Amaya

I only recently discovered this name, and I think it’s lovely!

A few questions for you berries - 1. [name]How[/name] would you pronounce it? A-may-uh or A-my-uh? I’m not entirely sure how it’s supposed to be pronounced. And 2. What are your opinions of the name? [name]Do[/name] you like it?

I’m currently considering [name]Amaya[/name] [name]Frances[/name] [name]Ellen[/name]. Any suggestions/improvements would be welcome!

Thanks

I’m only familiar with it being pronounced Uh-MY-Uh. Like [name]Maya[/name] with an extra letter. I’ve always thought it was very pretty. It’s currently ranked #226 in the social security database.

I actually perfer [name]Amiah[/name] (uh-my-uh)

I love [name]Amaya[/name] [name]Frances[/name] [name]Ellen[/name]. (Uh-My-Uh) I also like [name]Amaya[/name] [name]Ellen[/name] [name]Frances[/name] or just [name]Maya[/name] [name]Frances[/name] [name]Ellen[/name]. All three are great!

[name]Amaya[/name] (ah-MY-ah) is a Spanish/Basque surname which means “a high place” or “the end” and also a Japanese name with the meaning of “night rain” so it’s multicultural!!! I’ve seen the spelling [name]Amaia[/name] as well. I think it’s pretty and exotic.

[name]Amaya[/name] is beautiful… [name]Glad[/name] you are thinking about using it. [name]Amaya[/name] [name]Frances[/name] [name]Ellen[/name] is pretty. Something else you could consider would be [name]Amaya[/name] [name]Violet[/name] or [name]Amaya[/name] [name]Iris[/name]. [name]Just[/name] putting it out there!

I think this is a beautiful name, and it’s not too hard to say even if your go to another country. I say it with the “my” sound in the middle.

I love [name]Amaya[/name]! I think it’s really sweet, and I love the Basque reference. I’m kinda a sucker for Basque names. I pronounce it ah-MY-ah, not ah-[name]MAY[/name]-ah… I love it so much I almost considered it as a MN for my favorite name ([name]Isabelle[/name] [name]Amaya[/name] [name]Grace[/name])!

[name]Amaya[/name] [name]Frances[/name] [name]Ellen[/name] is nice, but I don’t love it for some reason… [name]Amaya[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Ellen[/name] would be really pretty, though! That’s really the only thought I had–or [name]Amaya[/name] [name]Lydia[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name]?

Good luck!

I think [name]Amaya[/name] is a lovely name. I’d never heard it until last year when I met someone with this name. She pronounced it “uh-MY-uh” and I think she spelled it differently as well.

[name]Amaya[/name] [name]Frances[/name] [name]Ellen[/name] is a bit off to me. What about [name]Amaya[/name] [name]Eleanor[/name] [name]Frances[/name]?

I really like [name]Amaya[/name] and it was on our short list for the girl we are currently expecting.

I have a personal connection to Japan as I lived there when I was younger and have always wanted to go back. [name]Amaya[/name] is one of a few Japanese names that also work in an English speaking culture (too many Japanese names sound, well, just VERY Japanese, so I don’t think they can ‘work’ in English, especially for someone like me who doesn’t have any Japanese heritage).

I like the spelling, both meanings (the Basque and Japanese), and think it sounds absolutely lovely. I think it gives a bit of a fresh spin on [name]Maya[/name] (which is quite popular now I think). I don’t know why, but I’ve never liked [name]Maya[/name], but I do really like [name]Amaya[/name]. Also, from what I know of the Japanese language, I would agree with everyone who has commented on [name]Amaya[/name] being pronounced ‘Uh-my-uh’.

I don’t think we are going to use this for our next daughter for a couple reasons:

  1. There are many “A” names that DH and I like and our two daughters both already have “A” names. While some people think we should keep giving our babies “A” names, having more than two children with the same initial seems too cutsey for me and it was never our intent to start an “A” theme. It just happened that way.

  2. I am a bit worried that an [name]Amaya[/name] might get mixed up with [name]Maya[/name] I imagine my daughter introducing herself to people saying “[name]Hi[/name], I’m [name]Amaya[/name]”, “[name]Maya[/name]?”, “No, [name]Amaya[/name]”. Might not be as big a deal as it seems to me right now, but that is one hesitation I’ve had with the name.

  3. It is also growing in popularity and would be, if we chose it, the most popular name (according to the stats) of any of our girls. It’s still not in the top 100, and I’ve never met one, so it might not be that popular where we are.

Anyways, all that to say that DH and I both really like this name. It seems to get mixed reviews here on Nameberry as some people see it as trendy. I was glad to see a post about it and so many favourable comments too!

My daughters are already calling our soon to be born DD#3 [name]Eloise[/name], so I think we’re pretty set on that name (I’m thinking it might be hard for us to change our minds at this point since they are already calling her by this name), but I think we’re keeping [name]Amaya[/name] as a back-up (albeit a fairly distant second choice) just in case our baby just doesn’t seem like an [name]Eloise[/name] once she’s born.

@countryrunner - I adore your suggestion of [name]Amaya[/name] [name]Violet[/name]! Absolutely gorgeous!!

@ashthedreamer - I know what you mean, I think [name]Amaya[/name] [name]Frances[/name] [name]Ellen[/name] is possibly a little plain but it was just one of my initial thoughts - it often takes me a while to get to my favourite combo  [name]Amaya[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Ellen[/name] is lovely, thanks for the suggestion!

@agirlinred - I can’t use [name]Eleanor[/name] in any way as it is my number number number one girls name and I’m saving it for a first name, but the suggestion is lovely nonetheless!

@bb2duesoon - I’m the same as you with not liking [name]Maya[/name] but loving [name]Amaya[/name], it’s strange how much difference one letter can make! That is a very good point about people thinking she’s called [name]Maya[/name] though, that could be potentially extremely frustrating for a little girl. I, too, thought it might be seen as trendy, but (although I only recently discovered the name) [name]Amaya[/name] seems fairly classic for some reason to me! By the way, [name]Eloise[/name] is just lovely, so congrats

Another question for you all: Does [name]Amaya[/name] seem too exotic to be used on an English, pale skinned child? I picture an olive skinned child when I hear [name]Amaya[/name] so I’m curious as to whether it’d seem mismatched - maybe I’m overthinking things!

I think [name]Amaya[/name] would be fine on a pale English girl, lol. The [name]Amaya[/name] I knew was black but I could easily see the name on a girl of any race. I’ve met blonde-haired, blue-eyed, fair-skinned girls named [name]Maya[/name] so [name]Amaya[/name] wouldn’t phase me.
