Adopting a baby girl but can't agree on her name!

My husband and I found out today that we’ve been officially chosen to adopt a baby girl, who is due in [name]September[/name]. We’re so excited! Except…I have always loved the name [name]Sophia[/name] (although after doing some research, I’ve realized it’s probably a bit too popular right now), but my husband doesn’t like it at all and is set on [name]Zoe[/name].

I wouldn’t mind [name]Zoe[/name] so much if I thought it sounded better with our 3-year-old son’s name, which is [name]Noah[/name]. I’m not sure if that matters, but I just can’t picture calling my daughter [name]Zoe[/name] anyway.

Neither of us wants to give her an unusual name or spelling, but I do think we’d prefer something slightly less popular than [name]Sophia[/name]. Also, we have a hyphenated last name (both names are two syllables) so preferably nothing too long.

My list:
[name]Audrey[/name]
[name]Caroline[/name]
[name]Claire[/name]
[name]Julie[/name]/[name]Julia[/name]
[name]Laura[/name]
[name]Olivia[/name]

His list:
[name]Amalia[/name]
[name]Cassandra[/name]
[name]Jessica[/name] (after his best friend)
[name]Lucy[/name]
[name]Natalie[/name]
[name]Nichole[/name]
[name]Veronica[/name]
[name]Zoe[/name]

We would be eternally grateful if someone could assist us in finding the perfect name for our first daughter, and possible middle name ideas as well! Thank you so much.

  • [name]Adam[/name]

I can up with these first name & middle names with the list that you said: “I’m not really good with suggesting names, I’m too bias”

[name]Audrey[/name] [name]Nichole[/name]
[name]Caroline[/name] [name]Julia[/name]
[name]Natalie[/name] [name]Claire[/name]
[name]Lucy[/name] [name]Cassandra[/name]
[name]Jessica[/name] [name]Veronica[/name]
[name]Zoe[/name] [name]Olivia[/name]
[name]Laura[/name] [name]Amalia[/name]

[name]Hope[/name] I help.

My husband says he adores [name]Natalie[/name] [name]Claire[/name]…I’m not sold on [name]Natalie[/name], though. Which names do you think age the best?

Congrats! [name]Sophia[/name] is beautiful, there’s a reason it’s so popular!

Too bad no one could pronounce or spell [name]Zofie[/name], the Czech version of [name]Sophia[/name].

[name]Noah[/name] and [name]Sophie[/name] (maybe a little less popular and a mix between your two names)
[name]Noah[/name] and [name]Willow[/name]
[name]Noah[/name] and [name]Caroline[/name]
[name]Noah[/name] and [name]Molly[/name]
[name]Noah[/name] and [name]Clara[/name]
[name]Noah[/name] and [name]Juliet[/name]
[name]Noah[/name] and [name]Jessa[/name] (from [name]Jessica[/name])
[name]Noah[/name] and [name]Natalie[/name]
[name]Noah[/name] and [name]Fiona[/name]

[name]Natalie[/name] [name]Sophia[/name]
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Mae[/name]
[name]Caroline[/name] [name]Jessa[/name]
[name]Molly[/name] [name]Sophia[/name]
[name]Clara[/name] [name]Juliet[/name]
[name]Fiona[/name] [name]Willow[/name]

[name]Hi[/name] there! The first name that came to me as a cross between [name]Sophia[/name] and [name]Zoe[/name] is [name]Sophie[/name]. It’s sweet, a bit less popular (though people may assume her full name is [name]Sophia[/name]/[name]Sofia[/name]) and sounds good with [name]Noah[/name]. [name]Sylvie[/name] is another name that is sweet and pretty but much less popular than [name]Sophie[/name]. Since your last name is a total of four syllables I’d go with something with one or two syllables. My favorites from your lists are [name]Claire[/name] (perfect with [name]Noah[/name]!) and [name]Lucy[/name] (also great with [name]Noah[/name]). Here are some other names you might like:

[name]Maya[/name]
[name]Phoebe[/name]
[name]Ada[/name]
[name]Alma[/name]
[name]Cleo[/name]
[name]Tessa[/name]
[name]Eve[/name]
[name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Cora[/name]
[name]Lily[/name]
[name]Mia[/name]
[name]Georgia[/name]
[name]Greta[/name]
[name]Sonia[/name]
[name]Rose[/name]
[name]Clara[/name]
[name]Stella[/name]
[name]Ella[/name]
[name]Alice[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name]

[name]Hope[/name] that helps! Let us know if you like any names being suggested!

[name]Sophie[/name] is a great suggestion! My husband likes that a bit better than [name]Sophia[/name], so we added that to our list along with [name]Clara[/name], [name]Jessa[/name] and [name]Fiona[/name], although we’re concerned that the latter two may not flow nicely with our last names. My husband thinks that [name]Willow[/name] and [name]Molly[/name] don’t age very well, but I disagree. I like [name]Willow[/name] a lot.

You suggested [name]Juliet[/name], one of my favorite names! Unfortunately, it sounds awkward with my last name (the first of the two).

Thank you so much!

[name]Sylvie[/name] is a beautiful name! We’re unsure if people would think it was a nickname for [name]Sylvia[/name], though, so we added [name]Sylvia[/name] to our list. We both like it a lot, actually…it may be a top contender! Any similar suggestions, or middle name ideas? My husband likes [name]Sylvia[/name] [name]Claire[/name].

We’ve also added [name]Phoebe[/name], [name]Mia[/name], [name]Clara[/name] and [name]Alice[/name] to our list. We love [name]Ella[/name] as well but we know three babies with that name right now! I love [name]Ruby[/name] too but my last name begins with a B so it doesn’t sound right.

Thank you so much for your help.

We have another question…would it pose any problems if we simply gave our daughter only one of our last names, if we absolutely love a name that doesn’t sound good with the other last name? Is this even possible?

I’m glad you like [name]Sylvia[/name]. [name]Sylvia[/name] [name]Claire[/name] is absolutely gorgeous! Some names that are similar to [name]Sylvia[/name] are [name]Amelia[/name], [name]Estella[/name], [name]Evelyn[/name], [name]Cecilia[/name], [name]Sabrina[/name] and [name]Nadia[/name].

To address your question, no I don’t think it would pose problems if you gave your daughter only one of your last names (in fact, in many families where parents have different last names the children only get one last name). The only concern would be if your son already has both last names it might make it confusing for your children to have slightly different surnames.

You said you had a son ,named [name]Noah[/name], right? Well I say if you gave [name]Noah[/name] two last names, give your daughter the same. It could make one of them feel werid for/or not having the 1/or 2 last names. But thats how I feel. [name]Do[/name] what you think is best.

Congratulations!!! [name]How[/name] exciting! You have such beautiful names - it’s going to be hard to choose. I love the name [name]Sylvie[/name] instead of [name]Sylvia[/name]…it doesn’t feel like a nickname, but instead feels much more fresh and stylish. [name]Sylvie[/name] [name]Fiona[/name] is beautiful as is [name]Sylvie[/name] [name]Claire[/name] or [name]Sylvie[/name] [name]Clara[/name]. I also want to suggest the name [name]Cora[/name]. I think it is so beautiful and fits with your list - I also think that [name]Cora[/name] and [name]Noah[/name] fit together without sounding too matchy. [name]Corinna[/name] is lovely too.

I think you guys should keep searching for a name that you love and sounds nice with both of your names. I’m assuming your son has both last names and it would be nice if both sibs had the same name…makes your family more unified. [name]Hope[/name] this helps and good luck!

We’ve been talking it over and [name]Sylvia[/name] [name]Claire[/name] seems to be our favorite (that we agree on) right now! We also really like [name]Nadia[/name], though. My husband is still pushing [name]Zoe[/name], though, and he says that [name]Sylvia[/name] reminds him too much of an old lady. We’ve also been thinking about [name]Stella[/name], but my husband has an aunt named [name]Estelle[/name] so we’re not sure if that’d work out (though we don’t have much contact with his family).

When we adopted [name]Noah[/name], we gave him just my last name, but shortly after we changed all of our last names to the hyphenated version. So I guess it would be awkward to leave our daughter out.

Thank you! [name]Do[/name] you think that [name]Sylvie[/name] ages well? I can’t seem to convince my husband of that. I think I prefer [name]Sylvie[/name] to [name]Sylvia[/name] now that you said that.

I really do like the name [name]Cora[/name], as well as [name]Corinne[/name] or other variants of those names. If we were to use [name]Cora[/name], do you have any suggestions for a middle name? My husband doesn’t like any of my suggestions ([name]Julia[/name], [name]Fiona[/name], and [name]Rebecca[/name] so far).

Thanks again!

[name]Sylvie[/name] is such a sweet name and I love [name]Sophie[/name] too.

[name]Sylvia[/name] [name]Claire[/name] is a good combo but nms.

I like your suggestion of [name]Corinne[/name] but [name]Cora[/name] and [name]Noah[/name] is a little matchy.

[name]Sylvie[/name] [name]Corinne[/name] I think that this is beautiful.
[name]Sophie[/name] [name]Alexandra[/name]
[name]Corinne[/name] [name]Susannah[/name]
[name]Corinne[/name] [name]Helena[/name]
[name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Corinne[/name]
[name]Sophie[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name]
[name]Sophie[/name] [name]Anneliese[/name]

Congratulations!!

[name]Caroline[/name] [name]Zoe[/name] (nn [name]Carrie[/name]?)
[name]Audrey[/name] [name]Claire[/name]
[name]Julia[/name] [name]Natalie[/name]
[name]Jessica[/name] [name]Claire[/name]
[name]Cassandra[/name] [name]Julie[/name] (nn [name]Cassie[/name]?)
[name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Hope[/name]
[name]Mia[/name] [name]Louise[/name]
[name]Sylvie[/name] [name]Claire[/name]
[name]Sylvie[/name] [name]Tess[/name]/[name]Tessa[/name]

What about a biblical name like [name]Noah[/name]?
[name]Eve[/name]
[name]Elizabeth[/name] or [name]Beth[/name] or [name]Eliza[/name]
[name]Leah[/name]
[name]Mary[/name]
[name]Miriam[/name]
[name]Hannah[/name]
[name]Tabitha[/name]
[name]Abigail[/name]

When I read this story I started to think of names like [name]Faith[/name]/[name]Hope[/name]/[name]Joy[/name]?

What do you think?

Congratulations! [name]Sophia[/name] is such a beautiful name - what a shame about popularity, right? But anyways, [name]Sylvia[/name] is an excellent alternative. Not one of personal favourites, but I see it’s appeal. I do prefer [name]Sylvie[/name], however I am somewhat reminded of a cat… :stuck_out_tongue:

[name]Cora[/name] is definitely a favourite of mine from your choices. It is so sweet and simple but also elegant and timeless. If you are looking for a full name for [name]Cora[/name], how about [name]Corinne[/name] (which you already have), [name]Coraline[/name], [name]Caroline[/name], [name]Coral[/name], [name]Coralie[/name], [name]Cornelia[/name] or [name]Cordelia[/name].

I sort of like [name]Cora[/name] just on its own, but my favourite full name is [name]Coralie[/name] I think. [name]How[/name] about…

[name]Corinne[/name] [name]Abigail[/name]
[name]Corinne[/name] [name]Theodora[/name]
[name]Corinne[/name] [name]Inez[/name]

[name]Coraline[/name] [name]Scarlett[/name]
[name]Coraline[/name] [name]Delilah[/name]
[name]Coraline[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name]

[name]Caroline[/name] [name]June[/name]

[name]Caroline[/name] [name]Parker[/name]

[name]Coral[/name] [name]Olivia[/name]
[name]Coral[/name] [name]Penelope[/name]
[name]Coral[/name] [name]Sophia[/name]

[name]Coralie[/name] [name]Mabel[/name]
[name]Coralie[/name] [name]Elsa[/name]
[name]Coralie[/name] [name]Eleanor[/name]

[name]Cornelia[/name] [name]Evelyn[/name]
[name]Cornelia[/name] [name]Indigo[/name]
[name]Cornelia[/name] [name]Jessamine[/name]

[name]Cordelia[/name] [name]Lachlan[/name]
[name]Cordelia[/name] [name]Veronique[/name]
[name]Cordelia[/name] [name]Lucienne[/name]

Some other names you might like…

[name]Scarlett[/name]
[name]Sosie[/name]
[name]Helena[/name]
[name]Holly[/name]
[name]Vivian[/name] or [name]Vivienne[/name]

[name]Juniper[/name]
[name]Lila[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name]
[name]Adelaide[/name]
[name]Adele[/name]

[name]Matilda[/name]
[name]Hanna[/name]
[name]Eve[/name]
[name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Annora[/name]
[name]Annika[/name]

I tried to include a few different styles of names, because I don’t know what you like, but I hope some of those are okay!

Good luck!

Bounce :)(:

Congratulations on your little girl!

I see that you and your husband are considering [name]Sylvia[/name], but I kind of agree with your husband; it sounds a little too old lady to me as well. I prefer [name]Sylvie[/name] to [name]Sylvia[/name], although I’m personally not the biggest fan of either. But I can see [name]Sylvie[/name] aging well whereas I cannot imagine [name]Sylvia[/name] on a little girl.
From your other list, I love the name [name]Claire[/name]. It’s adorable, classic, pretty, and ages well. That is definitely my favorite from your list. I also love [name]Caroline[/name] and [name]Cassandra[/name]. Not sure why there is a C pattern though… Lol
I also loved the suggestions of [name]Cora[/name] and [name]Sophie[/name]. In fact, [name]Sophie[/name] [name]Claire[/name] would make a great name!

If you’re still open to other suggestions:
[name]Audra[/name] (alternative to [name]Audrey[/name], which is on its way up the charts)
[name]Tessa[/name]
[name]Charlotte[/name]
[name]Lily[/name] (maybe too popular though)
[name]Stella[/name]
[name]Amelia[/name] (love this but it might be too long)
[name]Gemma[/name]
[name]Margaret[/name] (I also love the name [name]Molly[/name], and [name]Margaret[/name] gives your daughter the option to fall back on [name]Margaret[/name], or even [name]Maggie[/name], but you can can her [name]Molly[/name])

Good luck and I hope this helps!

With [name]Noah[/name] I [name]LOVE[/name] the name [name]Sylvie[/name]. I think it is unique enough, ages well and seems to combine the love of [name]Sophia[/name] and [name]Zoe[/name] well.
Good luck and congrats!

Names ending in the EE sound typically sound like nicknames or diminutives. [name]Natalie[/name], [name]Chloe[/name], [name]Zoe[/name], [name]Julie[/name]… I don’t think [name]Sylvie[/name] is an exception. If you love [name]Sylvie[/name], go with [name]Sylvia[/name] and call her [name]Sylvie[/name]. Or [name]Livie[/name].

I love [name]Caroline[/name] from your list. I also think [name]Carolina[/name] (Care-oh-leena) is beautiful. You could call her [name]Cara[/name], [name]Carrie[/name], [name]Lina[/name], [name]Carly[/name]…

[name]Noah[/name] and [name]Charlotte[/name] “[name]Lottie[/name], [name]Charlie[/name]”
[name]Noah[/name] and [name]Amy[/name]
[name]Noah[/name] and [name]Elise[/name] “[name]Ella[/name], [name]Lisa[/name], [name]Ellie[/name]”
[name]Noah[/name] and [name]Eloise[/name] “[name]Ella[/name], [name]Ellie[/name]”
[name]Noah[/name] and [name]Esme[/name]
[name]Noah[/name] and [name]Twila[/name]/[name]Twyla[/name]
[name]Noah[/name] and [name]Jana[/name]
[name]Noah[/name] and [name]Aurora[/name] “[name]Aura[/name], [name]Rory[/name]”
[name]Noah[/name] and [name]Cecily[/name] “[name]Lily[/name]”
[name]Noah[/name] and [name]Piper[/name]
[name]Noah[/name] and [name]Jocelyn[/name]
[name]Noah[/name] and [name]Rosaline[/name]/[name]Rosalie[/name]
[name]Noah[/name] and [name]Megan[/name]
[name]Noah[/name] and [name]Selena[/name]

My husband and I would like to thank everyone for all of your suggestions. Unfortunately, this morning at church we found out that one of my family friends’ daughters passed away earlier today, so we now want to incorporate a name that begins with A (to honor her). We were thinking perhaps [name]Abigail[/name] [name]Corinne[/name] or [name]Audra[/name] [name]Corinne[/name].

Also, someone here suggested we go with a biblical theme since we picked [name]Noah[/name] for our son…we like that idea, as our faith is very important to us. I wish we could name her [name]Eve[/name], but my name is [name]Adam[/name], ha ha. Luckily [name]Abigail[/name] seems to fit…but is it too common right now?

Thanks everyone, we’ve added some wonderful names to our lists from all of your help.

Oh congrats!
Hmmm… after looking at all the names some suggestions I have are,
[name]Livya[/name]- pronounced liv-vee-ya
[name]Lydia[/name]
[name]Lida[/name] and
[name]Zoe[/name]- pronounced zowe
The middle name I came up with are,
[name]Livya[/name] [name]Claire[/name] you could call her L.C/[name]Elsie[/name]
[name]Lydia[/name] [name]Zoe[/name]- for your husband a possible nickname if it’s not too much of a stretch is [name]Daisy[/name] since the ending if [name]Lydia[/name] is dia and dia is spanish for day and her middle name would start with a Z so [name]Day[/name]-Z
[name]Lida[/name] [name]Rose[/name] like the song. [name]Hope[/name] that’s not to corny, and
[name]Zoe[/name] [name]Sylvia[/name] since [name]Sylvia[/name] is a favorite.
[name]Happy[/name] name choosing!
