Amalia or Aurelia?

These two tie on polls constantly, and I love love both (that’s not a typo lol). They are high contenders and I have decided I can’t have an Aurelia and an Amalia  Which do you prefer and why? What vibes do these give off? Pros and Cons?

My thoughts

Aurelia- Pros: I think Aurelia sounds beautiful and stands out from other A names. I feel that this name strikes the perfect balance of unique and trendy, I think a lot of new parents might not have an Aurelia, but might have seen it before. Cons: It took me a little bit to memorize how to spell Aurelia. I have dyslexia, and I had to practice spelling it over and over. Im also concerned it will be the next Aurora (popularity-wise.)

Amalia- Pros: Amalia is easy to say, easy to spell, and overall, I think a really approachable, down-to-earth name that could be wearable by a lot of personalities. At the same time, I find it to be an evocative and distinctive name (just like Aurelia). Cons: Honestly, my only wish is that Amelia wasn’t so popular.

Both names work great in English and Spanish and work great with my lo’s name, as well as the other names in the family.

I think it will be great to hear your thoughts!!
Thanks in advance :sparkles:

This is tough as I really like both. I do think [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] would require spelling/pronunciation corrections regularly (I can think of a few ways to pronounce it), but [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] is likely to be mistaken for [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] at least occasionally. They’ve also had extremely similar popularity trajectories in the US.

Overall, I think I’d choose [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] as it seems a bit more distinctive and less likely to blend with the very popular Amelia/Emilia, but you really can’t go wrong!

I prefer [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] - beautiful sound (regardless of which pn you use) and a wonderful meaning. It’s bright, charming and lovely. While I do think it will rise in popularity, I think the Amelia/Amalia connection would bother me more. Still, [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] is a lovely name, slightly rugged, versatile and easy to spell, and you can’t go wrong with it

Both are exceptionally gorgeous names and not insanely popular yet. I like [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] better but share your concerns over it.

I prefer the meaning of [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] but the pronunciation of [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] (when pronounced uh-marl-ee-uh) if you’re pronouncing Amma-lee-uh then I would vote [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f]

Yeah, I agree. I see Aurelia becoming more well-known over the next few years but Amalia is likely to constantly get mixed up with hyper-popular Amelia. Aurelia also has such a nice meaning!

@Etymology Im going with the 1st pronunciation

That’s another thing: I only like one pronunciation of [name_f]Amalia[/name_f], but both pronunciations of [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f].

I really prefer Amalia!!! I find it distinct enough from [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. I don’t particularly like [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] as i find it too awkward to say

@judy.newstead I honestly didn’t think [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] was connected to [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] until I read the name berry page.

@coffeeorangecats I feel the same way! I find both very lovely.

Amalia! She feels a lot warmer, softer, & cozier. Aurelia is a bit difficult for me to say.

I love [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] (especially with the nn Molly)! [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] has to many pronunciations for me (ar-eh-lee-uh, uh-ray-lee-uh, or-ree-lee-uh)

Definitely [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] for me! :sparkles: It’s so distinctive, beautiful, and such a bright name. :sun_with_face: I don’t mind any way that it’s pronounced bc they’re all wonderful to me. I also prefer how [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] sounds in Spanish.

[name_f]Amalia[/name_f] is a great name, but feels a bit clunkier. Plus I don’t like how it could be mixed up with [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. That’s part of the reason for me taking [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] off of my own list.

Technically, you can’t go wrong if you truly love both, but I just think [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] has so much more going for it! :purple_heart:

[name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] gives me more bold, warm colors, fire energy and [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] is more mysterious, cool tones, water energy. Both are beautiful but if I have to pick between them I would probably lean towards [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] because [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] feels like it would get mistaken for [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] a lot.

In English I prefer Amalia; it sounds sophisticated yet approachable. Aurelia has too many different pronunciations (of which I only like O-ree-lee-uh) and it mostly makes me think of the word “oral”.

I prefer [name_f]Amalia[/name_f]. It’s such a nice & spunky name and I think it stands out against the popularity of [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], which also makes it seem more familiar.

@readingclaygirl That’s a good way to put it. I definitely like the familiar feeling I get from Amalia!

@VioletMoon Your comment on Aurelia reminds me of this quote from Jessie Burton: “You are sunlight through a window, which I stand in, warmed. My darling.”

I love the idea of [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f], but pronunciation seems to be pretty inconsistent and I pronounce it incorrectly half the time .
I like that [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] still has that noble feel and is more down to earth than [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f].
