love[/name_f] both names, btw!

Thanks everyone - So I’m not crazy!

I suppose it might depend. Because we’re talking about names and I’m not an equestrian, I pronounce both [name_u]Roan[/name_u] and [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] the same way. Or pretty much the same way. I pronounce [name_u]Roan[/name_u] as [name_f]Ro[/name_f]-an and [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] as [name_f]Ro[/name_f]-wan.

I spell both names the same way you do and I much prefer [name_u]Rowan[/name_u]. Great name!
