I like both these names a lot but each as some problems that I need to work through. Would love some input if you have some time!
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f]
Pros: I like this spelling enough. DH likes it better than with an E. nn [name_f]Milly[/name_f]
Cons: association with [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] Bedilia. I can hear the taunts now. Does anyone else make that immediate association? Pretty common name and I’d like to find something less popular, but I do really like the name so I could get over this issue
[name_f]Emilia[/name_f]
Pros: I really like this spelling, nn [name_f]Emmie[/name_f] or something similar. At least when spelled, no obvious Bedilia issue. Seems a little less popular than with an A.
Cons: DH does not like the spelling. Obvious reference to region in [name_f]Italy[/name_f].
I used to prefer [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], but the more I see both names, especially side by side, the more I like [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]. I think I’d go with the E spelling because:
It’s slightly less common
[name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] cred
You can use [name_f]Milly[/name_f]/[name_f]Millie[/name_f] and [name_f]Emmy[/name_f]/[name_f]Emmie[/name_f] ([name_f]Emilia[/name_f] nn [name_f]Milly[/name_f] actually makes more sense than [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] nn [name_f]Milly[/name_f]; “mil” vs. “mel”)
I think you’re going to hear [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] [name_f]Bedelia[/name_f] references regardless of which spelling you choose. Which isn’t a bad thing; I can’t really see kids using it to taunt an [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]/[name_f]Emilia[/name_f]. She’s a beloved children’s character whose only flaw is that she’s kind of a ditz. A weak insult at best, and hardly the type of thing to be scarred for life over.
Thanks! Good points all. And yes I should have included the Shakespearean reference as a pro for sure. But yeah, the fact that [name_f]Ameila[/name_f] B. is a bit of an an airhead is somewhat concerning. [name_u]Boo[/name_u]. . . . But it is a book for preschoolers so hopefully any potential taunting would be limited to the early years.
I prefer [name_f]Emilia[/name_f].
I also really like [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] but to me they’re different names with different pronunciations.
And while this might not concern you at all, I try to go with the name/spelling that, when used internationally, sounds similar to my own pronunciation. In this case [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] as [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] is pronounced differently in most (European/South American) languages.
I also prefer [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] because I’m not a fan of the rather intuitive nickname [name_f]Amy[/name_f] for [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]- at all.
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f]! It is so lovely and classic. I don’t get the move to [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]. And what’s do bad about [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] [name_f]Bedelia[/name_f]?
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], but please don’t subject her to ‘mealy [name_f]Milly[/name_f]’. [name_f]Milly[/name_f]'s about the most detestable nickname I’ve ever heard for a precious girl. [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] is alright, but sounds a bit OCD next to the freer, happier [name_f]Amelia[/name_f].
It’s the most common spelling so she won’t have to constantly correct people
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f] [name_f]Bedelia[/name_f] is really not that iconic of a figure. I’ve heard of the connection, but it’s certainly not the first place my mind goes. And honestly, [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] [name_f]Bedelia[/name_f] taunts just as readily. I don’t get how the spelling change would make that big a difference on this factor.
There are SOOOOOO many [name_f]Em[/name_f]- names out there. They feel ubiquitous and overwhelming. [name_f]Emily[/name_f], [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Emme[/name_f], [name_f]Emmy[/name_f], [name_f]Emilie[/name_f], [name_f]Emiliana[/name_f], and tons of spelling variations therewith. So saying it’s ‘less popular’ than [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] is a bit of a misnomer to me.
I prefer the nn [name_f]Milly[/name_f]/[name_f]Millie[/name_f]. It’s cute and more unique than [name_f]Emmie[/name_f]
I prefer [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]. I’ve never even heard of [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] B…I think of [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] [name_f]Earhart[/name_f]. I love [name_f]Emmie[/name_f]/[name_f]Emi[/name_f] so much more than [name_f]Milly[/name_f] and I feel it’s a tad bit more unique.
I too see these two names as different (I’m European, mind you)… I prefer [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], mostly because it’s not as popular as [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] and [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m]… and, BECAUSE of [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] Romagna (you listed it in the “cons” for your husband) – it’s one of the most beautiful regions in [name_f]Italy[/name_f] and it has the best food in an otherwise pretty amazing country foodwise! So for me it makes the name even more appealing, for some reason…
But both names are lovely! And like a previous poster, [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] for me is immediately reminiscent of [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] [name_f]Earhart[/name_f], not [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] B….
[name_m]Ah[/name_m], and on a side note, have you considered [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] as an alternative?
I love both. [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] i see a sassy and spunky, and [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] i see as more beautiful and sophisticated. I’ve also seen the nickname [name_f]Mila[/name_f] for [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], tho that may be a stretch for you.
Personally I don’t like [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]. I know it’s supposed to be a soundalike to [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], but I always accidentally pronounce it like “[name_f]Emma[/name_f]-leah” in my head and have to mentally correct myself.
I prefer [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. I thought [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] was more popular as it’s a variant of [name_f]Emily[/name_f], but I guess I was mistaken. Where I come from [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] was very popular, and [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] sounded more like classic - royal style - beautiful and underused girls name. I don’t know the association of [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] [name_f]Bedelia[/name_f] (?) and all I can think of is [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] [name_f]Earhart[/name_f] (aviator) and Amélie from the movie (same title).
I’m not really a fan of either but if I had to choose I would go with [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. I don’t even know who [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] Bedilia is
[name_f]Milly[/name_f]/[name_f]Melly[/name_f] is a cute NN I think. [name_f]My[/name_f] friend with an [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] calls her [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] or [name_f]Mia[/name_f]…
I used to prefer [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], but now I’m loving [name_f]Emilia[/name_f]. I just like the look of it better and I love [name_f]Em[/name_f] names, so that’s probably why I love it more. If I were to use either name I’d use [name_f]Mia[/name_f] as a nickname. You really can’t go wrong with either. I used to read the [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] [name_f]Bedelia[/name_f] books as a little kid, but that’s definitely not the first thing I think of when I see [name_f]Amelia[/name_f].
