So we’ve decided to go with Amelia! I’m very excited because I love this name. Even in all the ways it could be pronounced. But I definitely do prefer it to be 4 syllables instead of 3 with “yuh”. I think “ee-uh” at the end is prettier and lends the name better to the nickname we’ll be using (Mia).

I’m just curious how you say it and how you think must pronounce it. Seems to me like a lot of Americans say “uh-meel-yuh” while more British people say “uh-mee-lee-uh”. Perhaps we could take the middle of the road and pronounce “uh-meel-ee-uh” to get the 4 syllables and “ee-uh” ending I like? Would also love other thoughts in comments if you have any.

i’ll be honest, i can’t quite figure the difference between uh-mee-lee-uh and uh-meel-ee-uh. even the -yuh version is similar enough that i’m certain the pronunciations would come out interchangeably. (and for what it’s worth, i’m english )

Congratulations!! I think you’ve decided on a beautiful name and nickname. I also quite prefer the 4 syllable pronounciation, but once more people hear you pronounce it, I think it’s something they can definitely get used to (unless they’re talking fast)

Yes this was kind of my thought, all of them, even the “yuh” ending, sounds similar enough so it’s not a huge deal! Was mainly curious after pondering the several ways one could pronounce it haha.

Ah-meel-ee-ah

This name is very well-known. I think pronunciation will come down to your regional dialect more so than anything. Where you live, there will probably be one version that trumps the rest.

I love Amelia! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: I think I say it somewhere between uh-MEEL-yuh and uh-MEEL-ee-uh–it definitely doesn’t quite have four syllables to me, but it’s not an even three either.

It can be hard to hear the difference. But maybe this description makes more sense:

Uh-meel-ee-uh is more like saying [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] as oh-liv-ee-uh

Uh-mee-lee-uh is more like saying [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] as soe-fee-uh

The ee-uh part is separate instead of connecting it to the previous letter.

@rosepip I agree with Sarah. And honestly, I DO hear the difference in my voice recording, I just listen to this.
