First time poster here. Me and my husband are expecting our first, gender unknown (not sure if we want to know yet!). We are a bit stumped on name ideas so here I am! If we have a girl, he would really like to name for his Gran, [name_f]Virginia[/name_f], who basically raised him and died recently. I love the idea but I’m not a fan of the name due to the teasing potential. The only option we’ve come up with is to try to find a name that can be shortened to [name_f]Ginny[/name_f], [name_f]Ginevra[/name_f] being the only one I can think of. Does anyone have any other ideas of other names that lead to [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] or other ways to honour [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] without using the actual name?
[name_f]Ginevra[/name_f] is gorgeous! Off the top of my head I also came up with [name_f]Ginger[/name_f], [name_f]Ginelle[/name_f], [name_f]Gianna[/name_f], [name_f]Giovanna[/name_f], [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f], and [name_f]Regina[/name_f] or just [name_f]Gina[/name_f]!
[name_f]Vira[/name_f] is a cute [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] tribute [name_f]IMO[/name_f].
[name_f]Virginia[/name_f] means “pure” so you could also look at other names with that meaning. There are a lot! Names That Mean Pure | Nameberry
[name_f]Nova[/name_f] is one that caught my eye.
You could use a V name that’s unrelated, or one that shares more similarities like [name_u]Vida[/name_u], [name_f]Viva[/name_f], or [name_f]Vera[/name_f]. I’m not sure if you’re in the US or not, but you could use another state name like [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] or [name_f]Carolina[/name_f].
Names that could be shortened to [name_f]Ginny[/name_f]: [name_f]Geneva[/name_f], [name_f]Genevive[/name_f], [name_f]Ginger[/name_f], [name_f]Ginnifer[/name_f], [name_f]Georgia[/name_f]/[name_f]Georgina[/name_f]/[name_f]Georgiana[/name_f], [name_f]Imogen[/name_f], [name_f]Giovanna[/name_f], [name_f]Gianna[/name_f]
Ginerva was actually the first one I thought of! Another one is [name_u]Pepper[/name_u]. Virgina is [name_u]Pepper[/name_u] Potts real first name. It’s a good option if you also like [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] movies.
Thankyou all so much for the replies and ideas, I hadn’t thought of looking for similar meanings, I’ll run that idea past him tonight and report back with any options! I like [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] as a route to [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] too.
We are in the UK so it hadn’t even occurred to me that it was a state - apologies all, geography was never a strength of mine!
I believe [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] originally honored [name_f]Queen[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] I-so there are myriad possibilities:
[name_f]Bess[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
[name_f]Libby[/name_f]
Liddy
[name_f]Ginny[/name_f]
[name_f]Ginevra[/name_f]
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]
ALL of the Virginias that I know are called [name_f]Ginny[/name_f]. I’m talking multiple generations from my mother’s through mine and also my kids’ classmates… all called [name_f]Ginny[/name_f]. Most are in USA, but one is in [name_f]England[/name_f].
I’ve never met a [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] called anything else. Have you?
What was this grandmother called by her peers? [name_f]Vergie[/name_f]???
LOL …like [name_u]Fergie[/name_u] (in the [name_u]Royal[/name_u] family)?
[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Geneva[/name_f], [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f], [name_f]Gwyneth[/name_f]?
If you wanted a V name instead of [name_f]Virginia[/name_f], you could try [name_f]Victoria[/name_f], [name_f]Vera[/name_f], [name_f]Verity[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Valerie[/name_f], [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f], [name_f]Vienna[/name_f]?
care - I believe she answered to both her full name and [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] but she always insisted everyone called her Gran so not 100% on that one!
gabrielle - My husband would like her to have a more “official” name as [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] alone is too nickname-y apparently! I’m ambivalent enough about it not to argue!
He wasn’t keen on the meaning idea and names beginning with V aren’t connected enough but we do both like [name_f]Ginevra[/name_f] and [name_f]Imogen[/name_f], we’ll call that an allround win.
Thankyou for your help everyone. If there are any other ideas anyone has, I’m all ears!
Not sure if this has been suggested but I know a [name_f]Ginna[/name_f]. [name_f]Regina[/name_f] would also work to get to [name_f]Ginny[/name_f].
Where I live the name [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] is actually quite popular. I have taught at least half a dozen teenage Virginias in the past ten years and once had two in the same class. I have never known one to be teased for her name.
