Amiyah vs. Aniyah

I really love both of these names and their respective spellings, but can’t decide which I’d rather use.

Amiyah (ah-my-ah) appears to have differing roots - some sources say it’s a Japanese name meaning “night rain” in this spelling, and others say it’s a Spanish name meaning “end”.

Aniyah (ah-ny-ah) appears to be a variation on [name_f]Anna[/name_f] (someone please correct me if I’m wrong here!) which means “grace” and would technically honour family for me.

Both names rank currently in the US, with [name_f]Amiyah[/name_f] at #297 and [name_f]Aniyah[/name_f] at #290.

Which one do you prefer for me?

Thank you!!

Amiyah is seems to be a weird twist on [name_f]Amaya[/name_f]. Please save here the trouble & just name her [name_f]Amaya[/name_f] if you like that.

There’s an [name_f]Aniyah[/name_f] in my class at school and I’ve always thought her name was so pretty!

I agree with @ITheNameaholic. [name_f]Amaya[/name_f] is gorgeous, or [name_f]Amaia[/name_f]. [name_f]Amiyah[/name_f] and [name_f]Aniyah[/name_f] look very made up and trendy

I don’t like [name_f]Amaya[/name_f], so I’ll be sticking with [name_f]Amiyah[/name_f], thank you. I don’t mind “made up and trendy” either, most of my list falls under that.

Ooh, i really like both of these! I think the gentle yet bold [name_f]Amiyah[/name_f] wins slightly

I prefer [name_f]Amiyah[/name_f] but assumed it’s pronounced ah-mee-ya before opening the thread, if that bothers you.

I like both, and I think both fit with your list, but I prefer the sound of [name_f]Amiyah[/name_f]. I recently learned [name_f]Amaia[/name_f] means “halo” or “lunar rainbow” in Maori, which is a lovely connection.

(I study Japanese and while あまや ([name_f]Amaya[/name_f]) could mean “night rain” in Japanese if written as 雨夜, it appears to be extremely rare and [name_f]Amaya[/name_f] (with a different spelling) is more common as a surname).

I have encountered many kids named variants of [name_f]Amiyah[/name_f] and [name_f]Aniyah[/name_f] (and those spellings too!). These are beautiful sounding names and I think can be spelled many ways.

Amiyah I have also seen spelled [name_f]Amaya[/name_f] and [name_f]Amya[/name_f]. [name_f]Aniyah[/name_f] I have also seen spelled [name_f]Ania[/name_f].

You could also consider [name_f]Aaliyah[/name_f] ([name_f]Alia[/name_f], [name_f]Aliyah[/name_f], etc) or even [name_f]Tamia[/name_f] (Tamiyah it could also be spelled should you so desire).

Hmm, I dont know if it does or not, but that is good to know! Thank you!!

ooh the “halo” meaning is gorgeous!! I wasn’t sure on what [name_f]Amaya[/name_f]'s roots were, it seems to be a bit convoluted :stuck_out_tongue: Thank you for clearing that up!

Thank you!! We have [name_f]Aliyah[/name_f] on our list as well, actually!
