[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there!
I have a bit of a dilemma. We are expecting a baby boy in two weeks and our top pick for his name was [name_m]Casper[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m]. Yesterday I found out my cousin named his baby [name_m]Casper[/name_m]. We are not close and only meet like once a year if even that but I’d still feel weird using the same name. My first instinct was to flip the names to [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Casper[/name_m], but I don’t like the flow as much and DH dislikes [name_m]John[/name_m] (he only agreed to it in the middle spot to keep the tradition going). We both like [name_m]Jasper[/name_m], but now it feels like we’re settling for something that’s just ok because we prefer [name_m]Casper[/name_m]. We also like [name_m]Caspian[/name_m], but is it too “[name_m]Prince[/name_m] [name_m]Caspian[/name_m]”? Can you think of some other names that we might like?
Ugh, that’s a tough situation!
Maybe…
[name_m]Cassius[/name_m]
[name_m]Cassian[/name_m]
[name_u]Cassidy[/name_u]
[name_m]Crispin[/name_m]
[name_u]Aspen[/name_u]
[name_m]Caius[/name_m]
[name_m]Jesper[/name_m]
Vesper
Good luck!
Thank you. I like [name_u]Aspen[/name_u] and [name_u]Vesper[/name_u] but I prefer them for girls. [name_m]Cassian[/name_m] I think will go on my list.
I really like [name_m]Caspian[/name_m], and I don’t think it’s too [name_m]Prince[/name_m] [name_m]Caspian[/name_m], so I’d go for that. Otherwise I agree that [name_m]Cassian[/name_m] is a nice alternative.
Some of the names that seem similar to me (and maybe only to me…) are these ones:
[name_u]Kit[/name_u] (short for [name_m]Christopher[/name_m])
[name_m]Conrad[/name_m]
[name_u]Curtis[/name_u]
[name_m]Jasper[/name_m]
[name_m]Cole[/name_m], [name_m]Coleman[/name_m]
[name_m]Gibson[/name_m]
[name_u]Cameron[/name_u]
[name_m]Quinton[/name_m]
[name_m]Crispin[/name_m]
[name_u]Camden[/name_u]
[name_m]Cain[/name_m]
[name_m]Topher[/name_m]
[name_u]Tristin[/name_u]
[name_m]Kellen[/name_m]
[name_m]Cayson[/name_m]
I’ll go out on a limb and suggest [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] too… because of the association with the jazz saxophonist ([name_u]Dexter[/name_u] [name_m]Gordon[/name_m]). I think that association will be the one that sticks as the child grows up, not the TV show connection.
I like [name_m]Caspian[/name_m]!
My first thought was [name_m]Casimir[/name_m]. My other two recommendations have already been listed-- [name_m]Cassius[/name_m] and [name_m]Conrad[/name_m].
I would really encourage you to go ahead and use [name_m]Casper[/name_m] anyway.
Me too! [name_m]Casper[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] is a great name.
[name_m]Jasper[/name_m]
[name_m]Castiel[/name_m]
[name_m]Espen[/name_m]
[name_m]Prosper[/name_m]
[name_m]Cashel[/name_m]
[name_m]Cassiel[/name_m]
[name_m]Castor[/name_m]
[name_m]Aston[/name_m]
[name_m]Alistair[/name_m]
[name_m]Dashiell[/name_m]
Tough situation. I really like both [name_m]Casper[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] and [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Casper[/name_m] and I personally don’t think any of the alternatives are as nice as those two names. If your husband is vetoing [name_m]John[/name_m] as a first name, than I would encourage you to stick with [name_m]Casper[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m].
If those are out, then maybe go back to the drawing board and find a completely different name that you both like? I don’t think I’d be tempted by the [name_m]Jasper[/name_m]/[name_m]Caspian[/name_m]/[name_m]Cassian[/name_m]/etc… group of names.
I think you should stick with [name_m]Casper[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m]. It’s a handsome name, you both love it, and it seems silly to give up a name you love because once a year your child might be in the vicinity of another child with the same name.
[name_m]Jasper[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] reminds me of the painter [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] Johns so if you do use [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] it is something that you should be aware of. It does lend itself to a JJ nickname, though.
I love the name [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] and you could use [name_m]Ian[/name_m] as a nickname.
Other names that you might like:
[name_m]Crispin[/name_m]
[name_m]Christopher[/name_m] with [name_u]Kit[/name_u]
[name_m]Jesper[/name_m]
[name_m]Dashiell[/name_m]
[name_m]Casper[/name_m] is out. It doesn’t matter to me if the kids only meet once a year. Or even if they never meet. We don’t have a big family so it doesn’t feel right to use the same name.
Thanks everyone! I like [name_u]Camden[/name_u], [name_u]Curtis[/name_u], [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m], [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] and [name_u]Ashton[/name_u].
Right now I think our top pick is [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m].
I love [name_m]Caspian[/name_m]!!! However it doesn’t flow quite as well with [name_m]John[/name_m] as [name_m]Casper[/name_m] did. I prefer [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] [name_u]Jude[/name_u]. [name_u]Jude[/name_u] is slightly more unusual, but still very familiar, so I think it suits [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] better. It’s sound is also a little softer than [name_m]John[/name_m]. I just think it has a better flow.
Of the other [name_m]Cas[/name_m]- names I particularly love [name_m]Cassius[/name_m], pronounced [name_u]Cass[/name_u]-ee-us, and [name_m]Cassian[/name_m], pronounced [name_m]Cas[/name_m]-ee-an. I also love [name_m]Castiel[/name_m], which is connected to the angel of Thursday and means “shield of God”. [name_m]Cassiel[/name_m] is a similar name and shares [name_m]Casper[/name_m]'s soft sound.
I agree that [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] doesn’t flow as nicely as [name_m]Casper[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m]. But [name_m]John[/name_m] has been used in my husband’s family for I don’t even know how long so it will definitely be one of the names. I’ve been thinking about maybe adding a second middle. Maybe my mother’s maiden name - [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] [name_m]John[/name_m] H–t / [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] H–t. On the other hand the more I say [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] H–t out loud the more it grows on me.
Then go with [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m]! A meaningful connection with the name is more important than anything else. And I think you are right. The more I say [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] the better it sounds, especially if you think it sounds good with your last name.
With [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] in the equation, I prefer [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] [name_m]John[/name_m]. You also might consider something similar to [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] as a tribute, like [name_u]Elliot[/name_u]. [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] [name_m]John[/name_m] sounds very good to my ears! Perhaps it is also worth noting that [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] is beautiful. I think it has a really good flow to it, almost a magical quality.
Whatever variation you go with, whether it is just [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m], [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] or something a little longer, they are all beautiful! It is just a matter of tweaking them and finding the perfect fit for you! Best of luck!! And congrats on picking such a beautiful name!
