We’ve picked out [name_f]Adela[/name_f] for our baby due in [name_f]February[/name_f] - and now I’m having doubts/name anxiety! What do you think of [name_f]Adela[/name_f]?
We have agreed on our name criteria - a name that is traditional, familiar but preferably not in the top 100, easy to say and spell, and that has a range of nicknames that we like. Does [name_f]Adela[/name_f] meet these criteria?! I love that it’s a saints name, a royal name, and both familiar but a little different (there is only one [name_m]Ad[/name_m]- name in the Australian top 100). We prefer the nickname Dela, but are happy with [name_f]Addie[/name_f] should she choose it as a fitting-in option. My husband loves it, and I do too, I think I’m probably just anxious!
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think she’ll spend her whole life saying, “like [name_f]Adele[/name_f], but with an ‘a’ on the end”? [name_m]Will[/name_m] people think it’s made up?
We’ve thrown around [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] (but I’m not keen on [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]), [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] (but we don’t like the nicknames), [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] (DH has an annoying work colleague with this name, but I do love it), [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] (out for family reasons), [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] (top 50 here), [name_f]Esme[/name_f] (DH doesn’t love it), [name_f]Flora[/name_f] and [name_f]Freya[/name_f] (I don’t love them).
[name_f]Adela[/name_f] is lovely! I have a minor issue with it, but it’s for purely personal reasons, and shouldn’t make you not use it, surely! (I went to high school with an [name_f]Adella[/name_f]–who said [name_m]ADD[/name_m]-eh-lah, and not ah-[name_u]DELL[/name_u]-ah–and I’ve come to vastly prefer it her way, although I know it’s not the traditional pronunciation. She is Brazilian, though, so I wonder if that might be the Brazilian pronunciation? In either case, I can’t use it because I wouldn’t want to put my daughter through, “No, it’s said [name_m]ADD[/name_m]-eh-lah. Nope, spelled A-D-E-L-A…” ad infinitum. :/) [name_f]Adele[/name_f] is one of my absolute favorite girls’ names, though, so I can easily see the charm in [name_f]Adela[/name_f], and would be tickled pink to meet one! It’s an absolutely breathtaking name. I like it best from your options, too, although I am a fan of [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] and [name_f]Esme[/name_f]. It seems perfect for you, too–I would have never thought that people would think it’s made-up. It suits all your criteria, it’s a gorgeous name. I say go for it!
I think [name_f]Adela[/name_f] is beautiful! I absolutely love it. It does fit all your criteria, and I don’t think it should have to many pronunciation issues (I can only think of two ways it could possibly be pronounced, and ah-[name_u]DELL[/name_u]-ah is the first). I don’t think you need to worry, it’s a lovely name.
I love the name [name_f]Adela[/name_f]. It’s probably more likely to be spelt correctly as well unlike [name_f]Adele[/name_f]. I know someone named [name_f]Adele[/name_f] and she has had her name spelt so many different ways: [name_f]Adell[/name_f], [name_u]Adel[/name_u], [name_f]Adelle[/name_f], Adeil etc. (some people are crazy!). I also know a foster girl who is 16 months and named [name_f]Adela[/name_f]. Sweetest child you will ever meet. It’s not super popular but heard of. I think that it wouldn’t be as popular as [name_f]Adele[/name_f] either. What were you thinking for a middle name?
Thank you so much for the reassurance, I really appreciate it!! I feel better about it already! I think I’m just getting freaked out by the reality of birthing and looking after a baby, and all the decisions that need to be made. The middle name will be M@ry - an important honour name for us
[name_f]Adela[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is stunning, what a fabulous choice!
[name_f]Adela[/name_f] is one of those names that I would have no trouble recognising but also seems very unusual, basically the best kind of name. I think it sounds perfect, especially as it fits all of your criteria. It is 100% better than all of the other names you’ve listed, I hope you stick with it!
