All about your names!

Thank you for the love, @leafsgirl44, @baya44, and @missniwalyra!

CATEGORY 1: YOUR LIST

1. What is your favorite girl’s name?
[name_f]Isobel[/name_f]
2. What is your favorite boy’s name?
Lately, [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], but it’s been favorite by committee since [name_m]Caleb[/name_m] fell out of favor for me… on any given day it could be [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], [name_m]Caspar[/name_m], [name_u]Avery[/name_u], [name_m]Boaz[/name_m], or [name_u]Aquila[/name_u].
3. What is the longest name/combo on your list?
Longest combo is tied between [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] [name_u]Louise[/name_u], [name_f]Claire[/name_f] [name_f]Tirzah[/name_f] [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f], and [name_f]Zoe[/name_f] [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f] [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] (21 letters each).
4. What is the shortest name/combo on your list?
[name_u]Tali[/name_u] [name_f]Eliora[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f] and [name_u]Avery[/name_u] [name_m]Ian[/name_m] [name_u]George[/name_u] tie for shortest (14 letters each).
5. Tell me the story behind a favorite name of yours.
[name_f]Isobel[/name_f]. I was dreadfully depressed from about 2007 through 2014, suicidal at points (<-hiding for potential triggers->), and completely hopeless. At that point, television shows were the only thing that made me feel semi alive. I had really gotten hooked on the TV show Alias, and when [name_u]Michael[/name_u] and [name_u]Sydney[/name_u] were naming their baby and decided on [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], I was completely gobsmacked by how lovely she was. I’d loved [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] for a while, and had even come across [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] in other stories, etc., but it never clicked like it did when I saw watching that show. In the midst of a lot of despair, [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] was this lovely, shimmering, hopeful thing that completely took my breath away. She was lots of hope in the midst of a very dark time, and, consequently, my first real association to my synesthesia when it comes to names. She was like the purest, clearest creek with twinkling gems of every color–green and pink and blue and purple and yellow–covering the creek bed and just twinkling in the warmth of the sun. The meaning of the name, “[name_f]My[/name_f] God is a vow,” plus her absolute loveliness was a vow from God to me in a time when I was without hope that there WOULD be hope, and beauty, and that He was still with me. I’ve since switched from [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] to the Scottish [name_f]Isobel[/name_f], but [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] has that same loveliness and the same promise from my God with this beautiful visions of the [name_f]Fairy[/name_f] Pools and fields of heather and rugged highlands and crumbling castles and cathedrals.
6. What is the newest name/combo on your list?
Newest names to my list are [name_f]Eilidh[/name_f] and [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m]. Newest full combo is [name_u]Orion[/name_u] [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m] [name_m]Jack[/name_m]. Newest partial combo is [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] Greystoke. [name_f]Eilidh[/name_f] [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] has been on my radar for forever, so I don’t really count her as the newest combo, and I don’t have anything for [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] yet.
7. What is the oldest name/combo on your list?
Probably [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]/Isobel [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] has been on my radar for nearly a decade now. [name_u]Avery[/name_u] [name_m]Ian[/name_m] [name_u]George[/name_u] has been around for nearly as long though!
8. What is the most underrated name on your list? (In your opinion!)
Oh, goodness, I feel like I have a lot of these. [name_m]Boaz[/name_m] (although pretty popular on here, much less so in real life!), [name_u]Aquila[/name_u], [name_m]Bartholomew[/name_m], [name_m]Reef[/name_m], [name_m]Lorcan[/name_m], [name_m]Barnabas[/name_m], [name_f]Tirzah[/name_f], [name_f]Eilidh[/name_f], etc. Maybe [name_m]Lorcan[/name_m], though… I hardly ever hear him, and he has SUCH a lovely name and is so usable… why is [name_m]Lorcan[/name_m] so rare???
9. What is the most unique name on your list?
Uhh, I have quite a few outside the top 1000; not sure which has the least uses, but these are all the FNs not on the top 1000: [name_f]Isobel[/name_f], [name_f]Eilidh[/name_f], [name_f]Tirzah[/name_f], [name_f]Eleni[/name_f], [name_u]Tali[/name_u], [name_m]Caspar[/name_m], [name_m]Boaz[/name_m], [name_u]Aquila[/name_u], [name_m]Bartholomew[/name_m], [name_m]Lorcan[/name_m], [name_m]Reef[/name_m], [name_m]Barnabas[/name_m], [name_m]Eoghan[/name_m], [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m].
10. What is the most common/popular name on your list?
[name_m]Jack[/name_m] (19), but [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] (22), [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] (27), and [name_f]Violet[/name_f] (36) aren’t far behind!
11. If you had to let go of a name on your list, which name would it be?
I keep a top 20 for each gender so probably will end up letting go a lot of them, haha, but the easiest to go would probably be [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] or [name_m]Peter[/name_m] for a boy, [name_f]Eilidh[/name_f] or [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] for a girl. Today anyway.
12. What name on your list did you fall in love with at first sight?
Does [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] count? lol. Most took a while to develop, but [name_f]Tirzah[/name_f], [name_f]Isobel[/name_f], [name_f]Claire[/name_f], [name_u]Aquila[/name_u], and [name_m]Reef[/name_m] were pretty much instantaneous loves.

CATEGORY 2: THEMED NAMES

13. What is your favorite trendy name?
[name_u]Everly[/name_u] for sure.
14. What is your ultimate GP name?
I can never think of GPs when I need to! lol. Probably [name_u]Brady[/name_u] for a girl. ducks & hides
15. What is your favorite floral name?
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f], [name_f]Liliana[/name_f], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], and [name_f]Violet[/name_f] are all on my list, so I guess it’s a toss-up? [name_f]Violet[/name_f] technically ranks highest on my list right now, but I could see [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] taking her pace, if I didn’t love [name_f]Lottie[/name_f] so much as a nn for [name_f]Violet[/name_f].
16. What is your favorite word name? (non-floral)
Does it count if it’s a word name in another language? Because if so, [name_f]Lærke[/name_f] 1000000%. Honors so many family members and it’s such a lilting, soft, unexpectedly beautiful name. [name_f]English[/name_f] word name, probably [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] or [name_m]Reef[/name_m]. [name_u]Grey[/name_u], [name_u]Fife[/name_u], and [name_f]Grace[/name_f] are also on my list… I’m not a huge word name person.
17. What is your favorite space-themed name?
[name_f]Cosima[/name_f]!!! [name_u]Orion[/name_u] for a boy. I also like [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] a lot.
18. What is your favorite month or week name? (e.g. July, Friday)
[name_u]Day[/name_u] name would be [name_f]Sunday[/name_f], for the reminder of what happened on [name_f]Easter[/name_f] [name_f]Sunday[/name_f]. I am partial to [name_u]March[/name_u] because it’s my birth month, but [name_u]June[/name_u] is also growing on me and I like [name_f]Mae[/name_f] for my grandmother. I have a weird affinity to [name_u]January[/name_u] (and [name_u]Janvier[/name_u]!) but probably wouldn’t use them. I have a weird thing for month names in other languages… I think [name_u]Janvier[/name_u] and [name_f]Juillet[/name_f] are SO cool.
19. What is your favorite Greek mythology name?
I don’t even know. I wouldn’t use a mythological name because of my faith anyway, but maybe [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] (like that there’s a [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] in the Bible, too!), or [name_f]Maia[/name_f], [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], or [name_f]Thisbe[/name_f]. I’m a big [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] fan but probably wouldn’t use her, and prefer the Hebrew origins of [name_f]Maya[/name_f] over [name_f]Maia[/name_f].
20. What is your favorite name from Harry Potter?
Oh, goodness, don’t even know. I know next to nothing about HP. I’m one of very few people who haven’t gotten into the series and really have no desire to. Knowing absolutely nothing about the characters, I think [name_m]Draco[/name_m], [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f], and [name_m]Sirius[/name_m] make super cool names, but pretty sure at least [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] isn’t a very lovely character.
21. What is your favorite name from F.R.I.E.N.D.S?
[name_f]Rachel[/name_f] for sure. I’ve loved the name [name_f]Rachel[/name_f] for eons. I am quite fond of [name_u]Chandler[/name_u] and [name_m]Ross[/name_m] too!
22. What is your favorite biblical name?
Too many to count! lol. [name_f]Tirzah[/name_f], [name_m]Boaz[/name_m], and [name_u]Aquila[/name_u] rank highest on my list, but I’m a big fan of [name_f]Eve[/name_f]/Eva, [name_f]Lydia[/name_f], [name_m]Judah[/name_m], [name_m]Peter[/name_m], [name_m]Bartholomew[/name_m], and [name_m]Barnabas[/name_m] too.
23. What is your favorite name with an unfortunate meaning?
I guess [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]. I actually love the meaning but I know a lot of people are put off by it. It seems rather insulting to me to categorically write off a name that means a physical handicap (like “blind”), so the dislike rubs me the wrong way, but I have a whole thing about [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] and the way [name_m]Jesus[/name_m] treated the blind, haha… this is probably not the right place for it.
24. What is your favorite name with a meaning related to the ocean?
The only one on my list right now is [name_m]Reef[/name_m], but I also adore [name_u]Ocean[/name_u]/Oceanus, [name_f]Kaia[/name_f], [name_f]Coralie[/name_f], [name_u]Mariner[/name_u], [name_u]Harbor[/name_u], and [name_f]Marine[/name_f].
25. What is your favorite totally made-up name?
Uhh… can’t think of one right now haha. Maybe Greyston/Grayston? I love it as a more surnamey alternative to uber-popular [name_u]Grayson[/name_u], but I’m pretty sure it has zero history.

CATEGORY 3: INTERNATIONAL NAMES

26. What is your favorite Māori name?
Te [name_f]Aroha[/name_f] is amazing. A very good friend of mine used Anahira/Anahera as a middle for one of her (half Maori) daughters, and I always liked that too.
27. What is your favorite Irish name?
[name_m]Eoghan[/name_m], [name_m]Lorcan[/name_m], and [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] are all on my boys’ list… I guess technically [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] but he could be a word name too, so maybe [name_m]Lorcan[/name_m] since he ranks higher for me than [name_m]Eoghan[/name_m] due to his straightforward spelling? Not a huge fan of Irish names for girls, maybe [name_f]Niamh[/name_f] or [name_f]Aislinn[/name_f]. [name_f]Fionnabhair[/name_f] (finn-ah-vare) is a huge GP.
28. What is your favorite English name?
[name_m]Jack[/name_m], maybe? [name_f]Daisy[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_m]Reef[/name_m], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_m]Peter[/name_m], [name_f]Audrey[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]… not sure if they really count because most are either word names or come from another origin and are traditional in [name_f]English[/name_f] now.
29. What is your favorite Turkish name?
LOVE [name_f]Esma[/name_f]/Azma/Azra and [name_m]Aslan[/name_m] for a boy.
30. What is your favorite Hebrew name?
Too many to count! [name_f]Ayla[/name_f] and [name_u]Tali[/name_u] top the list for girls, [name_m]Ben[/name_m]-[name_u]Ami[/name_u] for boys. [name_f]Nechama[/name_f], [name_f]Odelia[/name_f], [name_f]Maya[/name_f], [name_f]Tehila[/name_f], [name_u]Yuval[/name_u], [name_m]Noam[/name_m], [name_m]Moshe[/name_m], [name_m]Eliam[/name_m], and [name_m]Avram[/name_m] are also huge favorites.
31. What is your favorite Japanese name?
[name_f]Amaya[/name_f] or [name_f]Hana[/name_f]? Not hugely familiar with Japanese names tbh.
32. What is your favorite Hawaiian name?
[name_f]Auli’i[/name_f] or Kailei (kye-lay). I also love [name_f]Kaia[/name_f].
33. What is your favorite Indian name?
It’s a tie between [name_f]Priya[/name_f] and [name_f]Lilavati[/name_f]!
34. What is your favorite Russian name?
[name_f]Vera[/name_f] or [name_m]Semyon[/name_m]. I also love [name_f]Nadia[/name_f]/Nadezhda.
35. List some other international favorites of various origins!
Icelandic: Mæja
Polish: [name_f]Hania[/name_f] ([name_f]Hania[/name_f] is to [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] in Polish as [name_f]Anya[/name_f] is to [name_f]Anna[/name_f] in Russian!), [name_f]Michalina[/name_f]
Zulu: Isisa (eep, I love this name!!)
Italian: [name_f]Maddalena[/name_f], [name_m]Cristiano[/name_m]
[name_m]Dutch[/name_m]: [name_f]Fenna[/name_f], [name_f]Madelief[/name_f]
Hungarian: Mihaly, [name_f]Rahel[/name_f]
Portugese: [name_m]Simão[/name_m], Abraão, [name_f]Margarida[/name_f], [name_f]Amora[/name_f], Amália, [name_f]Evora[/name_f]
Greek: [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m], [name_f]Eleni[/name_f]

CATEGORY 4: TAG A BERRY

36. [name_m]Tag[/name_m] a Berry with names of a very similar style to you
I think the closest are these three? @baya44, @auroradawn, @acajou?
37. [name_m]Tag[/name_m] a Berry with OPPOSITE style to you, but whose names you love anyway
It’s been a while since I’ve been terribly active on nameberry honestly… maybe @coffeeorangecats? I LOVE her taste but our styles don’t always match up.
38. [name_m]Tag[/name_m] a Berry whose names you admire from afar, but rarely speak to
Uh, probably a lot. I’ve not been very active on nb lately.
39. [name_m]Tag[/name_m] a Berry who helped you discover a love for a new name
@dearest! She introduced me to a combo rather than a name in general ([name_f]Audrey[/name_f] [name_f]Cosima[/name_f], still a huge favorite!), but anyways.
40. [name_m]Tag[/name_m] a Berry whose names you’re always on the lookout for
@seawillow 10000000%. Also @aerieeerie!
41. [name_m]Tag[/name_m] a Berry who influenced your naming style
Too many to count. I especially love @babies123456 for teaching me about Hebrew names, though; they’ve become such an integral part of my list.

CATEGORY 5: OPINIONS

42. What’s a name everyone seems to love, but you’re not a fan of?
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Florence[/name_f], [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], [name_f]Naomi[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_u]Oliver[/name_u].
43. What’s a name everyone seems to dislike, but you love?
[name_u]Everly[/name_u]‘s probably the closest. Otherwise, not sure haha.
44. What do you think of alliterative names? What’s your favorite alliterative name? (e.g. Alaska Anouk, Madeleine Mae)
I love alliteration when it works! I don’t have an alliterative combo on my list just now, but wouldn’t be opposed to it. I used to love [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] [name_f]Opal[/name_f] and [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] [name_f]Odette[/name_f].
45. [name_f]Do[/name_f] name meanings matter to you?
They’re not a deciding factor on whether I keep a name around, but they definitely do add a layer of charm for me if it’s a lovely meaning. [name_m]Case[/name_m] in point, [name_f]Isobel[/name_f].
46. What’s your opinion on traditionally masculine names for girls, and traditionally feminine names for boys?
Not a fan personally. [name_u]Brady[/name_u]‘s a GP but I love names like [name_u]Avery[/name_u], [name_u]Harper[/name_u], [name_u]Bailey[/name_u], [name_u]Addison[/name_u], etc. on boys, so I guess that should tell you something?
47. Does name popularity influence your name decisions?
Rarely. I do love a LOT of names outside of the top 1000; I think that’s just sort of because how eclectic my list is and my preference for rare Biblical and international names. But I have a lot of popular top 100 names especially on my girls list, but also on the boys ([name_m]Samuel[/name_m], [name_m]Jack[/name_m], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Claire[/name_f], [name_f]Zoe[/name_f], [name_f]Audrey[/name_f], [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], etc.), so my list really is all over the place.
48. How much do other Berry opinions influence your name decisions?
Eh. I use it as a gauge to keep me in check from going TOO crazy ([name_m]Barzillai[/name_m], Pudens, Greystoke, le sigh).
49. What’s your opinion on using long, (but beautiful), easily mispronounced non-English names in an English-speaking country?
Eh, I’d have to be really committed to use it. I’m not unaware that it could be pretty unpleasant to deal with on a daily basis, but if the name meant enough, I would seriously consider it. [name_f]Eilidh[/name_f] and [name_m]Eoghan[/name_m] are on my list, but I wouldn’t consider them long. I would not use [name_f]Fionnabhair[/name_f], [name_m]Sebastião[/name_m], or [name_f]Nadezhda[/name_f] over [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], and [name_f]Nadia[/name_f].
50. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you follow naming trends?
I think a good part of my girls’ style does, but I’m not sure you could say my boys’ style does. haha. They could maybe fit trends but are definitely still very rare for the most part.

CATEGORY 6: MISC

51. What was the FIRST name you can remember loving? Do you still like/love it now?
[name_f]Abigail[/name_f] and [name_m]Peter[/name_m] were my respective first loves. I still LOVE [name_m]Peter[/name_m] ([name_u]Augustine[/name_u] [name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] is in my top 10; I’m considering adding [name_m]Peter[/name_m] as a FN too), and like [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] but probably wouldn’t use her. I’ve fallen out of love with the nn [name_u]Abby[/name_u] and feel like I couldn’t guarantee JUST [name_f]Abigail[/name_f]. I’m sort of thinking of adding her as a middle (considered [name_f]Vera[/name_f] [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] [name_f]Eliane[/name_f] the other day!), but I’m not sure. [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f], [name_f]Claire[/name_f], [name_f]Lacey[/name_f], and [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] (b) are other lifelong loves… [name_f]Claire[/name_f] is in my top 5 right now and as a family name, probably won’t ever go far away. [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] I ADORE but am not sure I’d use her since [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] means so much, but I’d love to find a home for her. [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] is a like but never seems like a love enough to add her to my list. [name_f]Lacey[/name_f] I’d add in a heartbeat for the right combo, and [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] I really like and would love to use to honor my Welsh ancestry, but with [name_f]Brynn[/name_f]'s current popularity for girls, who knows what’ll happen there.
52. Cutest matching names for twins?
I always liked [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] and [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] together, but I’m sort of over that… probably [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] and [name_f]Adele[/name_f] lol, or maybe [name_f]Adele[/name_f] and [name_u]Aquila[/name_u]? [name_u]Tali[/name_u] and [name_f]Tirzah[/name_f]? [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]? [name_m]Bartholomew[/name_m] and [name_m]Barnabas[/name_m]? [name_m]Jack[/name_m] and [name_m]Judah[/name_m]? [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] and [name_m]Reuben[/name_m]? [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_u]Everett[/name_u]?
53. If you had to give your kid a family name, what name would you pick?
[name_f]Grace[/name_f] or [name_m]John[/name_m] nn [name_m]Jack[/name_m], probably? I also like [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] but not up front. As a more contrived honor, [name_f]Claire[/name_f], [name_f]Liliana[/name_f], [name_f]Eilidh[/name_f], or [name_m]Boaz[/name_m].
54. What’s the best name in your family tree?
I think [name_m]Drury[/name_m] is pretty epic. I also love No@h, [name_f]Ave[/name_f].ry, Em3line, [name_m]Lott[/name_m]!e, etc.
55. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you prefer the ‘Hot Takes’ thread or the ‘Quick Poll’ thread? Why?
[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t really follow either honestly!
56. Show me some ‘aesthetic’ pictures that you feel match the vibe of your name.

[name_f]My[/name_f] internet doesn’t like me, so skipping this one.

CATEGORY 5: OPINIONS

Summary
  1. What’s a name everyone seems to love, but you’re not a fan of? [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]
  2. What’s a name everyone seems to dislike, but you love? Nameberry has a kind of mean entry for [name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f] not being ~poetic~ but I love it
  3. What do you think of alliterative names? What’s your favorite alliterative name? (e.g. Alaska Anouk, Madeleine [Mae] (Mae - Baby Name Meaning, Origin, and Popularity | Nameberry)) I think it depends- it can be really cute! I [name_u]Haven[/name_u]'t thought about it but [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f]
  4. [name_f]Do[/name_f] name meanings matter to you? It does but it’s not everything. Like [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] means “blind” and a lot of “mary” names mean “bitter” but I’d probably still use them
  5. What’s your opinion on traditionally masculine names for girls, and traditionally feminine names for boys? It depends. I really like using traditionally masculine names that have been more recently used for girls on boys- like [name_u]Madison[/name_u] or [name_u]Morgan[/name_u] or [name_u]Leslie[/name_u]. For girls I like unisex and surnames but I’m not a huge fan of straight up using traditional “boy” names like [name_u]James[/name_u] unless you’re willing to do the same with girls names for boys. I think names like [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] or [name_f]Joy[/name_f] make great boy middles.
  6. Does name popularity influence your name decisions? It doesn’t change how much I like it but I would change if I used it in a first spot if it was like in the top 10
  7. How much do other Berry opinions influence your name decisions? **They sometimes make me love a name or combo or could point out a potential problem I didn’t see but otherwise not hugely. **
  8. What’s your opinion on using long, (but beautiful), easily mispronounced non-English names in an English-speaking country? If it has meaning to you, you should use it. We can learn to say it.
  9. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you follow naming trends? **I feel like I do accidentally! usually when a name starts trending mor eif when I’ll first start hearing it and liking it. **

One of my longest lasting name crushes is [name_f]Astrid[/name_f]. CATEGORY 4: TAG A BERRY

Skipping this because it’s too hard to pick

CATEGORY 5: OPINIONS

  1. What’s a name everyone seems to love, but you’re not a fan of? [name_u]August[/name_u], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], and [name_f]Daisy[/name_f].
  2. What’s a name everyone seems to dislike, but you love? Seurat (as a middle).
  3. What do you think of alliterative names? What’s your favorite alliterative name? (e.g. Alaska Anouk, Madeleine Mae) I really like alliterative names, I think they can be lovely. I don’t have a particular favorite but I am currently super digging the combo Cassia Clare.
  4. [name_f]Do[/name_f] name meanings matter to you? Not really, to be honest, unless it’s a word name (then meaning matters a LOT to me) or the meaning is something especially problematic in [name_f]English[/name_f] or a language commonly spoken in my area (which is a 100% dealbreaker).
  5. What’s your opinion on traditionally masculine names for girls, and traditionally feminine names for boys? I don’t have an issue with them at all, and think they can be fun and fresh, but they’re not usually to my personal taste. I do love unisex names, and this is often how they’re created— I say in most cases, go for it! [name_f]My[/name_f] “sweet spot” is recognizable but not too common.
  6. Does name popularity influence your name decisions? Somewhat, but only in that if I were naming a kid I wouldn’t want them to be one of multiple of that name in their class.
  7. How much do other Berry opinions influence your name decisions? More than I’d like to admit, lol. I try not to let it, though, and strive to just like what I like!
  8. What’s your opinion on using long, (but beautiful), easily mispronounced non-English names in an English-speaking country? Absolutely fine!
  9. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you follow naming trends? Not knowingly, but I’m sure like most anyone, I’m not totally immune to influence.

CATEGORY 6: MISC

  1. What was the FIRST name you can remember loving? Do you still like/love it now? This is a hard one! Uh, maybe [name_m]Colin[/name_m] or [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f] or [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]? Yes, I still like all of them, but would only use [name_m]Colin[/name_m] of the three.
  2. Cutest matching names for twins? [name_f]Lavender[/name_f] and [name_f]Lilac[/name_f] has always been a favorite set of mine, however “matchy” it admittedly is. This isn’t the most popular around here, maybe, but I’m really into matching first initials for twins.
  3. If you had to give your kid a family name, what name would you pick? [name_u]James[/name_u] or [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f].
  4. What’s the best name in your family tree? I have a huge family and a lot of great names are in it, but my cousin named her son [name_m]Cedric[/name_m] a few years back, and I absolutely adore that name.
  5. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you prefer the ‘Hot Takes’ thread or the ‘Quick Poll’ thread? Why? Quick [name_u]Poll[/name_u], it’s a more positive thread overall, but Hot Takes is also fun sometimes and people (usually) keep things nice.

  5. What’s your opinion on traditionally masculine names for girls, and traditionally feminine names for boys? I think it’s fun depending on the name

  1. What’s a name everyone seems to love, but you’re not a fan of?
    [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] & [name_u]Quinn[/name_u]

  2. What’s a name everyone seems to dislike, but you love?
    [name_f]Vada[/name_f], [name_f]Vada[/name_f], [name_f]Vada[/name_f]! (In [name_u]Jan[/name_u] [name_u]Brady[/name_u]'s voice ) [name_m]Even[/name_m] my own boyfriend dislikes this name. sigh

  3. What do you think of alliterative names? What’s your favorite alliterative name? (e.g. Alaska Anouk, Madeleine Mae)
I love alliterative names, even if I probably wouldn’t be inclined to use them. I love the sound of [name_f]Nina[/name_f] [name_f]Natasha[/name_f].

  4. [name_f]Do[/name_f] name meanings matter to you?
When the time comes to name an actual baby, yes meanings matter. But right now just having fun trying different combos.

  5. What’s your opinion on traditionally masculine names for girls, and traditionally feminine names for boys?
I think that it’s a great way to pave a path for a more gender-neutral world. Technically, any name can be gender neutral, just like any word can become a name. I would love to see more bold choices!

  6. Does name popularity influence your name decisions?
At first it did deter me greatly, but one of my favorite names at the moment is [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], and by the time I have a baby, she might skyrocket even more. I have realized that as long as I’m not repeating names that my family has already used, then I’m good.

  7. How much do other Berry opinions influence your name decisions?
I would say I have learned so much from this community, I get about a 40% influence, great opinions & advice have been given! At the end of the day, however, my decisions have to be based on my personal taste though.

  8. What’s your opinion on using long, (but beautiful), easily mispronounced non-English names in an English-speaking country?
I think people have to make more of an effort to try and pronounce names correctly. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if [name_f]English[/name_f] is the primary language, there should be no reason to not give someone the respect they deserve. Parents should be able to choose the name that is close to their hearts.

  9. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you follow naming trends?
Not really! But I would love to.

CATEGORY 6: MISC

  1. What was the FIRST name you can remember loving? Do you still like/love it now?
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] & [name_f]Abigail[/name_f]. Yes, I still love the sounds of them, [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] more than [name_f]Abigail[/name_f], but I wouldn’t use [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] now. & [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] I may or may not use as a middle name one day.

  2. Cutest matching names for twins?
    When I was a teen, I swear I wanted to use [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] & [name_f]Violette[/name_f] Now I think I would use [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] & [name_f]Tatiana[/name_f] or [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] & [name_f]Madeline[/name_f].

  3. If you had to give your kid a family name, what name would you pick?
    [name_f]My[/name_f] aunt’s name is [name_f]Rosie[/name_f], so most likely I would do a variation of [name_f]Rose[/name_f], like [name_f]Wildrose[/name_f], [name_f]Roselle[/name_f], or [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f].

  4. What’s the best name in your family tree?
    [name_f]My[/name_f] grandmother’s sister is [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] & their mom’s name was [name_f]Esperanza[/name_f].

  5. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you prefer the ‘Hot Takes’ thread or the ‘Quick Poll’ thread? Why?
I am on the Quick [name_u]Poll[/name_u] Thread more often because I love seeing the amazing combos other berries come up with. Also to receive feedback on my own!

This took my a while, but a really fun idea! @julianicole5 - thank you for tagging me! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

CATEGORY 1: YOUR LIST (I’ve done the names on my UC because my big list is too long haha!)

What is your favorite girl’s name?

I am so indecisive and have so many favourites. Today my top 3 are Pearl, Daphne and Dorothy! So if I had to pick one favourite it would be either Daphne Pearl or Dorothy Pearl

What is your favorite boy’s name?

Again, hard for me to decide! I’ll go with my gut and say Linus!

What is the longest name/combo on your list?

Hermione Gwendolen

What is the shortest name/combo on your list?

Tell me the story behind a favorite name of yours.

The majority of my names have a story or special meaning (although some of the connections are somewhat tenuous!) Maybe I’ll post them all one day… I’ll briefly explain Daphne…

Daphne

I love the tree meaning of Daphne. Trees are very special to my family and me as my late granddad loved them and was very nature-oriented. Daphne is also a small link to my father David, who is important to me. Daphne also shares the same first syllable with daffodil which is a symbol for new beginnings and is a key emblem of Wales. Daffodils are also my mother’s favourite flower and are the flowers of her birth month too.

Josephine Lilac

What is the oldest name/combo on your list?

Louis Philip

What is the most underrated name on your list? (In your opinion!)

Mavis

What is the most unique name on your list?

Eithne, Maeve, Orla or Grainne

What is your favorite English name?

William and Hazel (I’d say most of my names are English…)

What is your favorite Turkish name?

Isra and Emre

CATEGORY 5: OPINIONS

What’s a name everyone seems to love, but you’re not a fan of?

June and Anouk

What’s a name everyone seems to dislike, but you love?

Virginia and Gladys

What do you think of alliterative names? What’s your favorite alliterative name? (e.g. Alaska Anouk, Madeleine Mae)

On the whole, I try not to have alliterative names (although I just realised that my real name and middle name are alliterative haha!) because my alliterative combinations tend to be a bit of a mouthful! Maybe Dorothy Delphine or Felicity Fae and Freddie Foxglove or Linus Leif

Do name meanings matter to you?

Yes, but pretty much only as a last resort if I’m deciding between a few names. Meaningfulness matters more to me than the actual meaning, if that makes sense!

What’s your opinion on traditionally masculine names for girls, and traditionally feminine names for boys?

It’s not really my style, personally. I prefer traditionally masculine names for girls than traditionally feminine names for boys, but I think that’s because I’m more adventurous with my girls’ names anyway.

Does name popularity influence your name decisions?

Yes and no! If it’s a name I really love then popularity won’t matter. My real name is popular but I don’t mind being one of several in my year. It does annoy me though when a name I love starts rising on the charts! I try and stick in the ‘known and pronounceable but not commonly used’ category.

How much do other Berry opinions influence your name decisions?

I’m quite headstrong so even if a name was last on a poll in the Quick Poll thread, it’s probably still going in my UC! I am influenced by the wonderful name taste of other Berries though.

What’s your opinion on using long, (but beautiful), easily mispronounced non-English names in an English-speaking country?

For me it always depends on how much you love the name. If it’s your favourite favourite name, go for it - a quick correction might be needed but they’ll always stand out. If you have doubts, maybe it would be better to pick an easily pronounced nickname or a variant.

Do you follow naming trends?

I don’t think so. I try to maintain my own style but I’ve noticed that names I’ve liked for ages have started becoming more popular/trendy - grr!

CATEGORY 6: MISC

What was the FIRST name you can remember loving? Do you still like/love it now?

Sunsetia when I was about 7! An interesting choice and not one I would go for today but Sunset would make a cute middle, for sure!

Cutest matching names for twins?

Marnie and Marigold or maybe Nathaniel and Edward nn Nate and Ned!

If you had to give your kid a family name, what name would you pick?

It’s an informal tradition in my family for the first girl to have the middle name Anne, although most of the names on my UC are family names

What’s the best name in your family tree?

Lots of names quite far back in my family tree are coming back - Margaret, Ernest, Mary, Alfred, Hilda, Irene, Elsie, Mabel, Olwen, Charles and Nathaniel. Some wild cards - Eluned, Gwladys, Islwyn, Alfryn, Cissie

Do you prefer the ‘Hot Takes’ thread or the ‘Quick Poll’ thread? Why?

I’ve been living in the Quick Poll thread recently but it’s so interesting reading the Hot Takes!

Show me some ‘aesthetic’ pictures that you feel match the vibe of your name.

I’ve interpreted this in different ways, so…

My real name's aesthetic

The aesthetic of me as a person

My naming style aesthetic

42. What’s a name everyone seems to love, but you’re not a fan of?
[name_f]Ava[/name_f]. It’s nothing wrong with it, per say, It’s just that I personally find it rather boring.

  1. What’s a name everyone seems to dislike, but you love?
Oh, this is tough! Maybe really old fashioned gems like [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] (yes, I adore this name!)

  2. What do you think of alliterative names? What’s your favorite alliterative name?
If the balance and sound is right they are perfectly fine! I like [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] a lot.

  3. Do name meanings matter to you?
It depends really. Sure, I do try to find names with great meanings, but It’s not super important.

  4. What’s your opinion on traditionally masculine names for girls, and traditionally feminine names for boys?
Each to their own. I mean, as long it’s nothing ridiculous it’s perfectly fine. I think it’s great when people want to break gender norms. In the Balkan countries, [name_u]Eden[/name_u] is a popular name for boys, for example.

  5. Does name popularity influence your name decisions?
I think like this: There’s a reason certain names are popular, it’s because they are great names. Popularity shouldn’t put you off from using a name you love. [name_f]My[/name_f] daughter [name_f]Thea[/name_f]’s name are in Top 20 here in [name_u]Sweden[/name_u], but it didn’t stop us, because it’s simply her name.

  6. How much do other [name_u]Berry[/name_u] opinions influence your name decisions
I love to go through the forums and read’s people insightful opinions of different names. I do take it into consideration, but in the end, it’s my decision.

  7. What’s your opinion on using, long, but beautiful, easily mispronounced non-[name_f]English[/name_f] names in an [name_f]English[/name_f]-speaking country?
I feel like if you don’t think that anyone else outside of yourself and your spouse can pronounce it, then you should go for another name.

  8. Do you follow naming trends?
I suppose so, since I gave my daughter a popular name, ha ha. Jokes aside, I like to keep up with what’s hot and what’s not, cause it for sure gives me inspiration for looking for similar names.

CATEGORY 4: TAG A BERRY

  1. I think @hyacinthbucket probably has the style most similar to my own that I’ve seen in the forums here.
  2. @leafygreens seems to have a style that’s very different from mine but I love seeing their combos. Always helps me see names through new eyes.
  3. @hannahhh @planetnames have great names and I love their polls but I’m not sure we’ve ever talked directly lol.
  4. Shout out to @rosepip for being my introduction to [name_f]Helisent[/name_f] and [name_f]Aurembiaix[/name_f].
  5. I’m always excited to see the names @Rosebeth and @seawillow are considering.
  6. A lot of the berries who helped influence my naming style aren’t really active these days, but more recently I would give some credit to @cactusgram, @ethelmary, @katkabet, and hyacinthbucket and rosepip again for inspiration.

CATEGORY 5: OPINIONS

  1. Everyone seems to like [name_f]Grace[/name_f] but I’m just not a fan.
  2. I absolutely adore [name_f]Gardenia[/name_f], no one else really seems to like it though.
  3. I’m generally not a huge fan of alliterative names but there are always exceptions and sometimes it works beautifully. Some of my favorite alliterative names that I’ve encountered are [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] [name_f]Carole[/name_f], [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] [name_f]Milicent[/name_f], [name_f]Emelia[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u], [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] [name_u]Rhys[/name_u], [name_m]Alistair[/name_m] [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m], and [name_m]Silas[/name_m] [name_m]Smith[/name_m].
  4. Meaning can matter, like if two names sound similar and I prefer the meaning of one over the other, that might sway me. But associations matter to me more than meaning.
  5. Idealistically, I’m all for blurring the lines when it comes to gender coding and names. More pragmatically, I see how sexism in a broader social sense influences why boys names crossing the aisle to feminine use is often trendy and fun and “unique” and “strong,” while girls names crossing the aisle to masculine use almost never happen and meet a lot of resistance. As for my personal preference, I tend to like softer, unisex, or feminine leaning names for boys, and while I don’t mind masculine names on girls theoretically, don’t generally care for a lot of the ones that are currently trending.
  6. To an extent. I had a super trendy name growing up which has definitely made me avoid extremely popular names, but I’m also not concerned with the name being unique. As long as it’s a name that’s not already prevalent in my social circle, and my kid won’t have 3+ other people with the same name in class, I’m good.
  7. I ways appreciate feedback from the community here but how much of that I absorb really depends. Other people disliking a name I love won’t necessarily make me ditch it, but if I was on the fence about the flow of a combo or something than the opinions of other berries might be weighted a bit heavier. Same if I’m specifically guaging usability as a first or if a name might be safer in the middle.
  8. I think it’s always important to consider what it will be like for child who has to wear a name, especially when it comes to potential spelling or pronunciation difficulties. That being said there are a lot of factors to consider and potential added intersections if the name in question has cultural significance to the parents. At the end of the day it’s a very personal decision either way.
Tldr: I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a long non [name_f]English[/name_f] name in an predominantly [name_f]English[/name_f] speaking area as long as the decision is well considered.
  9. Yes and no. I think it’s inevitable to follow trends to some extent, especially if you interact in forums like these. To some degree even just what names you’ll encounter out in the ether are affected by trends because names with buzz around them will have more reach. But I don’t deliberately follow trends and I’m not concerned with trying to be on trend. As I mentioned previously, a name being too popular can turn me off to it as a first name.

CATEGORY 6: MISC

  1. Already mentioned previously but [name_f]Odette[/name_f] is the earliest name I can remember loving and it’s still on my list today.
  2. I dislike matching names for twins but if I had to choose I’d either go with matching initials (because the names can still otherwise be quite different) or a nature theme. Examples:
    [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] and [name_f]Esmeralda[/name_f], [name_u]Fox[/name_u] and [name_m]Bjorn[/name_m], [name_f]Myrtle[/name_f] and [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f].
  3. If I had to give my child a family name it would be [name_f]Rose[/name_f]/ [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] (multigenerstionsl family name) or [name_u]Claude[/name_u] (my great grandpa.)

  5. I definitely spend a lot more time in the quick poll thread. The occasional vent is good and all and I appreciate the hot take thread, but I’m here more to talk about the names we love.
  6. My name? Hmm: parc-botanique-de-haute-bretagne-le-chatelier-dsc-0034-640x360
