Ally or Alison?

My sister in law really likes the name [name]Ally[/name] but she is afraid to use it as a stand alone name, she thinks the child may appreciate the more formal [name]Alison[/name] as she grows up. [name]Do[/name] you guys think [name]Ally[/name] is recognised fairly well as a name in its own right or do u think she should go with [name]Alison[/name] and use [name]Ally[/name] as a nickname?

I think she should use a fuller name like [name]Alison[/name]/[name]Allison[/name]. [name]Ally[/name] is cute but I can’t really imagine putting just [name]Ally[/name] on a resume or a wedding announcement, you know? If she doesn’t like [name]Alison[/name], there are other options–[name]Althea[/name], [name]Alaia[/name], [name]Allegra[/name], [name]Alice[/name], [name]Alexandra[/name]/[name]Alexa[/name]/[name]Alexis[/name]/[name]Alexia[/name]/[name]Alessia[/name]/[name]Alessandra[/name], [name]Alannah[/name]/[name]Alana[/name], [name]Alina[/name]/[name]Alena[/name], [name]Alouette[/name], etc.

Good luck to your [name]SIL[/name]!

I tend to agree…I like [name]Alice[/name]

I would go with the full name [name]Alison[/name]. I’m an [name]Alison[/name] and have only been called [name]Ali[/name] my whole life. BUT like someone mentioned in a previous post…I did put [name]Alison[/name] on my wedding invitation!

Not a huge fan of either, but I would go with alison nn ally, as ally is such a nickname to me. But I agree with pp that [name]Alice[/name] nn [name]Ally[/name] would be ideal. Or even [name]Alessandra[/name] nn [name]Alice[/name] and [name]Ally[/name]~

I think [name]Alison[/name] is a really nice, classic, simple name. [name]Alice[/name] is so pretty, too. [name]Ally[/name] is more of a nickname type of name to me and doesn’t really stand alone. Also- if none of these longer forms of [name]Ally[/name] appeal you can look for names that have an -al ending or ‘al’ somewhere in the middle. [name]Chantal[/name] would be one example.

My name is [name]Allison[/name]. I like having a full name with option of using [name]Ally[/name] as a NN.

I know an [name]Ally[/name] who’s twelve or thirteen, and she’s just [name]Ally[/name]–[name]Ally[/name] [name]Marie[/name]. I think her parents’ reasoning was that if they were only going to call her [name]Ally[/name], that should be her name. They had to talk the grandparents round, but it works fine now. Her brother and sister are [name]Dylan[/name] and [name]Madeline[/name]. I also know a little [name]Alison[/name], nicknamed [name]Ali[/name], and I have to say I prefer that option, though I’m not a big fan of either name.
