Agnes vs Agatha

I recently thought about these two names so here’s some questions to see what you think -

  1. Which one is your favourite?
  2. Would you use either one?
  3. Which name is more likely to be on a creative person?
  4. Which name is more likely to be on a sporty person?
  5. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think there is the potential for both or one of the names to get popular? And if so how popular?

Not pregnant and won’t be having kids soon but I’m curious to hear what you think.

I prefer [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] due to the softer, more romantic feel.

  1. I prefer [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]. It reminds me of the musician [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] Obel, which is positive imo. For some reason [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] reminds me of goats.

  2. No, I wouldn’t use them for myself.

  3. Going back to [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] Obel, I think [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] is more likely to be creative or artsy.

  4. I can see [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] being more sporty, but it’s hard to pinpoint since I’ve never really known anybody with these names.

  5. No I don’t think they’re going to get popular anytime soon. I definitely think they fall into the condemned genre of “old lady” names.

I like [name_f]Agatha[/name_f]! It sounds intelligent yet mysterious to me. The nickname [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] is also adorable :slight_smile:

I think there’s the potential for [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] or [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] to become more popular than they are right now, but I doubt they’ll become the next [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]. At least not for a long time.

    [name_f]Agatha[/name_f]. Really it’s because [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] sounds old ladyish to me.

    No.

  3. Which name is more likely to be on a creative person?
    Either, because her parents clearly put thought into her name rather than playing Russian Roulette with the Top 10 list. Her creativity comes from her DNA.

  4. Which name is more likely to be on a sporty person?
    Either. I can imagine jock kids cheering either name as [name_f]Agatha[/name_f]/[name_f]Agnes[/name_f] dribbles the soccer ball towards the goal.

  5. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think there is the potential for both or one of the names to get popular? And if so how popular?
    [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] has more potential than [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] because it has a more universally appealing sound. However, with the masses preferring names such as [name_u]Hayden[/name_u]/[name_u]Aiden[/name_u]/[name_u]Brayden[/name_u], [name_u]Brinley[/name_u], various selections from Twilight, and the ever-popular [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]/[name_f]Olivia[/name_f]/[name_f]Emma[/name_f], I doubt [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] will get popular either.

I LOL at the fact that the American Girl doll [name_f]Samantha[/name_f] had 2 best friends who were twins named [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] and [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], since these names are often paired on Nameberry.

I agree with the above. If you live in an area where “old lady names” are getting popular then you might start to see a few girls named [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] or [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], but even then I don’t see it spiking with the masses.

I live in NYC, and [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] or [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] would fit right in here in my neighborhood. I love them both! If I had to choose, probably [name_f]Agatha[/name_f]. I’d call either [name_f]Aggie[/name_f], so adorable!

Would I use them? Both as middle names I would consider . [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] more as a first name.

Creative ? Either is possible I see it more with [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] maybe due to [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] [name_u]Christie[/name_u].

Sporty either

[name_m]Will[/name_m] they become popular ? Not sure but trendy yes. I can honestly picture a teenage girl someday with one of those names, especially [name_f]Agatha[/name_f].

I like the sound of [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] better-- it’s softer, but I love the meaning of [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]. I somewhat prefer the Spanish pronunciation, [name_f]Inez[/name_f] (EE-nez). Nest or [name_u]Nesta[/name_u] are great nns for [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] too!

[name_f]Aggie[/name_f] is a cute NN for either.

[name_f]Agnes[/name_f] has been on my list for such a long time, but my husband and family always make fun of the name. I love [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] [name_u]Christie[/name_u] but not a fan of the name myself. I think the reason [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] appeals to me so much is the nickname Nessarose or [name_f]Nessie[/name_f]. I was hoping Despicable Me’s [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] would make it more popular, but it appears like it will not. :frowning:

I think [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] is beautiful. [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] for me has always felt harsh or posh in a bad way and like a villain’s name.
