Alistair And?

Genre of Story: Fantasy/Adventure

Time Period/Location: Argatha, Atlantis, Avalon, Astolat, Camelot, Ys, Lyonesse, Bjarmaland, Hy-Brasil/Brasil, Brittia, Niflheim, Thule, Annwn, Alfheimr, Svartalfar, Renaissance-like time period

Brief Plot: The story is an expansion of the Arthurian literature. As of now I’m still trying to decide if I want the story to take place in a sort of secluded pocket dimension or to act as if these places simply exist unchanged(I’m leaning towards the latter). A group of people, most of which are based on Arthurian characters, have to come together and reform King Arthur’s round table in order for them to find Yggdrasil, the Holy Grail, and fight Morgana le Fay. While on their adventure they also have to ally themselves with a group of rebels who aim to change the somewhat corrupt government, learn to trust each other, and find mythical islands. The story has a lot of elements from Welsh mythology, Celtic mythology, Norse mythology and Germanic folklore.

Names of Current Characters: Alistair, Ailsa Gallagher, Maren Gallagher

Character 1/Merlin- In my story the Merlin character is a girl. She is the 13 year old little sister of Alistair and Character 2. This character and her brothers were previously 1/2 Japanese and 1/2 Caucasian, but I couldn’t find any evidence that there would’ve been Asian knights at King Arthur’s round table or Asian people living in Europe at that time at all. So now she and her brothers are Caucasian. She has black/brown hair, freckles, and hazel eyes. She’s spunky, strong willed, stubborn, impulsive, & naive. She isn’t exactly the stereotypical “good girl”. She’s not a bad person, but her impulsiveness and stubbornness tend to get her into trouble. She was born in Ys where her parents ran an apothecary, but her family moved to Lyonesse when she was about 7 years old to help her uncle and her grandfather prevent a rival family(actually more like a clan in reality) from claiming their land. Oh, and she’s a wizard/sorcerer/warlock/witch(I’m still researching the differences between the terms), hence her being the Merlin character. For her I was able to come up with the names Leonie, Eulalie, Flannery, Lucille, Oona, Willa, Flora, Louisa, Maude, Eleanor, Josephine, Sylvie, Ellery, Violet, Dinah, Bronwen, Verity, Florence, Clementine, Theodora, June, Jane and Bryony. I’m not sure if any of those names fit her correctly or go well with Alistair. Alistair is the King Arthur character and I recently realized how close Arthur and Alistair sound. I don’t want to get stuck with that pattern, so I’d like for her name not to sound very close to Merlin.

Immediate Family: Alexander(father), unnamed mother, Alistair(older brother), Character 2(oldest brother)

Character 2- Unlike most of the characters he is not based on anyone from Arthurian literature. He is the 18-19 year old brother of Alistair and Character 2. He is one of the leaders in a rebel group that aims to change the government of Camelot and Lyonesse. He is generally charismatic, charming, easily angered, and protective of his family(especially his siblings). He has dark brown hair and dark brown eyes. For him I came up with the names Rufus, Perry, Clive, Edmund, Lemuel, Ronan, Jago, Emrys, Leopold, and Peregrine. Out of those names I think that Edmund, Rufus, Ronan, & Leopold probably fit best with Alistair. It occurred to me that Alistair is a form of their dad’s name Alexander. It seems a little odd to me that the younger son would be named after the dad and the older son’s name would have no connection whatsoever. I was thinking that his name could be his dad’s middle name. Of course, if the PERFECT name for him flows terribly with Alexander I could simply say that it is his grandfather’s name, his grandfather’s middle name, or his great-grandfather’s name.

Immediate Family: Alexander(father), unnamed mother, Alistair(older brother), Character 1(younger sister)

Don’t Suggest These Names: anything that has a relatively short time of usage(as in like 100 years), anything too close to Alistair and Ailsa, anything overly trendy and/or common

I’d really like it if the names of Character 1, Character 2, and Alistair go together as a sibset. I’m open to any suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Could you use the pre-made forms in future? I laid out all the spacing there and seeing a wall of text like this is so daunting to read x_x

Some questions:

  1. You say the story takes place in all those mythological locations… but the dad is Scottish and kids mum is Japanese? I’m confused as to what nations exist/don’t exist in this world.

  2. Where do they live?

  3. What year is this?

The story sort of relies on the hallow earth theory. So the backstory is that a very powerful magician can practically make a place disappear if people forget that it exists or in threat of a war. After the magician casts his spell the place can only be found using portals and the people who live there would go on with their lives as if nothing changed. So all of these mythical places sort of exist within the modern world. To explain it completely I’d basically have to write an entire essay. Their grandparents(on their mom’s side) were two of the last magicians left in the modern world and they found [name_f]Avalon[/name_f] and moved there. I never said that the dad was Scottish. I said that he’s Caucasian. It’s possible that his dad could be Scottish though seeing as knights supposedly came from places like [name_m]Wales[/name_m], Germany, and the Middle [name_f]East[/name_f] to join [name_m]King[/name_m] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]'s round table. So the story takes place in modern times, but where they live it’s closer to the Renaissance era. They live in Ys by the way. I would be happy to revise the post so that it fits the format. But it will probably be a few hours before I can revise the post.

Right. I see. Pocket renaissance universe which is invisible to the modern world. Gotcha.

So Ys appears to be in northern [name_f]France[/name_f]. Perhaps some [name_m]French[/name_m] names might appeal?

Ys would’ve been like the old world equivalent of [name_m]New[/name_m] [name_m]York[/name_m] in its prime. It was supposedly one of the biggest, busiest cities in Europe so, [name_m]Alistair[/name_m]'s siblings don’t have to have [name_m]French[/name_m] names. The names could come from any place.

[name_f]Bridget[/name_f], [name_f]Delia[/name_f], [name_u]Cassidy[/name_u], Lynessa, [name_f]Elise[/name_f]
I like [name_f]Elise[/name_f]…
[name_m]Isaac[/name_m], [name_u]Rowen[/name_u], [name_u]Laine[/name_u]… I’m just not satisfied with these names I’m giving for the boy.

Thewritinggirl, I’m afraid that those names either don’t fit the characters or are too common/plain when compared to [name_m]Alistair[/name_m]. Lynessa is interesting though. It’s not right for [name_m]Merlin[/name_m]/Character 1, but maybe I could use it for another character.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?

What do you think of [name_m]Ronan[/name_m], [name_m]Alistair[/name_m] and [name_f]Oona[/name_f]? They’re all Gaelic, which in my opinion ties them together, and they’re grandmother might be called [name_f]Orla[/name_f]. Their family has a bit of an honor culture, so it would be awesome if maybe [name_f]Orla[/name_f] and [name_f]Oona[/name_f] could share initials. Are they too close, though? [name_f]Orla[/name_f] isn’t a main character(she’s dead to be exact), but they would say her name every now and then. What do you guys think of the sibset [name_m]Ronan[/name_m], [name_m]Alistair[/name_m], and [name_f]Oona[/name_f]?
