Thoughts on the name [name_m]Adonis[/name_m]? Greek mythology name for God of Beauty and meaning “[name_m]Lord[/name_m]” I think its beautiful and unique. But I read on forums that its also used as a regular word to describe a very good looking male, for example “he’s such an adonis” … lol never in my life have I heard someone just casually use this word in a sentence. What do you think? Acceptable name choice or am I out of the loop?
I quite like it in theory! I think the rapper [name_m]Drake[/name_m]’s son is named [name_m]Adonis[/name_m], actually? I can totally see the appeal, but it might be a bit brave?
I like it! I think the nickname [name_f]Addie[/name_f]/Ad makes it useable. I’ve never heard it used in the context you said - I’ve never heard of it at all, actually.
However, I might feel a little weird if I was named [name_m]Adonis[/name_m] and I looked up my name, only to see that it means a sexy man lol
I’ve known two boys named [name_m]Adonis[/name_m], so it doesn’t seem strange to me! I have, however, also heard adonis used in a sentence to describe a handsome man (a bunch of times), if you’re worried about that.
I’ve seen people say it’s a lot to put on a child, which may be true, but both boys I knew liked their name!!
I think it has a lovely sound, and its very unexpected. I suppose just consider the heaviness of it!
I love the name [name_m]Adonis[/name_m]. I’ve never heard it used in that context in real life. I think of [name_u]Michael[/name_u] b [name_u]Jordan[/name_u] as [name_m]Adonis[/name_m] [name_m]Creed[/name_m]. He goes by [name_m]Donnie[/name_m] or d sometimes to make it more approachable
I really enjoy [name_m]Adonis[/name_m]- great sounds - familiar but not used
I can see it being the next [name_u]Atlas[/name_u] - the mythological names are a bit shocking at first but the name itself is easy to pronounce and spell so I think after a bit of exposure it will be well accepted.
Check up on its mythology and you’ll see where the “sexy man” association comes from. I don’t personally know anyone who uses it in conversation… but I could see how it could be used. Is it any different from girl names that mean beautiful? I don’t think so, and I like the idea being turned on its head!
I think the name looks and sounds handsome, but I think the meaning might be a little much for a baby. Kind of like naming a baby [name_m]Cupid[/name_m] or [name_m]Narcissus[/name_m] for example. At the same time, one of my favorite names is [name_m]Amadeus[/name_m], so I’m not one to talk! [name_m]Adonis[/name_m] is not too far out there and it is a familiar enough name that I can see it being useable.
Out of the loop. Not just used for men who are gorgeous, but for men who know they are gorgeous!
I wouldn’t use it because it’s so clearly tied to that Greek mythology character alone. As you’ve already picked up on, it’s used to associate with a man who is extremely handsome. I think it definitely sets itself up to be an expectation name (however unfair that may be) where kids either make fun of a person with that name because they don’t think he’s handsome, or perhaps the young man himself may have some self confidence issues because he doesn’t feel like he stacks up to that image. Greek gods exemplify extremes of traits and are known with their name so closely associated with it and for those reasons I think they should stay with the characters.
I don’t think the young kids today know too much about the myth and I’ve never heard anyone under 50 use the name as the term for a handsome young man. If anyone would bully the kid for “not living up to the name” I don’t think it would be his classmates. We had mythology units and never studied him even in AP classes, as he is not as popular. TBH I forget it is the name of a god and not just the name from [name_m]Creed[/name_m].
I absolutely love [name_m]Adonis[/name_m]. I’ve always been a greek mythos fan. I also really enjoy the name Alcides as well. (AL side ease) which was the name [name_m]Hercules[/name_m]’ step father gave him as a prince.
My friends son is named [name_m]Adonis[/name_m] and it suits him perfectly. It’s a very strong, unique name. I love it. I would definitely say it’s useable but I don’t think just anybody could pull it off.
I like [name_m]Adonis[/name_m]. I’m not sure if I would be brave enough to use it, but there are a couple of celebrities (or celebrity babies) named it, so I think it’s becoming more accepted as a given name.
Maybe it’s an age or location thing, but I’ve never actually heard anyone use [name_m]Adonis[/name_m] to mean “a handsome man” in conversation. I’ve read it in books, but I don’t think the expression is that common in real life. I don’t think many kids would know about the mythological [name_m]Adonis[/name_m]… At least where I live, it isn’t something you’d learn about in school.
I grew up being really into mythology ([name_u]Percy[/name_u] [name_u]Jackson[/name_u] anyone?) and then I also had Latin at school, so I can’t really see it on somebody who is not a (fictional) god. Also, the connotation with the male “bimbo” is pretty strong for me.
But I can see the appeal and it is a cool name + using a name like this wouldn’t be as unusual or “forbidden” in the US compared to where I live…
I love [name_m]Adonis[/name_m]! It has such a strong and dashing sound, and nicknames [name_u]Adi[/name_u] or [name_m]Don[/name_m]/Donnie are simply adorable. I don’t know how usable it is, but as a name I adore it.
