  1. I started liking names about age 9 or 10, although it only really became an obsession when I was about 15 or 16.
  2. Not sure exactly why I took an interest in names, I think it was partially due to disliking my own name, and partially due to the size of my family, as there was a new baby being born practically every year in my family and I loved guessing what names they might use.

  5. No, I don’t like it anymore. It’s not soft or feminine enough for my tastes now. Also, in high school I knew a really horrible girl called [name_f]Roxanne[/name_f] and it put me off the name for life.
  6. I wouldn’t say I keep my love of names a secret, but it’s not something that comes up in conversation often. [name_f]My[/name_f] partner knows of my obsession and he thinks it’s funny, but I think he secretly loves discussing names.
  7. I like softer, more feminine names - even for boys. I like names that are pretty, and popular to an extent, but not overused. I’d say my style is classic/timeless but still cute. I don’t really like naming trends.

    I really loved Jordyn and Kyran because those were supposed to be my names if I were a boy. I also liked Emily and my 3 year old self managed to convince my mom to name my unborn sister it. Emily turned out to be a boy. It was of course from the Clifford character.

  1. I first started getting super interested in names around age 7. I would make birth certificates for my teddy bears and I would also memorize name meanings from a baby name book and then name my grandma’s barn cats according to their personalities.

  2. I think I started liking names because I’ve always been a word person and have always been interested in name meanings and what roots they have. I’ve also always been interested in my family roots/ heritage/surnames and the reasoning behind why my parents chose mine and my brothers’ names

  3. I was first interested in biblical names, then Irish names, and then crazy misspellings when I was about 10 haha. I’m so glad I got over that phase. I’ve always loved boys names more than girl names

For boys I like Celtic/English type names like [name_u]Morgan[/name_u], [name_u]Rory[/name_u], [name_m]Callan[/name_m], [name_m]Grant[/name_m] and some lesser used biblical names like [name_m]Ezra[/name_m], [name_m]Isaac[/name_m], [name_m]Jonah[/name_m]. I like names that aren’t super common but not unheard of I guess. I hate boy names on girls, super trendy names, and made up/purposely misspelled names (like when people swap the letter I for a Y or add Ys where they don’t belong Ugh!)

As soon as I could read, so probably around 4 or 5.

I don’t remember exactly, but I loved to write stories. In every story, there was always one page that was a list of every character’s full name, first, middle, and last. When I was a little older, I would go through American Girl magazine issues and write down the first name of everyone who wrote in. I started working on my own name dictionary!

I liked names that were long, feminine, and sounded modern, so I guess that hasn’t changed much! I remember liking names like [name_f]Brianna[/name_f] and [name_f]Arianna[/name_f], and loved [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] but hated [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u].

One of the characters in one of the first stories I wrote was named [name_u]Alexis[/name_u], which I loved at the time. Except I ddin’t know anyone with the name, so I pronounced it [name_m]AL[/name_m]-lex-iss instead of a-[name_u]LEX[/name_u]-iss.

I don’t dislike it, but it’s not high on my list anymore.

[name_f]My[/name_f] family has always known, but I don’t really tell my friends. I don’t think I’ve ever been made fun of for it, but there have been awkward moments when someone borrowed my phone then went snooping through my apps and asked if I was pregnant!

I definitely love sweet, romantic names for girls, and I like traditional names for boys. I don’t love boy names on girls and vice versa, and I don’t like anything rhyming with [name_u]Aiden[/name_u]. I think I’m much pickier about boy names, I tend to lean toward Biblical or historical names.

8) Would you mind if your son/daughter liked names as much as you do when they’re your age that you are now?
I would love it if they did, so I could have someone in real life to talk to about it! :slight_smile:

I’m not sure… it probably started when I was naming my dolls (I was around 5) - I would search for more and more names, name the same doll differently, create a story for certain name character etc. Later on I was just very interested with name meanings, so I bought myself a name book, which book even expanded my passion for names, as I was always creating a lists of my favourites.

I named my first dog [name_f]Pati[/name_f], I was around three years old. Other name I loved for a looooong time was [name_f]Lena[/name_f] - since I was in 5th grade (10 or 11 years old). It was my no#1 for a future daughter.

I didn’t intend to make it a secret, but I don’t think anybody knows the extent to which I am obsessed with names. I like strongly feminine names, but also traditional / classic names, as well as old-fashioned names, eg. from historic novels etc. It’s hard to define our own taste, isn’t it?

PS Since I can remember I was dreaming of how I would name my future daughter(s) - I always had my typos. I also always thought it’s weird because nobody else was doing it or even talking about names, so I learnt not to flaunt with it.

    When I was little I would play house and started liking names a lot, I would constantly write lists of my favorite names. And then when I was in like 4th or 5th grade I was looking up baby names on the computer and I started to play these baby name games on yahoo, and I was obsessed with names since then and then I found name berry and the rest is history. I have pretty much always been writing lists of my favorite names.

I guess it’s part of being a [name_u]Simone[/name_u] - I want my kids to have a name that they could meet someone with.     Not sure. I was very young when I started asking what my name and my siblings names meant, and I’ve been writing down names I heard and liked for so long I can’t remember when it started.

    I think part of it was researching my name, [name_f]Marissa[/name_f], and finding at least 3 different meanings. While doing that, I got side-tracked by other names and the obsession snowballed from there.

    Similar to today, except I didn’t care as much about whether or not the name could actually be pronounced.

I liked the name [name_m]Landon[/name_m] from A Walk to [name_f]Remember[/name_f], and paired it with [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] for a murder mystery I was writing in high school.

I was in grade 7…so 12.

I was just simply curious about the meaning of my own name (and the meaning of my family members’ names). After I found a couple name sites I kind of just got into it. I actually didn’t find Nameberry until maybe about a year after I started becoming name obsessed…ever since Nameberry…I’ve just come to love names more and more :slight_smile:

Mmm…boring 1980s probably? I liked a lot of unisex names too.

Well when I was little I disliked my name (still do now) and announced to my mom I wanted it to be [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Kirstin[/name_f]. It never stuck :stuck_out_tongue: I thought of it probably because my babysitter’s 19 year old daughter, whose name was [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f], was pretty cool and so I wanted to be like her I guess.

I don’t love it like I did when I was 6 but it’s an okay name. I’d rather have it over my real name still.

It was extremely influenced by the people around me- for example, I liked [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] for a while because of a girl I knew named [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]. It was a lot more commonplace than it is now, but more trendy-common than classic-common. [name_f]My[/name_f] style differs ridiculously now.

I like sort of outlandish names- having such a common name myself, I sort of feel as if I owe it to my child to make his or her name unique, at least not like you meet one around every corner. However, my nickname is spelled without correlation to my first name, so its always misspelled or my full name is mistaken for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] instead of [name_u]Madison[/name_u] (which I would honestly prefer) so I make sure to always use the correct spelling of the name.
