Amelia prn A-meh-lee-ah? :S

I’ve always heard [name]Amelia[/name] prn [name]Ah[/name]-mee-lia and never thought it’s prn any other way but I just met a girl today (age 9) who pronounces her name [name]Ah[/name]-meh-lee-ah (more of a soft ehh than a long ‘ee’ on the second syllable and emphasis on the ‘ee’ sound on the third syllable) but it’s spelled the same as [name]Amelia[/name]… It just struck me as very very odd :S.
I wondered if anybody else had encountered it? What do you think of it? Have you ever met anybody else you pronounced a traditional/well known name completely differently despite spelling the same, ee an [name]Emily[/name] who pronounces it Eee-mily or Eh-my-lee?
[name]Just[/name] curious

I’ve always pronounced it “ah-MEEL-yah” a la aviator [name]Amelia[/name] [name]Earhart[/name]. I do know that other European cultures pronounce it differently. Was the little girl of some other descent than English, I wonder?

I don’t think so. Well, we’re in [name]Wales[/name] but we prn [name]Amelia[/name] the same as the English. She goes to the local Welsh Medium Education school which is very unusual for somebody who isn’t from a Welsh background.

I’ve never heard of an [name]Amelia[/name] who pronounces her name like that, but I do know that the name [name]Amelie[/name] (which is the French version of [name]Amelia[/name]) is pronounced [name]Ah[/name]-muh-lee. To me, that French pronunciation is very similar to A-meh-lee-ah. Maybe her parents have some French background? Or maybe they just liked that pronunciation?

ive always said Amel-ya but think its very pretty when ppl slow it down and say [name]Ame[/name]-lee-uh…i know a lot of hispanic ppl and they say a-meh-lee-ah, so maybe she was of hispanic origin??

[name]Ah[/name]-meh-lee-ah would be the Spanish pronunciation. My reference? Spanish class  And I think the name is very pretty either way, although pronouncing it ah-meh-lee-ah might encounter pronunciation issues, at least in the U.S., given the much more common ah-mee-lee-ah pronunciation. The little girl would probably have to correct people a lot.

There is the related name [name]Amalia[/name] which can be [name]Ah[/name] MAHL ee a or [name]Ah[/name] mahl EE a, that doesn’t quite sound like what you’re describing especially if you saw it written [name]Amelia[/name], but maybe? But yes, other than that, it sounds like a Spanish prn maybe. All best!
