Alternative to nickname for Christopher

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there, Berries! It is tradition in both my family and DH’s family to name the firstborn son after their father, so I was not surprised when we found out we were expecting a boy and my DH said he wanted a [name_m]Junior[/name_m]. The only problem is I have two Uncle’s, each with sons who have sons named [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] as well as two cousin [name_f]Christa[/name_f]'s and an aunt [name_f]Christine[/name_f]. My husband was also named after his Uncle, [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]. So it is a very common name on both sides - all [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]‘s being called [name_u]Chris[/name_u]. My family has gone as far as having a Big [name_u]Chris[/name_u], [name_f]Lil[/name_f]’ [name_u]Chris[/name_u] and [name_u]Baby[/name_u] [name_u]Chris[/name_u]. While I don’t have a problem with the name, nor do I want to deny my husband a junior, I just don’t want my son to be another [name_u]Chris[/name_u] in the family. I’ve read that [name_u]Kit[/name_u] can be used as a nickname and I’m not crazy about it, I also don’t think I could sell our families on it. So, I’ve been wondering if [name_f]Cruise[/name_f]/[name_u]Cruz[/name_u] could be an acceptable alternative - or if it’s too far of a stretch? Please help, all suggestions are welcome!!

PS: DH and I once had a neighbor with a son called CJ that really ruined that option for us.

I knew a [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] who went by [name_m]Topher[/name_m]. I’ve also known many Juniors who went by their middle name instead.

I also thought of [name_m]Topher[/name_m]. If not, how about calling him [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]? I have a nephew that is 20 years old now, and still goes by [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]. (A very handsome name, by the way.)

I honestly never considered the charm of [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] because of al the [name_u]Chris[/name_u]’. Thanks for the [name_m]Topher[/name_m] suggestion, I’ll ask my husband!

[name_m]Christophe[/name_m] ([name_m]Christoff[/name_m]), [name_u]Christo[/name_u] (pronounced [name_u]Chris[/name_u]-tow) [name_m]Topher[/name_m], [name_u]Kit[/name_u], [name_m]Kip[/name_m]

I think calling him by his middle name is the best idea

[name_m]Christopher[/name_m]:
[name_u]Theo[/name_u] (all letters found in christopher)

That’s a lot of [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]'s! Seconding [name_m]Topher[/name_m] and Toph. My brother is a [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] and we call him [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]. He’s also been called [name_u]Christo[/name_u]. Me? I call him [name_f]Chrissy[/name_f]-Pooh and [name_f]Chrissy[/name_f]-[name_u]Robin[/name_u] (For [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] the Pooh). I don’t recommend that in public! There’s also [name_m]Kester[/name_m]. I think that’s the Scottish [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]. Bit of a stretch but with that many [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]'s you may have to stretch.

I have a cousin called Crickey for [name_m]Christoper[/name_m]. Maybe [name_f]Cricket[/name_f] or [name_m]Kip[/name_m] could work as well?

I also thought of [name_m]Topher[/name_m]. I love the name [name_m]Topher[/name_m], and may even use it as a full name…
Or Toph.
I also, know a little boy named [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]…who goes by Critter/Critt…
My little cousin [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] goes by Topper, and my uncle [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] goes by Fiffer…

Plus you can use [name_m]Kristof[/name_m]/[name_m]Christof[/name_m] or just Stoff
Cristo
Tiffer
[name_m]Chip[/name_m]
Ris
Rist
[name_u]Kit[/name_u] or [name_m]Kito[/name_m]
[name_m]Kip[/name_m]

Or what would his middle name be? If it flows well you could call him his middle and first name…
My friends little brother goes by his first and middle…[name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] [name_m]Jacob[/name_m].

Also, perhaps a nickname that can easily be related to [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]…
[name_m]Columbus[/name_m]?

Ahh, I absolutely love [name_u]Kit[/name_u]! [name_m]Even[/name_m] more than [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]! So sad you don’t like it. It’s what I was going to suggest!

I love [name_u]Kit[/name_u] but since you’re not crazy about it, I also like the suggestions of [name_u]Christo[/name_u], [name_m]Christof[/name_m] & [name_m]Kip[/name_m]. [name_m]Kip[/name_m] is my favorite!

Another idea - which I like only as a nickname, not a given name - is [name_m]Tripp[/name_m], since he is the “third [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]” (DH’s uncle, DH & baby).

Is your family religious? If so I do think you could get away with calling him [name_u]Cruz[/name_u] since [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] means “[name_m]Christ[/name_m]-bearer.”

[name_u]Kit[/name_u]! It’s the traditional name for [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] and so fashionable and underused! I love [name_m]Topher[/name_m] and [name_m]Kester[/name_m] as well. [name_u]Cruz[/name_u] is a cool idea.

[name_m]Kick[/name_m]
[name_m]Kiko[/name_m]
[name_m]Chip[/name_m]
[name_u]Christie[/name_u]
Tophey
[name_u]Corey[/name_u]
Cree
[name_m]Coty[/name_m]
depending on his middle name, a smush like [name_u]Cody[/name_u] ([name_m]Cristopher[/name_m] D–), [name_m]Coby[/name_m] ([name_m]Christopher[/name_m] B–), [name_u]Cal[/name_u] ([name_m]Christopher[/name_m] [name_m]Al[/name_m]—)

I do advise you against calling him by his middle name if you can avoid it: it gets super confusing and annoying as you grow up. [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] is such a versatile name that you don’t need to do it [name_f]IMO[/name_f].

Is there anyone who just goes by CJ in your family? As in [name_u]Chris[/name_u] [name_m]Jr[/name_m]. Or how about your last name…is there an initial you can use that creates a name? i.e: [name_m]KAM[/name_m]= [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] [name_f]Ann[/name_f] Michaels (goes by Kammi).
