Is this firmly in the guilty pleasure zone or a quirky middle name choice?
I’ve just discovered [name_f]Alcyone[/name_f] recently and I’m really starting to like it… My top name combinations are family names with classic names I like and I have been thinking of adding quirkier names in the middle such as to spice up the combinations.
Alycone is from Greek Mythology and is pronounced al-[name_m]SIE[/name_m]-ə-nee.
Well I know two "Halcion"s (spelling variation of [name_u]Halcyon[/name_u]) that were born decades apart.
[name_m]Both[/name_m] names are similar and from the same legend so why not?
I had no idea about the “[name_u]Halcyon[/name_u] days” when I met Halcion.
[name_f]Ellie[/name_f] Goulding named her album “[name_u]Halcyon[/name_u]” and its re-release “[name_u]Halcyon[/name_u] Days” so that was when I read up on the legend of [name_f]Alcyone[/name_f] and Ceyx with their transformation into the [name_u]Halcyon[/name_u] birds. Simply because I had a friend named Halcion and I was intrigued to find out where her name came from, I asked her about it after and even she herself was ignorant of her names origins.
I think it’s fairly pretty, but I do have a bit of trouble with the pronunciation? And I do think that there would probably be a lot of mispronunciations…however, as a mn, I think it’s completely fair game!
There’s a gorgeous locally-owned coffee shop that my husband and I frequent called [name_f]Alcyone[/name_f], only they pronounce it “al-see-OWN.” It has a lot of sentimental value to us, the people there have become like family. In addition to the [name_u]Halcyon[/name_u] connection, [name_f]Alcyone[/name_f] is also the brightest star in Pleiades. I would use this name in a heartbeat if not for the fact that [name_f]Alice[/name_f] is our top girl pick and the fact that I don’t know if my Husband would go for using a “place name” - he’s usually against those, and I’m not sure the fact that the place was named FROM the mythology and the sentimental value would be enough to convince him otherwise.
ETA: I’ve even considered using [name_f]Alcyone[/name_f] nn [name_f]Alice[/name_f], but not sure that would fly…
I think it would frequently get pronounced as “[name_m]Al[/name_m]-[name_m]CY[/name_m]-own”, which is considerably less attractive than its real pronunciation.
I love [name_f]Alcyone[/name_f]. She’s frequently on our middle name list. I think she’d be okay up front, but I prefer her as a middle name. I think I prefer [name_u]Halcyon[/name_u] as a first, because the pronunciation is more intuitive, and I like the adorable Halcy as a nickname.
