Aldous

Nameberry defines this name as “somewhat stuffy,” but I like the literary connection (and don’t care for [name_m]Huxley[/name_m] or Hux). My husband also likes this name (one of VERY FEW our tastes intersect on).

[name_m]Aldous[/name_m].

Can you see it on a little boy? I have students named [name_m]Cassius[/name_m] and [name_m]Aksel[/name_m], I feel like [name_m]Aldous[/name_m] could fit right in.

I don’t find [name_m]Aldous[/name_m] too stuffy but rather find him quite refreshing really. It doesn’t have that weight to it that some older male names can.

The only thing that’d put me off personally is the [name_m]Al[/name_m] nickname which I’m not fond of myself.

Aldous Orion would be a great combo.

Yeah I am not fond of [name_m]Al[/name_m] either, but we don’t do nicknames in our family. So he would always be called [name_m]Aldous[/name_m] or a pet name unrelated to his actual name.

[name_m]Aldous[/name_m] [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] I like, not so sure about the [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] in there? Another combo tossed at me recently was [name_m]Aldous[/name_m] [name_u]Orion[/name_u] [name_u]Zephyr[/name_u], which I quite like!

I don’t define it as stuffy either, and like the pp I think it feels fresh. I came across a little [name_m]Aldous[/name_m] recently and thought the name was great. Very usable.

Oh I love that you recently met a little [name_m]Aldous[/name_m]! Thanks to you both for weighing in

It makes me think of Hideous, sorry  But why not?

[name_m]Aldous[/name_m] [name_u]Orion[/name_u] [name_u]Zephyr[/name_u] is reallu cool!

I think [name_m]Aldous[/name_m] is sweetly serious and dignified

[name_m]Just[/name_m] wondering, I would naturally pronounce it AWL-dus (I’m from the UK) so any [name_m]Al[/name_m] nicknames don’t seem logical to me, how are others pronouncing it?

The rockstar character’s name in the movie Get Him To The Greek (played by [name_m]Russell[/name_m] [name_m]Brand[/name_m]) was [name_m]Aldous[/name_m] [name_f]Snow[/name_f], so that’s my association - not stuffy! I think it’s a cool name.

[name_f]Glad[/name_f] that people are associating it with cool, fresh things  I admit, it’s definitely not going to be everyone’s cup of tea.

@gr19, I’m saying it a little softer, not quite AWL-dus, more like ALL-dus or AHL-dus. It still doesn’t sound like [name_m]Al[/name_m], though. Here in the states I think a lot of people make nicknames based off of the first letters of a name and not always the sound, so they would see [name_m]Aldous[/name_m] and make the nickname [name_m]Al[/name_m], even though they don’t sound alike.

I like it, reminds me of a captain from an alien movie.

Not a fan.

[name_m]Just[/name_m] popping in again… [name_m]Aldous[/name_m] [name_u]Orion[/name_u] [name_u]Zephyr[/name_u] is just brilliant! Also, in regard to pronunciation, I say AHL-dus, with the softer A sound, which I think is nicest.
