Alpha?

Opinions on this name? I keep coming back to it, but I don’t know if I find it usable. I think it’s pretty and unusual, but I don’t know if it’s feminine enough (I prefer it on girls) because of connections such as alpha male.

What do you think of it? What would you pair it with?

[name_f]TIA[/name_f]!

It’s not useable

Hmm, tough one! Have you heard of the book [name_f]Every[/name_f] Soul a [name_f]Star[/name_f]? Here is a link…

One of the main characters, who goes by [name_f]Ally[/name_f], is actually named [name_f]Alpha[/name_f]! I think it is very cool, and definitely see why you like it. But maybe it is best left as a character and not a real life girl?!

I would suggest [name_f]Athena[/name_f], [name_f]Astraea[/name_f], or [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] as alternatives.

Maybe as a middle?

I can’t think of a good reason why [name_f]Alpha[/name_f] isn’t usable. I would go with [name_f]Aphra[/name_f], [name_f]Ada[/name_f], [name_f]Alba[/name_f] or [name_f]Alma[/name_f] because they’re more recognizable as names rather than having a lot of word name baggage ([name_f]Alpha[/name_f] male, [name_f]Alpha[/name_f] and [name_u]Omega[/name_u], Alphabet, etc). But [name_f]Delta[/name_f] and [name_u]Echo[/name_u] have been used for girls, so [name_f]Alpha[/name_f] doesn’t seem completely out of left field.

Unfortunately, for me, the name does carry a lot of “word name baggage” as the pp put it, with the way it’s used in popular culture for things like “alpha male.”

I’d pick [name_f]Alma[/name_f] or [name_f]Alba[/name_f] as a substitute, or maybe [name_f]Aoife[/name_f]? I’m not an Irish speaker, so I invite correction if I’m wrong, but I belief it’s pronounced “Ee-fa.”

I wouldn’t use it, any other child would probably feel inferior to the child named [name_f]Alpha[/name_f] as it does have such strong connection with being the leader, the first & the best.

I second this.

If you really love it, maybe change the spelling or bump it to the middle spot? Also, I wanted to add [name_f]Elva[/name_f] for similar suggestions.

Thank you all for your help and suggestions, they are all wonderful! I especially like [name_f]Aoife[/name_f], [name_f]Ada[/name_f], [name_f]Alba[/name_f] and [name_u]Artemis[/name_u], but the others are stunning ad well!

Not usable to me. Other than the term alpha male, the first thing I thought was, “…and omega?”

I kind of like it! Reminds me of Alphys from Undertale. Also reminds me of [name_m]Alfred[/name_m]/[name_u]Alfie[/name_u], so I think it could work for a boy too. If the word association is an issue, spelling it [name_f]Alfa[/name_f] might make it seem less like a word and more like a variant of [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] or a nickname for [name_f]Alfreda[/name_f]?

Too many negatives with this name…as mentioned previously…alpha male, alpha dog. People will ask if her sister is [name_u]Omega[/name_u]. She’ll get Alphabet when learning letters in school. [name_f]Alpha[/name_f] doesn’t even sound pretty. It’s a greek letter…not a girl’s name.

I actually went to high school with a girl named [name_f]Alpha[/name_f]! I have to admit, it seemed a little weird to me at first, but she wore it well. I think it works for her, so I don’t see why it couldn’t work for someone else.

I can’t get past the word alpha’s connotations to see it as a usable name.

I think it could work as a nickname for another name, e.g. [name_f]Alfreda[/name_f] nn. [name_f]Alfa[/name_f]. I don’t think [name_f]Alpha[/name_f] would work as a full name, sorry.
