My DH and I are expecting our first and we love the name [name_m]Marcus[/name_m] for him if this baby is a little guy. But, we are worried about the name’s popularity. It’s is the top 200!
I don’t want my son to have a very common name, but at the same time, not a very strange one. I would feel bad if there were 3 other Marcuses in my child’s class and he had to go [name_m]Marcus[/name_m] A.
We have also considered [name_m]Marc[/name_m], and [name_m]Marco[/name_m], but they just don’t feel the same. Are there any names out there with a common feel? Or should we just go with [name_m]Marcus[/name_m]?
His middle name will be [name_u]Emery[/name_u].
I think it’s a great, strong name, and top 200 is not very common at all! To me, that just means yes, people have heard it so no one will have to ask him to repeat but I really would think it was a major fluke if there was another in the same class.
Top 200 does not remotely make a name popular! [name_m]Even[/name_m] with the top 10 it’s statistically unlikely that there will be another in the same class, considering the very low percentage of babies given even the most popular names, though of course there is also regional popularity to consider. But honestly, I think you’re worrying over nothing! [name_m]Marcus[/name_m] is a great name

I honestly don’t think you’d have to worry about the popularity. Top 200 isn’t really that popular.
My name was at the 170 spot the year I was born, and there was only one other child with my name (in any spelling—there are several) in my school of ~900. So I wouldn’t automatically assume he’ll be one of many Marcuses. Personally, I think it’s a wonderful name—one of my favorites for boys—and if you both love it, go for it!
I like [name_m]Marcus[/name_m] and have only met one who is now in his late 20’s.
I also love [name_m]Linus[/name_m] and think [name_m]Silas[/name_m] is nice, though it seems to be getting popular.
[name_m]Magnus[/name_m] is cool too and [name_u]Wallace[/name_u].

If you love [name_m]Marcus[/name_m], go for it! It’s not that popular at all, I don’t know anyone named [name_m]Marcus[/name_m] and can’t even remember for sure if I’ve met one before. He can go by [name_m]Marc[/name_m], [name_m]Marco[/name_m] or another nickname if there really is another boy named [name_m]Marcus[/name_m] in his class. Which may happen with less popular names too- I’m in my 20s and have been in a class with two guys named [name_m]Simon[/name_m].
If you really feel like [name_m]Marcus[/name_m] is too popular though, what about [name_m]Marcel[/name_m] or [name_m]Marius[/name_m]?
[name_m]Just[/name_m] use [name_m]Marcus[/name_m]. The year I was born my name was in the top thirty and in my high school of over two thousand there’s only one or two girls with the same name as me in my grade.
