Hello friends! I was hoping some fellow name lovers could help me find a name similar to August, that isn’t August.
For some background information, August is our top name pick for a boy. And while I do believe in using the name you absolutely love, my husband and I agree that we don’t want our kid to be one of many in a class/grade/school etc. While we know this can technically be unavoidable, we’d like to at least attempt to prevent it from happening.
Why do we like August?
It sounds great with our surname
It’s softer sounding and has a subtle nature connection
It’s a familiar enough name, with one spelling that’s easy to say/pronounce
Has some nickname options that aren’t a “default” (ex. Matthew will always get Matt right away, whereas August might get Auggie or Gus interchangeably)
Is familiar but not a trendy name (yes it’s getting more popular, but I would consider it a more old fashioned name).
It fits in with our own names, our dog’s name and genuinely feels like it could be our sons name.
Some things we don’t like in general
Super long, extravagant names. We find 1-2 syllable names the most appealing, especially with our 3 syllable surname
Super popular names, trendy names, unique/multiple spelling options.
Names that will immediately be reduced down to a nickname (ex. Maxwell will get called Max)
Harsh sounding or super masculine names
In addition to August, we like Darcy, Jasper, Ezra, Brooks & Lionel. Darcy is the only other name we’re seriously considering as a first, the rest don’t work with our surname or are contenders for a middle name.
Oh I love [name_u]August[/name_u], and also [name_u]Jasper[/name_u] and [name_u]Lionel[/name_u] from your list! Hoping you’ll like

We really like [name_m]Linus[/name_m] and [name_u]Amos[/name_u]! [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] has been a favourite too, but between it’s popularity and my husband not liking it, it’s been vetoed at this point.
@Greyblue One of those names will be included for sure as it’s our surname haha! [name_u]Jem[/name_u] and [name_m]Oslo[/name_m] are super cool.
@shorie [name_f]My[/name_f] husband really likes [name_m]Anders[/name_m], so maybe that’s one we should revisit.
@Mar I really want to love [name_m]Angus[/name_m], but it just reminds me of beef and I can’t shake the association. We just might if we can’t find anything to top it.
@coupletoutofrhyme I love a lot of these. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband has vetoed [name_m]Silas[/name_m] though, which sucks because I love it. We do have [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] and [name_m]Soren[/name_m] on our longer list of names.
i say you should totally use august! feels perfect for you for so many reasons and for me it’s not thaat popular like for example oliver
and you’ll maybe regret not using your fav name!
love jasper & lionel from your list

I’m not going to list all of my suggestions here because most have been mentioned already by others; however I do want to suggest [name_u]Callum[/name_u]! Due to a family connection it’s the name I most wish I could use but can’t, so I suggest it to people all the time, but I feel like it ticks a lot of your boxes - soft, familiar but unusual, subtle nature connection (it’s Latin for “dove”). I don’t know your surname though.
I also love [name_u]August[/name_u]. It was a front runner for us too for many of the same reasons that you mentioned. We chose [name_m]Linus[/name_m] for our son. We use the nicknames “Nox” and “Lino” for him.
