Alexis for a boy: yay or nay?

I love love love the name [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] for a boy. It doesn’t sound any more inherently feminine to me than, say, [name_m]Julius[/name_m]. But, I think I may just be the right age to have missed out on most of the female Alexises, in that neither my peers nor their children have ever been named [name_u]Alexis[/name_u]. I know of the one on [name_m]Jon[/name_m] and [name_f]Kate[/name_f] plus 8, because I’m classy like that, but that is all. So, I don’t know if I’m just blissfully ignorant about the fact that it is considered a de facto female name now, or if it is truly unisex.

So, from your perspective, is [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] usable as a boys name? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like it? [name_m]Major[/name_m] teasing potential or no?

To me it’s unisex but better on a boy. I grew up with 2- one was my male neighbor (he’s about 34 now) and one my female cousin (age 26). Female [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] lived elsewhere, so male [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] was the only [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] in my neighborhood and schools. He has popular and a jock. He went by [name_u]Alex[/name_u] or [name_u]Lexis[/name_u]. There was no teasing because he was the only [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] most people knew. Also there is [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] Denisof. I was never a [name_f]Buffy[/name_f] fan but it seemed like every other girl around me was so [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] was a masculine, dashing name to them

I also have a cousin named [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] ‘zay-vier’ [name_u]Alexis[/name_u]. He’s a teen so we didn’t grow up together. I’ve never heard anything about teasing but since it’s his mn I doubt if ever comes up

I like [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] for a boy better than for a girl but it works on either gender for me.

I think it’s unisex. I do not know anyone named [name_u]Alexis[/name_u], so the only reference I have is [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] on Castle, who is female. But, I think it could work on a boy; he could always go by [name_u]Alex[/name_u] if he was worried about teasing.

Definitely yay. I love it for a boy.

I’ve only known girls/women named [name_u]Alexis[/name_u], but that could reflect the time when I grew up. I see it as unisex, and fine for a boy – he would likely end up being called [name_u]Alex[/name_u], anyway, which is one of the most unisex names out there.

[name_u]Alexis[/name_u] is definitely usable for a boy! It’s so very refreshing on a boy, on a girl it feels dated.

I like it on a boy. I think I’m a bit too old to have been surrounded by girls of that name (apparently it was top 10 in the late 90s), and I’d love to see it used on more boys.

I have met a ton of girls named [name_u]Alexis[/name_u]. I would love to see it on a boy, because I really am not a fan of it on a girl, but a lot of non-name nerds might only see it as a girls name, but if that doesn’t bother you, go for it. I would prefer [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] or [name_m]Alexei[/name_m], but [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] is perfectly fine for a boy.

In [name_m]French[/name_m], it’s mostly used for boys’ names, so I say go for it! I actually have never met a girl [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] around here, the only girl I know is Alexie

[name_u]Alexis[/name_u] WAS and STILL IS a boys names in some countries (eg. [name_f]Russia[/name_f] has [name_m]Alexei[/name_m]/Alexey) so it would be perfectly acceptable to choose it for a boy. It follows the "boys names ending in “s” trend so it would fit right in. A definite YAY from me!

Another yay here! I have never been able to make up my mind which gender I prefer it for, I’m more used to it as a girl’s name but it was originally a boy’s name so I’d love to see it used for more boys. I think I prefer it pronounced the proper [name_m]French[/name_m] way on a boy though, it seems to always be pronounced [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-LEK-sis for a girl

I think [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] works for either gender. For some reason I’m thinking it’s a boys’ name in Russian? (Could be wrong, so don’t quote me on that.) And [name_u]Alex[/name_u] can be used as a nickname, which is as unisex as names really get. I’ve only ever known one female [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] who’s in university now, and no male ones.

I’ve only ever met girls with the name [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] when I was growing up (in the Mid-Atlantic region). But, I am rather fond of [name_u]Alexi[/name_u]/[name_m]Alexei[/name_m]/Alexey for boys. I think it would be an adorable name.

all the [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] es i know are girls, if i were to see one on a roster or something like that i’d think female

I adore [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] for a boy! Such a strong, distinguished choice and a nice alternative to [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] (which is also terrific).

[name_u]Alexis[/name_u] is firmly no. 227 for boys in the USA (probably thanks to the Hispanic community?), which makes it absolutely usable for a man. Furthermore, [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] is dropping fast in the girls chart.

Where I live it’s a pretty common name among baby girls… so I probably wouldn’t give it to a boy.

I actually prefer [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] on a boy. I think it’s really handsome and I would seriously consider it for a boy had [name_u]Joan[/name_u] [name_u]Collins[/name_u] not ruined it a little for me.

Now that you mention it, [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] could really work for a boy. I might actually prefer it now. There probably wouldn’t be any teasing these days considering other names parents are using, too. So [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] seems like a perfectly usable choice for a boy.

I only know one [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] and he’s male.

He’s a [name_m]French[/name_m] teenager, but he’s male all the same. I like it a lot for a boy, but I’ve never seen much appeal for a girl.

So, Yey!
