Am I overthinking?

So we all know my love for [name_m]Jericho[/name_m]. I’m aware of the biblical reference & don’t consider it an issue as none of my family or friends are religious so it wouldn’t necessarily come up in our circle. However what does concern me is that the Israelis have & use a type of missile named [name_m]Jericho[/name_m]. Please understand that this is NOT a race concern, honestly that’s not my problem at all. I’m more just wondering if this could/should be a concern given the past & current world events?

Also we have links to a [name_f]Royal[/name_f] [name_f]Navy[/name_f] base / town & it’s highly likely we’ll move there in the future, meaning the reference to the missiles could come up.

Am I overthinking this? Would you still use the name or should it be vetoed?

I think you’re ok to use it.

I looked up a list of missile names, and I see [name_m]Skipper[/name_m], [name_m]Maverick[/name_m], [name_m]Falcon[/name_m], [name_m]Sparrow[/name_m], [name_m]Phoenix[/name_m], [name_m]Little[/name_m] [name_m]Joe[/name_m], [name_m]Titan[/name_m], [name_m]Ajax[/name_m], [name_m]Hercules[/name_m], [name_f]Honest[/name_f] [name_m]John[/name_m], [name_m]Hawk[/name_m], [name_m]Roland[/name_m], [name_m]Jupiter[/name_m], [name_m]Thor[/name_m], [name_m]Rafael[/name_m], and [name_m]Perseus[/name_m]. People use these names for babies.

Also, think of the name [name_m]Max[/name_m]. It’s a name, but also a setting, short for “maximum.” It’s on ovens, headphones, Duolingo, etc. But that doesn’t stop people from using it as a name.

I think it’s fine! reckon if anyone is familiar with [name_m]Jericho[/name_m] they will be familial with it as a Biblical reference or as a city name. The missile is obviously a terrible association but it doesn’t seem that prevalent – when I google “Jericho” nothing about the missile shows up, not even when I clicked on the “News” section. I’d personally never heard of it before.

I wouldn’t have known about that, but if you have any friends/family in the base/town, it might be worth asking them if they’d find it odd? Or how often it comes up? It might be my ignorance in not knowing anyone with a military background but I’m not sure if it really would come up in daily conversation?

I wouldn’t worry about it – countless weapons are given human names. Being a history student, I think of the infamous rocket launcher Katyusha as an example – I would not think anything of the nickname Katyusha just because it happens to be a rocket launcher. It has a long history separate from the weapon (which was named after a folk song about a girl named Katyusha).

I also think that the general public doesn’t pay attention to the names of the missiles/types of missiles used in combat. They’re occasionally mentioned in news articles, sure, but I’d say it’s really the destructive capacity and type of weapon (in a more vague sense of “rocket” ,“missile”, or “bomb” etc, rather than specific names) that tends to be more important to people when reading news about that kind of thing. There are a few well-known weapons/warplanes that I’d consider exceptions, but overall I don’t think missile/other weapon names are that commonly recognized.

I suppose if you’re living on a naval base it might be different? But I still doubt anyone would think anything of it. Especially when there is the much more obvious association of the Biblical city.

I’d use the name.
