My husband and I are having such a hard time deciding on our baby girl’s name these are pretty much the only names we both like so far. He slightly prefers [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f] and I slightly prefer [name_f]Larissa[/name_f]. [name_m]Just[/name_m] wondering which other people prefer?
I think [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f] is a little trendy, but I really don’t like the name [name_f]Larissa[/name_f]. I would go with [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f].
I fear [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f] might sound like [name_f]Tiffany[/name_f] 20 years from now – once trendy, now hopelessly dated.
I think [name_f]Larissa[/name_f] has a lot more substance and will “age” much better. I recommend doing a Google search for Romanian gymnast [name_f]Larisa[/name_f] Iordache. She competed in [name_u]London[/name_u] and is a doll – and tremendously talented. The name [name_f]Larissa[/name_f]/[name_f]Larisa[/name_f] really grew on me after watching her perform.
[name_f]Alyssa[/name_f] feels dated and [name_f]Larissa[/name_f] feels more unusual and fresh. I pick [name_f]Larissa[/name_f].
[name_f]Larissa[/name_f] is chic and sophisticated. [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f] is trendy and lispy. I’m in the [name_f]Larissa[/name_f] camp.
I had an older cousin named [name_f]Larissa[/name_f], and don’t know many women or girls named [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f] despite having gone to an all women’s college and substituting in 7 school districts K-12. I know a handful, but not as many as I would think given the popularity. Neither name feels dated to me. [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f] would fall into what I would call a “contemporary classic,” and it lends itself to [name_f]Aly[/name_f]/[name_u]Allie[/name_u] for a nickname (and Lissy/[name_f]Lyssa[/name_f], too). [name_f]Larissa[/name_f], while uncommon, doesn’t have a straightforward one (not that this is a problem). My cousin has used Lissy or [name_f]Rissa[/name_f], but also is known as [name_m]Lars[/name_m]/Larsie to several folks.
That said I really do like both (I’m no help, I’m sure). What do you like more about [name_f]Larissa[/name_f]? What does your husband like more about [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f]?
I would go with [name_f]Larisa[/name_f] (this spelling, it’s the original )
thanks everyone for the replies
teacherma - although my husband also likes [name_f]Larissa[/name_f], he says he just prefers the was [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f] sounds. My reason for slightly preferring [name_f]Larissa[/name_f] is because it is less popular than [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f]
i have no idea why i’m finding girl names so difficult… my husband and i just have such different tastes in names. for example some of my very favourite names include [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], [name_f]Audrey[/name_f], [name_f]Tessa[/name_f], [name_f]Elise[/name_f]… While my husband’s fav names are [name_f]Melanie[/name_f], [name_f]Melody[/name_f], and [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f] - so very different!
Would Arisa be a good compromise? It’s pronounced like [name_f]Larissa[/name_f] without the L. I have a friend who goes by that as a nickname (it has nothing to do with her real name which she finds too common- top 10 for the year she was born, I think).
Another idea for compromise based on what you mentioned, [name_f]Elissa[/name_f] (Meaning, origin and history of the name Elissa (1) - Behind the Name) which is another name for [name_f]Dido[/name_f], queen of Carthage. Sounds like [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f], but is an uncommon legit name. The only downside is it could be mistaken for a creative spelling.
Or, perhaps, [name_f]Lara[/name_f] [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f], would work as a compromise.
Best of luck with whatever you choose!
[name_f]Larissa[/name_f] is great!
Out of your two, [name_f]Larissa[/name_f]. But I prefer the original [name_f]Larisa[/name_f] prn. la-REEZ-ah.
I prefer [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f] suggestions: [name_f]Melissa[/name_f], [name_f]Felicia[/name_f], [name_f]Lovisa[/name_f] or [name_f]Elysia[/name_f]. Good luck!
[name_f]Larissa[/name_f], [name_f]Larissa[/name_f], [name_f]Larissa[/name_f]! I guess I’m biased though. My first name in [name_f]Larissa[/name_f]. I love my name, though. I’ve always gotten comment on how pretty it is, and I am happy to have a more distinct name. Ironically, my best friends name is [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f]! When we were little I called her Lyss, and she called me Riss lol. I don’t really go by a nickname now, except for Lissy from my dad, and [name_f]Lara[/name_f] from my mom. But trust me, [name_f]Larissa[/name_f] is a great name, and I think it is much more distinct than [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f]. Best of luck!
It’s so great to hear feedback from someone with the name! i’ve never actually met a [name_f]Larissa[/name_f] before, so it’s nice to hear your opinion on you name it is indeed a very pretty and distinct name!!
