Alexandria

Okay, this has long been one of my favourite names, but I’ve spent the last few months poking around the internet and am noticing that it gets very mixed responses. I only found out that there was a city called [name]Alexandria[/name] in the United States about a month ago, although of course I am well acquainted with the one in [name]Egypt[/name].

I love the name [name]Alexandrina[/name], but worry that it sounds a bit over-the-top. It was the first name of [name]Queen[/name] [name]Victoria[/name], but it has fallen out of use since the last century. I also love the name [name]Alexandra[/name], but with [name]Alexandria[/name] and [name]Alexandrina[/name] it seems incomplete. So I would like to know - what is your opinion of [name]Alexandria[/name]?

In my mind, I put [name]Alexandria[/name] in a category with [name]Victoria[/name], [name]Lavinia[/name], [name]Ophelia[/name], [name]Cordelia[/name], and [name]Octavia[/name] - pretty, feminine names that end in -ia. Is this where you would put this name, or do you find it stylistically too different (or, worse, too modern)? What do you think of [name]Alexandria[/name], and the names that you would categorize with it?

Thank you.

i like [name]Alexandria[/name] a lot! So cute!

I get a very strong and royal feel from it. I would categorize it with [name]Victoria[/name], [name]Katharine[/name], [name]Octavia[/name] and [name]Lavinia[/name], all very powerful names in my opinion. [name]Alexandria[/name] is prettier in my ears, not sure I like the -drina sound.

I prefer just [name]Alexandra[/name] but [name]Alexandria[/name] is nice . [name]Alexandrina[/name] is a bit over the top [name]IMO[/name]. I find [name]Alexandra[/name] and [name]Alexandria[/name] to be very powerful and “royal”.

I absolutely love [name]Alexandria[/name]! If I never get to have a boy [name]Alexander[/name], I’ll have an [name]Alexandria[/name]. I think it sounds very royal, like [name]Victoria[/name], [name]Octavia[/name] etc and it has great historical significance.

I like [name]Alexandria[/name] because it happens to be my best friend’s name. I prefer it to [name]Alexandra[/name]. [name]Alexandrina[/name] is a little bit too much and sounds kind of made up [name]IMO[/name].

I love the name [name]Alexandria[/name]. It’s a very strong and stately name.

I definitely get a more modern, less classic vibe from [name]Alexandria[/name] than [name]Alexandra[/name], and I prefer [name]Alexandra[/name], but I have no problem with the -ia.

[name]Alexandria[/name] is a beautiful and regal-sounding name. I like it much better than [name]Alexandrina[/name]. However, I have a preference for the more understated elegance of [name]Alexandra[/name].

I have a younger cousin named, [name]Alexandria[/name]. I just love how spunky, sweet, and loving she is, so I when I see that name I think of her gorgeous smile. However, she goes by [name]Alex[/name], which fits her, because she was a bit tom-boyish when she was younger. The type that liked to climb trees, athletic, and fun to be around, etc. She also has an older sister, who has one of the names you mentioned above. She was the older sister who is adored by her younger siblings (whether they claim to or not, it’s obvious, lol), very intelligent, soft-spoken, bookish, and athletic.

People aren’t particularly well acquainted with Middle Eastern geography and history. To expect the average hearer to know anything about the ancient city of [name]Alexandria[/name] is way too optimistic. Or even [name]Virginia[/name] suburbs. People will think it’s yet another “[name]Alex[/name]” name and not dwell too much on it, even though it has a beautiful sound.

[name]Alexandra[/name] was the royal name of many European houses.

And the French version, [name]Alexandrine[/name], chops off one of the syllables and makes '[name]Alexandrina[/name]" much less fussy.

I love [name]Alexandrine[/name]. It is one I hadn’t even considered. Another good alternative to [name]Alexandrina[/name], and far less overused.

I’m glad to know that you don’t think [name]Alexandria[/name] has overly strong city connotations.

[name]One[/name] of my favourite! I love Alexadria more than [name]Alexandra[/name], or any [name]Alex[/name]- names.
