Hey guys,
I was just thinking about the name [name]Alma[/name]. My great-grandma’s name was [name]Alma[/name] [name]Jane[/name] - and I was wondering if it was ready for revival yet?
It’s origin is Latin, and it means soul. I’m not pregnant - but just thinking So do you think it could work well on a little girl?
And some possible nicknames/middle names to go with it?!
Well my little baby is an [name]Elsa[/name], which is also quite old ladyesque!
My only hesitiation would be that in [name]Russia[/name], they call their version of Bigfoot the [name]Alma[/name]. Although that is very obscure.
We chose the name [name]Elsa[/name] after my husband’s late mother, who was named [name]Elizabeth[/name]. Perhaps you could ponder changing [name]Alma[/name] around if you are not so sure:
I love the name [name]Alma[/name]! It’s not too common but still sounds familiar to most people and is definitely on track with the other “old” names that are coming back into style. I think [name]Alma[/name] is great on it’s own. The only nickname I can think of is [name]Aly[/name] (maybe pronounced like [name]Ollie[/name]/[name]AH[/name]-lee) so it stays in line with the name. I think you could either pair it with a short and sweet one syllable middle name to get a spunky feel or a longer more ornate three or more syllable name to get a more frilly name, depending on your taste.
I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Alma[/name]. I know a lot of people think it’s old ladyish, but I can totally see it on a little girl (I know a 14 year old [name]Alma[/name], actually). The only nickname I can think of would be [name]Al[/name] or [name]Ali[/name]. Middles:
I find [name]Alma[/name] a little clunky due to the consonant cluster (lm), but [name]Allie[/name] is a good nickname, even if it is usable for a large number of names ([name]Alice[/name], [name]Alexandra[/name], [name]Alison[/name], [name]Alyssa[/name] etc.). I associate the name with the Battle of [name]Alma[/name] in the Crimean War - the name experienced a small peak in popularity after the battle, which I consider slightly morbid. However, it is an odd and obscure association to have, and I doubt that many would think of the battle when they hear ‘[name]Alma[/name]’.
I would pair [name]Alma[/name] with something 2 syllables or longer, and starting with a consonant:
[name]Alma[/name] [name]Clemency[/name]
[name]Alma[/name] [name]Josephine[/name]
[name]Alma[/name] [name]Daphne[/name]
[name]Alma[/name] [name]Judith[/name]
[name]Alma[/name] [name]Natalie[/name]
[name]Alma[/name] [name]Sophie[/name]
[name]Alma[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name]
[name]Alma[/name] [name]Gwendolen[/name]
I love, love, love the name [name]Alma[/name]! That name has been immortalized in [name]Tom[/name] Lehrer’s funny song about [name]Alma[/name] Mahler Gropius Werfel. (A true story!) Check it out on YouTube:

All modern women are jealous.
Which of your magical wands
Got you [name]Gustav[/name] and [name]Walter[/name] and [name]Franz[/name]?
It’s one of my favourite names!
[name]Alma[/name] means ‘soul’ which is awesome! It’s too popular for me to use in Norway (along with [name]Alva[/name]) but if I ever move to [name]England[/name] like I’ve been thinking about, [name]Alma[/name] will be high on my list!
There’s also a wonderful little animated short film called [name]Alma[/name] circling the web somewhere, it’s one of the best things I’ve seen in a long time!!
Here’s a link –> Alma on Vimeo
The little [name]Alma[/name] in the film is soooo sweet while somewhat boyish which I think is very fitting ^^ You should really see it!
[name]Love[/name] sweet [name]Alma[/name]! [name]Alma[/name], [name]Elsa[/name], and [name]Inez[/name] are names that I would have never considered a few years ago but that have definitely grown on me lately.

[name]Alma[/name] was my great-grandmother’s name too! Not my personal favorite name but I can see the appeal for others. Especially neat if the name is in your family tree.
Yikes! That is a very creepy animated short, Dearest! Naturally, I [name]LOVE[/name] IT!!!

It’s awesome! I’m glad you like it!
They chose the name [name]Alma[/name] because it means ‘soul’. Considering the ending, it’s the perfect name for her!
My great-grandmother’s name was [name]Alma[/name] [name]Charlotta[/name]. As popular as it seems to have been it should have a comeback of its own. I like it a lot myself but probably as a middle name since I tend to lean towards longer girls names as my favorites.
[name]Alma[/name] is a family name with me as well, so I love this name for a girl. It was also popular in the mid to late 1800s. I’m not sure if I will use it, but I love it.
