Adelais - cute variety of Adelaide?

I just saw a girl name “[name_f]Adelais[/name_f]”, which seems like a very cute alternative to uber-popular [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] or [name_u]Ade[/name_u], and lends itself to the super awesome nickname [name_f]Lacey[/name_f].
Thoughts? Cute, or likely to be a bother with constantly having to spell it and correct people…?

I came across it, and I like it. It’s definitely a cool alternative to [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], which I agree seems to be growing in popularity. And it has a pleasant sound, similar to Adelise which I also really like. There probably would be some spelling, and possibly pronunciation issues, but I don’t think they’d be too difficult to overcome. It’s not a bad option.

[name_f]Adelais[/name_f] was on our list for one of our daughters. It looks beautiful when written but saying it over and over as you often do with children - it becomes a mouthful. I’m not a fan of the nn [name_f]Lacey[/name_f] and don’t feel it’s related at all to the correct pronunciation of [name_f]Adelais[/name_f].

Is it prn [name_m]Add[/name_m] uh lay? If so, it’s very pretty. However, I see spelling and prn issues in your future

I love it!

Some brief research tells me it’s [name_m]German[/name_m], and if Google Translate doesn’t fail me, then it’s pronounced like A-duh-lay, with the first syllable rhyming with the A as in the word cat (anyone who actually speaks [name_m]German[/name_m], feel free to correct me). I personally prefer the harder, more definitive ending of [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], but this variant is still pretty cute.

What about [name_f]Adeline[/name_f]? I think it sounds amazing too.

I love [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] and [name_f]Adelais[/name_f] is sweet too, but I don’t really see the connection to [name_f]Lacey[/name_f].

I like [name_f]Adelais[/name_f]. It is beautiful. I dislike [name_f]Lacey[/name_f] as a nickname though.

I’m really liking it! I would like to know the true pronunciation although I like it either way (A-duh-lay or A-duh-lays).

If it truly were a [name_m]German[/name_m] name, it would be pronounced something like [name_m]AH[/name_m]-deh-lice (yes, last syllable rhyming or sounding like the icky head bug). That is a guess based purely on [name_m]German[/name_m] phonetics, because I have lived in Germany and never seen or heard this name. It reminds me of [name_f]Anais[/name_f], which nameberry says is pronounced “an-nah-EES”. Could it possibly be [name_m]AH[/name_m]-deh-lah-EES?

I love it! I’d be nervous about a lifetime of having to correct people mispronouncing though. That wouldn’t completely rule it out for me… if you truly love it than maybe it’s meant to be!

I agree and believe it’s pronounced ‘ah-deh-lees or lay-is’. The ‘s’ is not silent.

Unless a diaeresis is being included over the “I” in [name_f]Adelais[/name_f], the [name_m]French[/name_m] wouldn’t say it like [name_f]Ana[/name_f]ïs. I’ve always been under the impression it was similar to ad-eh-lay, although if we’re saying it in proper [name_m]French[/name_m], it wouldn’t sound that American. I’m not convinced that it’s [name_m]German[/name_m], either–I’ve heard it has [name_m]French[/name_m] roots. It probably originates from the [name_m]German[/name_m] Adalheidis, so it’s been lumped in as a [name_m]German[/name_m] name, although it might not be a [name_m]German[/name_m] form.

I’m not sure how I feel about it honestly. I briefly considered it for the nn [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] (which I’m massively in love with right now!), but since I pronounce it with the silent “S”, I figured [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] made just as much sense and would have less issues with pronunciation/spelling/etc. It does have a sweet sound, but as far as [name_u]Adel[/name_u]- names go, I much prefer [name_f]Adele[/name_f], [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], [name_f]Adeline[/name_f], and even Adalise/[name_f]Adelisa[/name_f]/[name_f]Adeliza[/name_f].

Good luck!

This name is meant to have a diaeresis over the I (as is [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], which was originally pronounced ah-del-ah-EE-duh). Therefore the name would be pronounced ah-del-ah-EES.

I’m afraid it looks and sounds made up to me, and seems to be causing major pronunciation issues, so why not just use made up Adelace instead and then you can have [name_f]Lacey[/name_f] as a Nickname?

That was how the family pronounced it - like “[name_m]Ah[/name_m]-del-ay-ees”

When introduced, and spoken quickly, it sounded like “[name_u]Adel[/name_u]-lace”, hence my liking “lacey” as nickname.
But in my experience, nicknames don’t have to be a perfect match to the name, and often really cute ones aren’t… (LOTS of examples… [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] = [name_f]Trixie[/name_f]?? etc)
