Ambrose

I’ve loved this handsome little guy for a long time, so thought I’d reach out for some opinions on the name from others – so, what do you think of [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m]?

Recently I took my love of [name_u]Ari[/name_u], bounced it around with [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] and GP [name_m]Arrow[/name_m] and came up with the idea of calling [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] ‘[name_m]Aro[/name_m]’ as nickname…thoughts on that arrangement?

Also, what do you think of [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] as little brother to [name_m]Emrys[/name_m]? There’s that repeated ‘m’ sound, but it doesn’t feel too much to me - [name_f]Em[/name_f]- is short and quick and Am- is longer in sound, not so similar in my own mind/accent.

Lastly, which do you prefer: [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] or [name_u]August[/name_u]?

Thank you in advance for any brave enough to engage in such an interrogation!

I like [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m]! I think it’s a great way to get the nickname you want, and I think it pairs perfectly with [name_m]Emrys[/name_m]. I guess I’d be more likely to use [name_u]August[/name_u], but I’d love to meet an [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m]!

I love [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] but…[name_m]Emrys[/name_m] is a variation of it, I suppose?

I don’t mind [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m], but [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] is the Welsh variant of [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m]. It would be like naming two daughters [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. Same name, but different usage.

Ahh yes, the two versions of the same name thing. I should have known name enthusiasts would pick up on that quick smart! I suppose I always liked the idea of the link between the two without it being overly obvious - I do always seem to keep [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] in the middle though, so perhaps part of me does feel they are too much for brothers.

I just wonder how many non-name/Arthurian-enthusiast type people would pick up on the [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] and [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] connection?

I think [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] sounds like a snooty prince character. I also think of [name_f]Ambrosia[/name_f] custard. [name_u]August[/name_u] is a much more wearable and flexible choice. He could be a business man or a BMX Biker; Auggie or [name_u]Gus[/name_u]. What would the award winning rapper [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] think of his name?

I love [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m], very handsome. I also love [name_m]Emrys[/name_m]. But, I wouldn’t use the names for brothers. [name_f]Non[/name_f]-name enthusiasts may not realise they are variations of the same name but I think the sounds are extremely close. The Am and [name_f]Em[/name_f] sounds are similar and, when said fast, rose and rys sound are almost the same to me.
I find it easier to picture [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] as an actual person than [name_u]August[/name_u] and I don’t like month names, though I do like nn [name_u]Gus[/name_u], so I prefer [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m].

I’m not sure about nn [name_m]Aro[/name_m], it’s nice that it combines names you love but it doesn’t see to be a very intuitive nn and I am not generally a fan of nns that are a bit of a stretch. I can’t think of any alternative nns though…
