I’m not sure where or when - or, frankly, why- but I’ve recently become very interested in names. I’m not sure if it’s because of my love of English and words in general, or if I have such a severe case of senioritis that I’ll do anything to find a distraction, but names have been occupying my thoughts a lot lately. And given my love of reading, it’s really no surprise that I’m drawn to literary names.
For the past year or so, I’ve been utterly obsessed with 1920s literature, especially [name]Fitzgerald[/name] and [name]Hemingway[/name]. Heminway’s names are a bit bland and boring- but hey, I guess that was part of his straightforward and honest style. But [name]Fitzgerald[/name]'s names are great!
I recently finished reading This Side of Paradise, [name]Fitzgerald[/name]'s debut novel, and I’ve been thinking a lot of the protagonist’s name- [name]Amory[/name] [name]Blaine[/name]. I know that the name [name]Blaine[/name] has inspired others in popular culture (Pretty in [name]Pink[/name], Glee), all white, rich and preppy guys. I don’t love the name, and I think Glee has definitely ruined it, at least for the foreseeable future.
[name]Amory[/name], on the other hand, has been left pretty much untouched. Part of that is probably due to the pronunciation. I say AM-oh-ree, but I know some say AY-more-ee. But putting pronunciation issues aside, what do you think of the name? I love it because of the character, but I’m not sure how usable it would be these days. Is it better off as a middle?
By the way, I’m not pregnant, and won’t be having kids for quite a while. I’m only 18 and about to go to college. So this is more of a hypothetical/ more-fun-than-homework question.
[name]Welcome[/name] to Nameberry! I do like [name]Amory[/name] but I’m not too crazy about [name]Blaine[/name]. I pronounce it “AY-mur-ee” so [name]Amory[/name] [name]Blaine[/name] has too much “ay” sound in it. The only issue: [name]Amory[/name] is very similar to [name]Avery[/name], [name]Emery[/name] and [name]Aubrey[/name] which are now largely female names so I wouldn’t be surprised if [name]Amory[/name] begins to appear on girls lists in the future. So far, it’s staying on the boys side but I don’t know how long that will last! [name]Ah[/name], there’s nothing like a love of literature to spur on a naming obsession!
Thank you, [name]Mischa[/name]! I’m glad I found Nameberry. I think it will satiate my name obsession quite nicely. I had thought about the similarity of [name]Amory[/name] to many names that are becoming popular for girls, but I really hope [name]Amory[/name] doesn’t follow the trend. I can’t image it on a little girl. It just seems so very boy to me. Thanks again!
Reeseemilia, I’m not entirely sure how I feel about it either. I mean, I love the character, but do I love the name? I’m not sure. Thanks!
My nine year old son is [name]Amory[/name] [name]Blaine[/name]. (Pronounce Ay-mor-ee)
We absolutely love the name and so does he! We’ve never had any problems with teasing or ridicule; only the occasional mispronunciation (people tend to hear ‘[name]Emory[/name]’ or ‘[name]Avery[/name]’ instead.)
We have not yet come across any other children with the name.
I don’t think Glee ruined [name]Blaine[/name], actually I like it better because of Glee! I love [name]Amory[/name] I don’t think he would be mistaken as a girl name.
I think it’s pretty cute, and I certainly don’t see anything feminine about it but then again I love [name]Aubrey[/name] and [name]Avery[/name] for boys. I think it definitely depends on where you like, I’m in the UK and this sort of name is very much considered masculine. I actually prefer the AM-oh-ree pronuncation, which sounds stronger to me. Ay-more-ee isn’t bad though. I like [name]Emery[/name] too, which is still a boy’s name to me.
Old thread, I know. But I was up messing around and felt like adding. [name_f]My[/name_f] son’s name is [name_u]Amory[/name_u] [name_m]John[/name_m]. Ay-More-ee (unless I’m lazy and then it’s more like Aim-ree). [name_u]Avery[/name_u] is both boy or girl equally in our town. And it’s not my favorite at all. Not sure if it’s getting too popular or if I just don’t like the sound. But [name_u]Emery[/name_u] is full on boy name to me. But, it’s also a street name here. We have had a lot of mispronunciations in the last 12 years. The weirdest to me is Armory. We laugh and say, “Yes, we store guns in our kid.” Am-or-ee is the most common. He’s had the name for nearly 13 years and I don’t see a lot of others with it. I recently saw a girl named Amorye on facebook that’s about his age in this town. Not sure how how she says it as she goes to one of the other schools.
We liked the name and thought it sounded like an artsy name for someone musical and he’s definitely musical. But he goes by AJ a lot.
