All About Your Name Addiction

  1. When did you start loving/liking names? What age?

  2. Why/[name_m]How[/name_m] did you start loving/liking names?

  3. [name_m]How[/name_m] would you describe your taste in names then?

  4. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you remember your first ever name you loved? What was it? [name_m]How[/name_m]'d you come up with it?

  5. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you still like that name?

  6. [name_f]Do[/name_f] your friends/family make fun of you for liking names? Or do you keep it a secret?

  7. [name_m]How[/name_m] would you describe your taste in names today?

  8. Would you mind if your son/daughter liked names as much as you do when they’re your age that you are now?

  9. I first started loving names around 9 years old.

  10. I don’t really know what kickstarted my obsession with names, it just happened.

  11. Crazy and misspelled!

  12. Yes. [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u] [name_m]Rossi[/name_m] (the I was silent). There was a guy I was madly in love with (at the age of 8/9) and I wanted to marry him and have his kids. And his middle name was [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u]. And my dads middle name is [name_m]Ross[/name_m]. And at the age of 8/9 I hated properly spelled names, I had to spell [name_m]Ross[/name_m]; [name_m]Rossi[/name_m].

  13. I still like [name_u]Lawrence[/name_u]. And I like [name_m]Ross[/name_m] (without the silent I) XD

  14. [name_f]My[/name_f] family doesn’t approve of it. But I don’t care. [name_f]My[/name_f] friends like it.

  15. Real names. No misspellings. Usually either old fashion or different cultures (Greek). And less popular (lower than 300)

  16. I would encourage my son/daughter to like names. I mean, it’ll prepare them for a real kid ([name_m]WAY[/name_m] IN THE [name_u]FUTURE[/name_u])

  1. when i was about 9
  2. i hated my name and i loved the way names shaped personalities
  3. weird combinations and unique names
  4. Giannalise was my fave. I combined two random names [name_f]Gianna[/name_f] and [name_f]Annalise[/name_f]. I was going to name my first girl this. Now i hate it!
  5. see #4
  6. my family helps me with my names and my obsession but my friends dont know
  7. vintage and kinda unique
  8. i wouldn’t care if my kid likes them or not… I will encourage them to do what they love, even if it isn’t what i love

1) When did you start loving/liking names? What age? I started liking names around 5th grade (so I was probably 10 or 11).
2) Why/[name_m]How[/name_m] did you start loving/liking names? Not sure how it started. But I can remember saying to myself “I like this name” or “I don’t like that one”
3) [name_m]How[/name_m] would you describe your taste in names then? [name_f]My[/name_f] style then was with the trends. I didn’t know any better.

4) [name_f]Do[/name_f] you remember your first ever name you loved? What was it? [name_m]How[/name_m]'d you come up with it? I can remember liking [name_u]Owen[/name_u] and [name_m]Jason[/name_m] and [name_u]Madison[/name_u] and [name_u]Riley[/name_u]. I’m not sure how I came up with them, I must have known people with those names.
5) [name_f]Do[/name_f] you still like that name? I still love [name_m]Jason[/name_m] and [name_u]Owen[/name_u], but eww [name_u]Madison[/name_u] and [name_u]Riley[/name_u]. What was I thinking?

6) [name_f]Do[/name_f] your friends/family make fun of you for liking names? Or do you keep it a secret? [name_f]My[/name_f] cousin teases me about it a little bit, but she is kind of interested in what are my favorites at the same time. I don’t think my family knows the extent of my obsession. [name_f]My[/name_f] friends like my obsession (I helped name my friend’s dog) and a lot of them are writers (like me) so the naming knowledge comes in handy.
7) [name_m]How[/name_m] would you describe your taste in names today? I think my typical style is sweet and familiar and fun (but not common, names that you recognize but aren’t used to seeing.) but right now I’m going through a classic names phase.
8) Would you mind if your son/daughter liked names as much as you do when they’re your age that you are now?
I wouldn’t mind if my kids liked names as much as I do. I’d encourage them and talk names with them all the time.

  1. When did you start loving/liking names? What age? I’ve liked names since I was a young girl but things didn’t really kick in until I was pregnant.

  2. Why/[name_m]How[/name_m] did you start loving/liking names? I’m not sure what got me liking names when I was a child.

  3. [name_m]How[/name_m] would you describe your taste in names then? I am all over the board.

  4. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you remember your first ever name you loved? What was it? [name_m]How[/name_m]'d you come up with it? [name_m]Timothy[/name_m], especially the nickname [name_m]Timmy[/name_m]. I can not recall what got me liking the name. [name_f]My[/name_f] mom thinks there was a [name_m]Timmy[/name_m] in my preschool or kindergarten.

  5. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you still like that name? I still like [name_m]Timothy[/name_m] “[name_m]Timmy[/name_m]” but not enough to ever use it.

  6. [name_f]Do[/name_f] your friends/family make fun of you for liking names? Or do you keep it a secret? I try not to bother them with it.

  7. [name_m]How[/name_m] would you describe your taste in names today? I am all over the board. I do like having something unexpected in a combo.

  8. Would you mind if your son/daughter liked names as much as you do when they’re your age that you are now? [name_f]My[/name_f] son hates names. I feel badly for his future wife. Hopefully with age, he will start getting interested, at least a little bit.

OMG this is a fun idea! I love looking back down memory lane

1) When did you start loving/liking names? What age?
I was in 5th grade, 10 years old. Although, I’ve always had somewhat of an interest in names and naming my future children. I just acknowledged it in 5th grade.
2) Why/[name_m]How[/name_m] did you start loving/liking names?
I read a book in [name_f]September[/name_f] of that year about a girl who was an aspiring writer. I wanted to be a writer when I grew up at that time (I still do but not as a full-time job). The girl in the book had a name book which helped her decide character names. I thought that was a decent idea. That year (it was 2009) I asked for a name book for [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] and received one. It very quickly became known as my “name Bible”. I used it so often and became so interested in all the things in the book. There was a section giving tips on how to name a baby, lists upon lists of baby names fitting certain themes, popular names throughout the decades, popular names around the world, and over 100,000 boy and girl names. I was hooked. I still have the book, five years later. It’s missing the front and back covers as well as the first two pages in the front (it’s about to lose a third!) and a page in the back. It’s been written in, has pages dog eared that hold names I used to like, and is ripped but I still use it.
3) [name_m]How[/name_m] would you describe your taste in names then?
All over the place! I went through a phase where I liked misspelled names but that wasn’t until 7th grade. You’ll see what I mean by all over the place in the next part.

4) [name_f]Do[/name_f] you remember your first ever name you loved? What was it? [name_m]How[/name_m]'d you come up with it?
[name_f]Theresa[/name_f] Marquette. I, for some reason, loved the name [name_f]Theresa[/name_f]! Marquette is a city in Michigan, where I lived at that time. [name_f]My[/name_f] favorite boy name was [name_u]Cody[/name_u] which probably spawned from my crush on [name_m]Cole[/name_m] Sprouse ([name_u]Cody[/name_u] in the Suite Life of [name_m]Zack[/name_m] and [name_u]Cody[/name_u] on Disney channel) from the year before. I also liked [name_m]Cole[/name_m]. Full name would have been [name_u]Cody[/name_u] [name_u]Michael[/name_u]. I’ve had favorite names every year after I dropped [name_f]Theresa[/name_f] in 7th grade. In 8th grade, I loved the name [name_f]Siddalee[/name_f] [name_f]Hope[/name_f] nn [name_f]Siddie[/name_f] for girls. It was so unique and I loved that. For boys it was [name_u]Hudson[/name_u] [name_m]David[/name_m]. I still like [name_u]Hudson[/name_u] but I hate [name_m]David[/name_m]. A few years ago, it was [name_f]Adalyn[/name_f] [name_f]Faith[/name_f] and [name_u]Carter[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u]. Then I started to like Lila, Violet, Leo, and August. Full names constantly changed. Now, I still like August but the other three have dropped lower on my list, partly because of popularity. My top names are in my signature. It was funny, I looked back in some of my documents earlier this year and found one containing my old favorite names. I used to like McKayden for a girl! Barf!
5) [name_f]Do[/name_f] you still like that name?
No, I grew out of [name_f]Theresa[/name_f] when I discovered the nickname [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] and realized I like that more. The next year there was a weird kid named [name_u]Cody[/name_u] in my grade so I started disliking the name.

6) [name_f]Do[/name_f] your friends/family make fun of you for liking names? Or do you keep it a secret?
[name_f]My[/name_f] parents joke about it sometimes. [name_f]My[/name_f] sisters don’t like it when I talk about names because they think it’s boring but it’s always a real treat when they share new names they like with me. [name_f]My[/name_f] best friend, [name_f]Lauren[/name_f], is super nice and will talk about names with me. We both enjoy writing so it comes in handy if we need help with a character name.
7) [name_m]How[/name_m] would you describe your taste in names today?
I love vintage names such as Iris, August, Mabel, Percy, Felix etc. I also love simple but uncommon girl names such as Thalia, Viola, Kaia, Lucia, Maeve. For boys, I like strong names that are modern but still classy like Archer, Torin, Conrad, Flynn.

8) Would you mind if your son/daughter liked names as much as you do when they’re your age that you are now?
I would be so happy! Someone to talk about names with! I wouldn’t force them into names, how boring would that be if they had no interest whatsoever? But if they do have an interest in names, I would love talking with them!

  1. Around 8, I only started my proper list last year though.
  2. Not sure, I think I just needed names for my imaginary kids.
  3. I don’t know. Similar to now. Some classics, and mythological.
  4. I used to imagine getting married to and having kids with the [name_m]Doctor[/name_m] ([name_m]David[/name_m] Tennant at the time), so my first favourite boys name was [name_m]Alonzo[/name_m]. And there was a girl who went to my music group called [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] (who reminded me of my cousin), and I loved her name. [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] and [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] [name_f]Breanne[/name_f] nn [name_u]Rory[/name_u], were also results of my imagination ([name_m]Matt[/name_m] [name_m]Smith[/name_m]'s incarnation this time). I liked [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_u]Orion[/name_u] for a boy, by then, because of a story with a phoenix (The [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] and the Carpet), and [name_u]Orion[/name_u]'s link with the stars.
  5. [name_m]Both[/name_m] [name_m]Alonzo[/name_m] (recent addition), [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] and [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] (two of the firsts) are on my list. [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] is my second favourite boys name now, and [name_u]Orion[/name_u] was one of the first boys names.
  6. Most of my friends actually think it’s cool. Not going to start on family for a while, it’d just be awkward.
  7. Quite unusual, I try to stay away from popular. I like older/vintage/classic names, and, most of my names seem to have European origins. I like a lot of mythological names and all my absolute favourite names feel magical or historical, and adventurous.
  8. I’d love it if my son or daughter liked names as much as I do! I wish I had someone now I could talk to about names (family-wise), without it seeming weird.

1.) 2002 when I was 10 years old
2.) My aunt was pregnant in 2002 w/ her first child and my whole family hated the name she had picked out for him. My mom asked if I would like to make a list of names I liked to send to her, so maybe she would change her mind (my mom bought me a baby name book to help me make the list). I had SO much fun making that list. I loved reading about them and learning where they came from. Guess what? My aunt chose a name for BOTH of her kids from my list!
3.) Names you would consider trendy
4.) For YEARS I was convinced I was going to have a daughter named Alana and a son named Noah. I found them in the baby name book my mom got me.
5.) Yes, I still like them, but they’re not my absolute favorites anymore
6.) No one has made fun of me for being interested in names. My mom and I talk about names a lot (mainly celebrity baby names). It wasn’t til recently that my mom blabbed to my grandparents and aunt and uncle that I like making name lists. It was a little embarrassing, but no one seemed to think it was weird. Turns out my aunt is interested in names too!
7.) For boys I like more traditional and classic names. Very few names in my boys list is “out there.” For girls my style is all over the place. From trendy to very unusual.
8.) I wouldn’t mind if my kids were interested in names. I find researching names quite fascinating!

  9. In fourth grade, my aunt got pregnant. That was when I became aware of names and feelings about them. The names I grew to like and dislike mostly revolved around people who generated strong feelings from me (a few characters from books, but it was mostly through kids at school). I had crushes on a [name_m]Kevin[/name_m] and [name_m]Justin[/name_m] and [name_u]Chris[/name_u], so I liked their names. I hated an [name_m]Aaron[/name_m], [name_f]Melissa[/name_f], and [name_f]Bridget[/name_f], so I likewise hated their names. However, my deeper love of names developed when I was 15ish when…

  10. …I got my first kitten, and I wanted her to have a “real” name. We’d had cats my entire life, but she was mine, which meant I got to name her whatever I (and I alone) wanted. It took months to name her. For short periods of time she was [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], or [name_f]Jemima[/name_f], or [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], or half a dozen others. Eventually I named her [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], after [name_f]My[/name_f] Fair Lady. In the meantime, though, my cousin called the cat [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] until she had a real name. So she was [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]. :stuck_out_tongue:

  11. I’ve always preferred classic names - regal and timeless.

  12. I’ll split this into two phases. During Phase 1, when my aunt announced she was pregnant, I remember loving Jennifer. I prayed and prayed she wouldn’t name her daughter Jennifer. I don’t even know where it came from, because I don’t remember a character or classmate named this. It may have even been a name I got from my aunt while she was throwing names around with my mom, I have no idea. Well, guess what? She named her daughter Jennifer! I felt so betrayed. :stuck_out_tongue: That was when I learned my “first come first serve” lesson on names. In Phase 2, which was when I was 15 and discovered the greater world of baby name forums and books, I fell for [name_m]Phillip[/name_m]. I knew even then that I didn’t want to name my child [name_m]Phillip[/name_m] because the nn [name_u]Phil[/name_u] is so unfortunate. Instead, I named everything else [name_m]Phillip[/name_m]. [name_f]My[/name_f] car is named [name_m]Phillip[/name_m], for instance. When it came to what to name a person, my first and only love for years was [name_m]Henry[/name_m]. As for girls, I looooved [name_f]Elaina[/name_f]. I made it up be because I loved the sound, and I was really happy when I found out that it was an established name.

  13. Aside from the awful dated Jennifer, I love my Phase 2 names. In fact, Henry will be the name of our first son. My love for it is so longstanding that I didn’t even give my husband a choice - I told him that the first baby boy that comes out of me will be named Henry, and he could name the second whatever he wanted (within reason). :stuck_out_tongue: As for Elaina, there is a part of me that still prefers this spelling, since it was my first love, but I’ve opted for [name_f]Elena[/name_f] since it’s the standard version. I still love the sound, and I like that it is a variant of Helen, which was my amazingly strong grandmother’s name. Sidenote: This was the first name I ever told to my husband on our first “name talk”, and he fell totally and completely in love. This will be our first daughter. (I thought that I lucked out since he seemed so excited about my top name for both girls and boys, but we haven’t agreed on anything since that first talk. LOL.)

  14. I keep it more of a secret (though I’ve never been teased or anything for it by the select few that know) just because I know that none of my friends/other family would understand why I want to make beautiful name combinations for funsies. My husband actually thinks it’s kind of odd since we aren’t even TTC yet. Something about “saving the fun for later”. Nah.

  15. My tastes are the same. In fact, most of the combinations I love today were created when I was 15 and enjoying my first dip into the naming pool.

  16. I don’t have any burning desire for a child to share this passion. I want them to do them, whatever hobbies they feel called to. If, however, they did like names, I would be happy. Mainly because it would show that they understand that there is a responsibility in naming a person. It would hopefully mean that they would put more thought than “I like this, let’s just call her this” and then I end up with a Maddeyleigh Raygan as a granddaughter. :stuck_out_tongue:

  1. I was 14 years old.

  2. [name_f]My[/name_f] oldest brother [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u] who was 29 at the time was having his first kid and the family went into a name finding friendly. I went and bought a baby naming book with my allowance and spent three nights straight reading the whole thing. (He ended up naming him [name_m]Jefferson[/name_m] [name_u]Roscoe[/name_u]…he goes by [name_m]JR[/name_m] for short)

  3. Back then I lived in [name_f]Alabama[/name_f] right up next to Mississippi so I was into deep rooted family names and the hybrid cow boyish-Southern gentlemen names I was surrounded by. ([name_u]Monroe[/name_u], [name_m]Rhett[/name_m], [name_m]Rivers[/name_m], [name_m]Jefferson[/name_m], [name_m]Jedediah[/name_m])

  4. The very first name I ever fell in love in love with was [name_m]Russ[/name_m]. It was the name of my grandpa’s hunting dog who was my very best friend until he was put down hill I was in the fifth grade. I was convinced I would name my child after that dog.

  5. Yes. I adore the name! But instead of naming my child after it, I have a big 'ol bloodhound, the mirror image of the original, named [name_m]Russ[/name_m] Boonedocks [name_m]Junior[/name_m].

  6. [name_f]My[/name_f] brothers give me a little crap about it, but then again that’s what brothers do. At the end of the day they all come flocking to me when they need names for their latest child. (With 8 brothers I’ve got 22 nieces and nephews and counting…THE [name_m]SCOTT[/name_m] NAME LIVES ON!!! lol)

  7. [name_f]My[/name_f] name taste is pretty much the same… just look at my kids’ names: [name_u]Whitney[/name_u] [name_m]Levi[/name_m], [name_m]Knox[/name_m] [name_m]Rivers[/name_m], and [name_m]Wayland[/name_m] [name_m]Luke[/name_m]

  8. I wouldn’t mind at all, but I would find it kinda weird. No offense to all the men Berries out there, but I find that name obsessing is mostly a girly thing and as of now I only have boys.

  1. I started liking names around 8 or 9.

  2. [name_f]My[/name_f] friend’s mom was about to have twins, and she hated the names they were going to be given. We did a ton of investigating for better names that her parents could pick, and learning about all the names just kind of stuck with me. (We succeeded in getting the heinous names moved to the twins’ middles because we found names her parents ended up liking better.)

  3. I think I’ve always liked more classic names.

  4. One of my mother’s friends had a daughter named [name_f]Laura[/name_f] who was six or seven years older than me, and I thought she was so pretty. She was the only [name_f]Laura[/name_f] I knew, so I just figured that everyone with that name was pretty like her.

  5. It’s alright, but I prefer [name_f]Lauren[/name_f] or [name_f]Laurel[/name_f].

  6. I don’t necessarily keep it a secret, I just don’t think it’s ever really come up. I’ll express my opinion to them on names though, like if we’re out somewhere and a mother calls to her kid, I’ll most likely say something about the name, but I don’t think they really notice or think it’s weird or anything. Mostly, they do the same.

  7. Still more classic names, but I’m way more likely to branch out now than I was then.

  8. I think would love it! I’d be interested to see what they thought of names that I liked/didn’t like. [name_f]My[/name_f] mom is kind of a name nerd, and sometimes we have conversations about stuff that she wanted to name me but that my dad didn’t like (or the other way around). It’s cool to share interests with your parents, but I can’t say I would be devastated if my kids didn’t like names.

  1. When did you start loving/liking names? What age?

I’m not sure when it started. I always loved names!

  1. Why/[name_m]How[/name_m] did you start loving/liking names?

I started loving names when I realized I was the only girl I knew who gave their [name_f]Barbie[/name_f] dolls first, middle, AND last names! I always loved naming things, and when I discovered the game The Sims when I was in 5th grade, I made my sim families huge, so I could keep on giving out names to everyone.

  1. [name_m]How[/name_m] would you describe your taste in names then?

When I was younger, I really liked names that were popular in the 80s and 90s. Growing up in the early 2000s, all my baby sitters were named [name_f]Brittney[/name_f], [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f], [name_f]Kimmy[/name_f], [name_u]Hillary[/name_u], and so on. Now, I’m really into more vintage names like [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Juliette[/name_f], [name_f]Mae[/name_f], [name_f]Vera[/name_f], and so on.

  1. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you remember your first ever name you loved? What was it? [name_m]How[/name_m]'d you come up with it?

I loved [name_u]Kimberly[/name_u], [name_u]Hillary[/name_u], [name_f]Brittney[/name_f], [name_f]Tiffany[/name_f], [name_u]Ashley[/name_u], [name_f]Miranda[/name_f], and [name_u]Lindsey[/name_u] when I was really little. Some were based off of Celebrities I liked ([name_f]Brittney[/name_f] Spears, [name_u]Hillary[/name_u] [name_u]Duff[/name_u]), but most were the names of my favorite baby sitters, like [name_u]Lindsey[/name_u] and [name_u]Kimberly[/name_u] (who we called [name_f]Kimmy[/name_f]). But when I was around 8, I fell in love with the name [name_f]Gwen[/name_f], because of the character on the TV show Total [name_u]Drama[/name_u] Island : )

  1. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you still like that name?
I don’t really like those 80s and 90s names anymore. I still kind of like [name_f]Tiffany[/name_f], because of the jewelery store and Breakfast at [name_f]Tiffany[/name_f]'s. But I still love [name_f]Gwen[/name_f].

  2. [name_f]Do[/name_f] your friends/family make fun of you for liking names? Or do you keep it a secret?

[name_f]My[/name_f] sisters think it’s so weird that I love names, along with a couple of my friends. [name_f]My[/name_f] Dad doesn’t really care though. But my mom and one of my best friends also are addicted to names! [name_f]My[/name_f] mom tells me all of the names she wanted to name me and my two sisters (she liked [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], [name_f]Hanna[/name_f], [name_f]Susannah[/name_f], [name_f]Isla[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f], and [name_f]Michaela[/name_f]). [name_f]My[/name_f] best friend and I love talking about names we want to name our future children. She loves names with meaning, while I love names with elegance.

  1. [name_m]How[/name_m] would you describe your taste in names today?

Like I said, I like classic vintage names a lot on girls. As for boys, I like surnames as first names on them. I’d like a son named [name_u]Bentley[/name_u] or [name_u]Fallon[/name_u] : ). I’m also really into Welsh, Irish, and Celtic names for some reason!

  1. Would you mind if your son/daughter liked names as much as you do when they’re your age that you are now?

I wouldn’t mind. I’d like them to respect names, so that when they’re older, they give names that they love, and not just throw a random name from the Top 10 names list onto their child.

  1. When did you start loving/liking names? What age? I’ve enjoyed names/naming for as long as I can remember, actually.

  2. Why/[name_m]How[/name_m] did you start loving/liking names? Naming my baby dolls, I think.

  3. [name_m]How[/name_m] would you describe your taste in names then? I’d say it was about 1999 when I started really naming things legitimate names. [name_f]My[/name_f] favorites were [name_f]Brittany[/name_f], [name_f]Michelle[/name_f] and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. However, [name_f]Brittany[/name_f] was because I loved my cousin [name_f]Brittany[/name_f] and [name_f]Michelle[/name_f] was because I loved my middle name, so [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is the only one I really “came up with.” Traditional, I suppose.

  4. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you remember your first ever name you loved? What was it? [name_m]How[/name_m]'d you come up with it? [name_f]Brittany[/name_f], due to that cousin I mentioned.

  5. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you still like that name? Not particularly. I still like [name_f]Michelle[/name_f] and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] though.

  6. [name_f]Do[/name_f] your friends/family make fun of you for liking names? Or do you keep it a secret? No. [name_f]My[/name_f] mom and I name everything. [name_f]My[/name_f] car is [name_m]Louie[/name_m], hers is [name_f]Barbie[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] coffeemaker is [name_m]Pierre[/name_m], hers is [name_m]Henry[/name_m].

  7. [name_m]How[/name_m] would you describe your taste in names today? I charming vintage names for gals and quirkier, semi-traditional names for gents.

  8. Would you mind if your son/daughter liked names as much as you do when they’re your age that you are now? No? It’s just an interest. Plus, I’m an adult, so. . .

1) When did you start loving/liking names? What age?
I’m not really sure, but I was around 9 or 10 when I started making name lists

2) Why/[name_m]How[/name_m] did you start loving/liking names?
Again not sure! Maybe because my siblings and I had such unusual names? ([name_f]Jemima[/name_f] (me), Gret3l and B@rnaby)

3) [name_m]How[/name_m] would you describe your taste in names then?
Hmmm. [name_f]My[/name_f] taste varied wildly. A lot of the time it was character names in books that I loved (e.g. [name_f]Heidi[/name_f] and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] were long-time favourites).

4) [name_f]Do[/name_f] you remember your first ever name you loved? What was it? [name_m]How[/name_m]'d you come up with it?
Probably [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. When I was six I named my baby doll [name_f]Penelope[/name_f].

5) [name_f]Do[/name_f] you still like that name?
It’s one of my favourites. I hate how popular it’s become, though.

6) [name_f]Do[/name_f] your friends/family make fun of you for liking names? Or do you keep it a secret?
I’m mostly pretty quiet about it, but I am definitely known in my family for saying, “What do you think of [name]? Do you like it?” I do get made fun of for it :stuck_out_tongue:

7) [name_m]How[/name_m] would you describe your taste in names today?
Quirky, uncommon, British, old-fashioned.

8) Would you mind if your son/daughter liked names as much as you do when they’re your age that you are now?
I think I’d love it  [name_f]My[/name_f] naming days would be over and I would love to chat about names still! I just hope they like their own names!

  1. I started really getting into names properly about 2 or 3 years ago when I was 18/19

  2. I got into them because found a youtube channel all about baby names and loved it

  3. I didn’t really have a taste at the time - I was sorta trying to figure out what I liked at the tine

  4. The first name I ever loved was [name_f]Elodie[/name_f] because I saw it in a [name_m]French[/name_m] text book at school, I think I was about 14 or 15

  5. I do still like it, but I don’t think I’d ever use it.

  6. I don’t really tell my family and friends about my love for names. I don’t intentionally keep it a secret, it’s just not a big deal to me or something I feel the need to talk about. I do however actively not talk about it around my boyfriend because it’d freak him out BIG TIME!

  7. For girls, my taste a little classic, vintage but not too common. For boys, I really don’t have a specific taste. I tend to just like random ones.

  8. I wouldn’t mind if my kids liked names at the age I am now, since I’m a grown adult.

1) When did you start loving/liking names? What age?
From as young as I can remember (see following answer). But the first time I loved a name and started to take it seriously, I would have been about 8.

2) Why/[name_m]How[/name_m] did you start loving/liking names?
I don’t have a middle name, and my mum always says that when I was little, I used to get her to read baby books to me so I could pick names for myself. [name_f]My[/name_f] brother is a few years younger than me, and although I am too young to remember this, apparently when he was born, I would only call him [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] because I thought it was better than [name_m]Nathan[/name_m]. Anyway, my sister and I still call him [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] as a pet name :stuck_out_tongue:

3) [name_m]How[/name_m] would you describe your taste in names then?
Well I’m not exactly sure how to describe my taste in names, even now, but I’d say probably more classic.

4) [name_f]Do[/name_f] you remember your first ever name you loved? What was it? [name_m]How[/name_m]'d you come up with it?
Yes. I started loving [name_u]Austen[/name_u] for a boy and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] for a girl at the same time, I was 8 years old. [name_f]My[/name_f] Mum is a massive [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Austen[/name_u] fan, and would always read the books, and watch the movies, and I remember that when I was 8 Mum finally let me watch [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Austen[/name_u] with her. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_m]Bennett[/name_m] straight away was my hero, but there was so many incredible male characters. So [name_u]Austen[/name_u] was my name for all the [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Austen[/name_u] men.

5) [name_f]Do[/name_f] you still like that name?
Yes, I adore [name_u]Austen[/name_u]. It’s my number one boy name. Not only because of the homage to [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Austen[/name_u], or the memories I share with my Mum with this name, but I also love the history behind the name. It’s derived for [name_m]Augustus[/name_m]/[name_m]Augusten[/name_m], and my husband and I met in [name_u]August[/name_u], which makes the name extra special.
I still love [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] too (and it’s also my Mum’s name), but no name is as special to me as [name_u]Austen[/name_u] is.

6) [name_f]Do[/name_f] your friends/family make fun of you for liking names? Or do you keep it a secret?
Some people definitely think it’s strange, like my older sister. [name_f]My[/name_f] younger sister who’s 11 loves names too, so we always compare names, and usually end up fighting over names because we have the same taste!

7) [name_m]How[/name_m] would you describe your taste in names today?
I’d say my taste hasn’t changed much or at all. I definitely like classic names with a rich history, [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] etc, and more uncommon Biblical names like [name_m]Hezekiah[/name_m] and [name_u]Elisha[/name_u] too.

8) Would you mind if your son/daughter liked names as much as you do when they’re your age that you are now?
Absolutely not. I’m almost 23. Plus my husband (thanks to me), loves names now too, and even has a nameberry account, so our kids will have to like names just to fit in :stuck_out_tongue:
In all seriousness, it’s a great hobby. I don’t know why anyone would mind.

Great post!

  1. I started liking names around age 8 or 9, but last year is when I really fell in love with names (aged 14)

  2. I started loving names because I really disliked mine. I really wanted a pretty flower name. I also obsessed over names of characters in books and TV shows. [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] was always special to me because of the book, and [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] and [name_f]Clara[/name_f] are two favourites of mine which I fell in love with because of [name_m]Doctor[/name_m] Who

  3. I liked pretty and feminine names

  4. I liked girly-girl names like [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] and [name_f]Emily[/name_f], which were all extremely popular

  5. Not really. I would never use them as they are too common where I live. I think they are sweet, but nms anymore

  6. I keep it a secret, although if anyone starts talking about names, I won’t stop! I think my parents would think it was weird, so I haven’t told anyone

  7. I prefer more unusual classical or vintage names

  8. I would love to discuss names with a future son/daughter, but if they are not interested in names then that’s fine too

1) When did you start loving/liking names? What age? about 4 or 5
2) Why/[name_m]How[/name_m] did you start loving/liking names? I met a girl called [name_f]Ava[/name_f]
3) [name_m]How[/name_m] would you describe your taste in names then? Mostly crazy, wacky and misspelled
4) [name_f]Do[/name_f] you remember your first ever name you loved? What was it? [name_m]How[/name_m]'d you come up with it? [name_f]Ava[/name_f], I just loved it’s beauty and simplicity and it made me fascinated by names
5) [name_f]Do[/name_f] you still like that name? definitely, I don’t love it’s popularity though!
6) [name_f]Do[/name_f] your friends/family make fun of you for liking names? Or do you keep it a secret? I haven’t told them. They would think I’m crazy and be paranoid about me getting pregnant
7) [name_m]How[/name_m] would you describe your taste in names today? I don’t know, I prefer unusual names (not top 100, preferably not top 500), Celtic, Greek, lots of things really. But 100% not incorrectly spelt, boys’ names on girls, surname names or trendy names
8) Would you mind if your son/daughter liked names as much as you do when they’re your age that you are now? I think it’d be great

  1. I started liking names around age 5

  2. I loved playing with toys and dolls and one of my favorite parts of getting a new toy was naming it.

  3. When I was five I guess it was very dated, since the people around me had very dated 80’s/90’s names even though back then they weren’t considered dated. So I guess you could call it trendy

  4. The first name I ever loved was [name_f]Fiona[/name_f]. It was the name of the main character on my favorite T.V show (So Weird) and I remember absolutely loving the sound of it and I called all my dolls [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] for a while.

  5. Kind of. I do like [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] but its not something I’m crazy about anymore or that I could picture using.

  6. I keep it mostly a secret from my friends and family. [name_f]My[/name_f] sister has discovered it though just from spying and she does tease me from time to time but only when she catches me looking at names. I don’t like to tell people about it because I worried they’ll think I’m planning a baby at the age of 19! I think my sister thinks I am and thats why she spies on me.

  7. Classic to classic unusual. I love names like [name_m]Jack[/name_m], [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_f]Anna[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]. But I also like names like [name_u]August[/name_u], [name_u]Everett[/name_u], [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] & [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f].

  8. Not at all. I understand the attraction so I think it’d be cool. No pressure though.

Fun post! [name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_f]Jocelyn[/name_f] by the way, I’m 22 now and new to Nameberry, but I’ve been posting on baby name forums since I was 14.

1) When did you start loving/liking names? What age? For as long as I can remember, I’ve always had a favorite name picked out. [name_f]My[/name_f] first one was [name_f]Maya[/name_f], when I was about 5-6, and I didn’t even know anyone named [name_f]Maya[/name_f]. Real addiction kicked off when I got my mom to buy me a baby name pamphlet in the grocery store checkout line when I was 10.
2) Why/[name_m]How[/name_m] did you start loving/liking names? I don’t even know, I think it’s similar to my love for languages though. I also tend to associate feelings/moods very strongly with the “textures” of sounds/words/names… that’s a little hard to explain, but it makes names really interesting for me.
3) [name_m]How[/name_m] would you describe your taste in names then? As a little kid? I only thought about girl names until I was probably 13, but I liked girl names that were pretty, feminine, girly-sounding. I never liked really common ones.

4) [name_f]Do[/name_f] you remember your first ever name you loved? What was it? [name_m]How[/name_m]'d you come up with it? I liked [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] when I was very little because I had an older friend named [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], but I say my first favorite was [name_f]Maya[/name_f] (age 5-6) because I liked it even though I didn’t know anyone with that name. It was my favorite for a couple years probably. [name_f]My[/name_f] first serious name love was [name_f]Ananda[/name_f], which I found in aforementioned grocery store pamphlet (age 10).
5) [name_f]Do[/name_f] you still like that name? I like [name_f]Maya[/name_f] okay, but I definitely wouldn’t us it. [name_f]Ananda[/name_f] stayed on my list until I was 16 or 17, sometimes it still shows up there but I think I’d be more likely to use it for a pet now.

6) [name_f]Do[/name_f] your friends/family make fun of you for liking names? Or do you keep it a secret? Only my sister knows, and she makes fun of me for it. But I also know she has her own list, and she’s shared it with me when I bug her enough. :stuck_out_tongue:
7) [name_m]How[/name_m] would you describe your taste in names today? I like names that have history. I would say earthy - I like a lot of nature names, but also names that have an earthy, grounded feel to them. Quirky, sprinkling of foreign, often leaning towards moldy-oldy.

8) Would you mind if your son/daughter liked names as much as you do when they’re your age that you are now? I would think it was awesome. I’d probably bug them to discuss combos with me.

  1. When did you start loving/liking names? What age?
[b] I remember having a chat with my friend on school lunch break about what we’d name our future children. She loved the name [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] - it was then that I realized she had first dibs on [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], and it would be rude to steal the name! We were about 8!

I loved naming my dolls and pets also. Our first cat was named [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] Garden.[/b]

  1. Why/[name_m]How[/name_m] did you start loving/liking names?
I loved hearing about how my parents named me. They named me after a cute young boy (family friend’s son) but gave me the feminine version. What was most special to me was my middle name [name_f]Kathleen[/name_f]. I know it’s old-lady-ish, but I love how I share it with both my Grandma’s, my sister & 2 Aunties.

I’ve always thought it was odd that my baby brother was nameless for 2 days because my parents couldn’t decide between [name_m]Steven[/name_m] and [name_m]Jackson[/name_m]. (They went with [name_m]Steven[/name_m] as they didn’t want him to endure the nn ‘wacko-[name_m]Jacko[/name_m]’ LOL)

  1. [name_m]How[/name_m] would you describe your taste in names then?
I used to like trendy names, or names that just ‘sounded good’. Now the meaning behind the name is SO much more important. I like family names, classic, vintage, Greek, Celtic and Welsh… And more

  2. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you remember your first ever name you loved? What was it? [name_m]How[/name_m]'d you come up with it?
I heard someone yell out to a girl called [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] in the playground, I must’ve been 9 or 10. I thought [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] was the most beautiful name - it’s so popular now! [name_f]My[/name_f] other favorites at school: [name_u]Alexis[/name_u], [name_f]Calista[/name_f], [name_u]Shea[/name_u] and [name_f]Crystal[/name_f].

[name_f]My[/name_f] other favorite names are from story books my parents used to read me: [name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] ‘[name_m]Clifford[/name_m] (the big red dog)’; [name_f]Alice[/name_f] ‘[name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland’; [name_f]Bessie[/name_f]/[name_f]Beth[/name_f] ‘The Enchanted [name_m]Wood[/name_m]’

  1. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you still like that name?
I still love all of these names. [name_f]Happy[/name_f] memories from my childhood I guess.

  2. [name_f]Do[/name_f] your friends/family make fun of you for liking names? Or do you keep it a secret?
I love talking about names, but I don’t want people to know how obsessed I actually am! [name_f]My[/name_f] husband thinks it’s weird! Haha!

  3. [name_m]How[/name_m] would you describe your taste in names today?
    (Answered this at question 3)

  4. Would you mind if your son/daughter liked names as much as you do when they’re your age that you are now?
Yeah sure, I’d love it if they were interested in names also!
