Althea? Yay or Nay?

I’m liking [name_f]Althea[/name_f]. I like the sound of it and the nn [name_f]Thea[/name_f]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you guys think it sounds nice with [name_f]Isobel[/name_f]? (They would be sisters) Is it too old ladyish or out there? Middle name suggestions or suggestions of other names I might like? We like [name_f]Lydia[/name_f], [name_f]Esme[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f].

It reminds me of [name_f]Althea[/name_f] [name_m]Flynt[/name_m] (wife of the founder of Hustler).

I heard [name_f]Alethea[/name_f] the other day and I much prefer that.

[name_f]Alethea[/name_f] & [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] would be lovely.

I think the [name_f]Thea[/name_f] part of the name gives it freshness. It’s very sweet sounding and I like it with the names you’ve listed for sisters. [name_f]Althea[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] or [name_f]Althea[/name_f] [name_f]Esme[/name_f] would be cute combos if you wanted to put them together.

I like [name_f]Althea[/name_f], and it has great nicknames if it feels too heavy for a little child. [name_f]Thea[/name_f] is a great as a short version, but [name_f]Ally[/name_f]/[name_u]Allie[/name_u] would also be likely to come up, depending on how you feel about that. The only famous [name_f]Althea[/name_f] I know of is tennis star [name_f]Althea[/name_f] [name_m]Gibson[/name_m], who seems like a positive role model.

For me, it’s too tied to the place in Spain where my grandparents go on holiday for three weeks every year.

But I do like the sound, if not for the vacation spot, I would have seriously considered it  And, if it interests you, the name of the title character of [name_f]Tori[/name_f] [name_m]Amos[/name_m]'s musical ‘The [name_m]Light[/name_m] [name_f]Princess[/name_f]’ is [name_f]Althea[/name_f]. I saw it in [name_u]London[/name_u] a couple of years back, it was magical ^^

There’s a greek goddess named [name_f]Athena[/name_f]. I much rather prefer that.

[name_f]Althea[/name_f] is fine.

I like the [name_f]Thea[/name_f] part but not the name.

[name_m]How[/name_m] about just [name_f]Thea[/name_f]? I think it sounds gorgeous with [name_f]Isobel[/name_f].

[name_f]Theodora[/name_f] ‘[name_f]Thea[/name_f]’
[name_f]Athena[/name_f] ‘[name_f]Thea[/name_f]’

Good luck!

I actually know an [name_f]Althea[/name_f] my age (30’s), and I always thought it was a lovely name.

Having the #1 most name of my generation, I was always a little jealous of hers, which reminded me of an elegant Greek goddess. The meaning “wholesome” or “healing” is lovely, too. I actually like it better than the other more popular names you mentioned. I think it goes fine with [name_f]Isobel[/name_f].

I really like [name_f]Althea[/name_f], would love to meet one.
[name_f]Anthea[/name_f] is also pretty.

I think [name_f]Althea[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] sounds lovely! [name_f]Thea[/name_f] is a good nickname, and helps to stand out from the [name_u]Ali[/name_u]/[name_u]Allie[/name_u]/[name_u]Alex[/name_u] club.

[name_f]Susan[/name_f]

Have you heard the name [name_f]Alethea[/name_f]? I think it sounds a little better than [name_f]Althea[/name_f] (imo) and you’d still be able to keep the nn [name_f]Thea[/name_f].

I’d try to be more helpful but I just got up and am way too tired to think, sorry

Thanks for the input, guys! I have heard [name_f]Alethea[/name_f] (on here, not in real life) My only issue with it is that I feel like the nn [name_u]Allie[/name_u] would come up even more for it than for [name_f]Althea[/name_f]. And I’m really not an [name_u]Allie[/name_u] fan.

I prefer [name_f]Althea[/name_f] to [name_f]Alethea[/name_f] for the reason you mentioned – I would want to stay far away from [name_u]Allie[/name_u]! [name_f]Anthea[/name_f] is a great option to consider though (it could conceivably go to [name_f]Annie[/name_f] but I far prefer that to [name_u]Allie[/name_u]). Realistically, though, I think that you pick the nickname you like and that’s what someone gets called. I can’t imagine anyone just calling my friend [name_m]Topher[/name_m] by [name_u]Chris[/name_u], or [name_f]Beth[/name_f] as [name_f]Liz[/name_f]. People are reasonable.

Exactly. I already have an [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] and a few people have tried to called her [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] (not my cup of tea) and we just politely say that we prefer the nickname [name_f]Belle[/name_f]. It wouldn’t be a big deal to do that for [name_f]Althea[/name_f] nn [name_f]Thea[/name_f] I shouldn’t think.

I really like [name_f]Althea[/name_f]! It’s even in my signature  The sound and meaning are both lovely, as is the nn [name_f]Thea[/name_f]. DH is [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], and I like the idea of giving a daughter an"[name_m]Al[/name_m]-" name without going for one of the more obvious derivatives.

Very pretty. I find it earthy.
