Aloysius

[name]How[/name] on earth do you pronounce [name]Aloysius[/name]. I just saw it run across the NameBerry banner. My only experience with it is as the name of [name]Sebastian[/name] Flyte’s stuffed bear in Brideshead Revisited. I’ve seen 2 film adaptations and I think they may have pronounced it differently in both.

When I read the book, I think I pronounced it [name]Al[/name]-oy-zee-us, realized that couldn’t possibly be a name and decided it must be [name]Al[/name]-oh-ee-shuss but I think neither are correct. Does anyone know?

I pronounce it a-loe-ISH-uhs, and I’m British. I know it’s pronounced differently in Germany (ah-loi-[name]ZEE[/name]-uws).

I would say ‘ah-loee-zee-uss’

The correct way to pronounce it [name]Al[/name]-ah-wish-es. I say [name]Al[/name]-U-wish-es. That was my Italian Grandfathers middle name. When I first saw it I had no idea how to say it until I asked my Grandmother. Its a saint which is nice but I would think twice about naming your child that. Teachers, will never get that one right.

[name]Al[/name]-oh-WISH-us / [name]Al[/name]-low-ISH-us (I’m Australian)

Thanks very much! It’s a fun name that is apparently belongs to more cultures than I thought.

The way I say it is most like [name]Al[/name]-oh-wish-us. For reference, I live in the northwest region of US.

I know an [name]Aloysius[/name] who pronounces it ’ [name]Al[/name]-low-WISH-us’ - he’s Irish and I’m English but that’s how I’d pronounce it too. His brother [name]Pius[/name] had the nn ‘Pope’!

For some reason I drift toward uh-[name]LOY[/name]-shuss. In the US. Apparently in the minority (and sort of [name]German[/name]?).

I actually live about 20-30 min away from St. [name]Aloysius[/name] Orphanage, where my grandfather actually grew up, but its generally shortened it St. [name]Al[/name]'s.
Around here (Midwest) its [name]Al[/name]-you-ish-us or [name]Al[/name]-u-wish-is. It is a bit of a tongue twister though.

On skins there is a character who pronounces it al-o-ish-us

The English pronunciation is “[name]Al[/name]-oh-WISH-us”.
