[name_f]My[/name_f] partner is very against using family names/honor names, which usually wouldn’t be a problem for me… however, if current baby is a sticky one, it will be due around my late grandmother’s birthday. I had a dream about this months ago where said grandma was adamant about honoring her name if we were to have a baby & for me that’s a sign.
So can y’all make some suggestions of honor names that don’t scream honor names in this case?
Name to be honored: [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Patricia[/name_f]
Her maiden name isn’t a great one otherwise I’d sneak that in as an option lol
I think any [name_f]Mar[/name_f]- name could work! [name_m]Or[/name_m] a traditional [name_f]Mary[/name_f] nickname that’s not obvious like [name_f]Molly[/name_f] or [name_f]Polly[/name_f].
I tried to suggest some that are less obviously connected to [name_f]Mary[/name_f] (as opposed to [name_f]Marie[/name_f] or [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] for example) so it’s more subtle.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you know if your baby is a boy or a girl?
[name_f]Ary[/name_f] would be nice for a boy!

I’m not a big fan of using the exact name myself, but maybe variants could work?
Any names with [name_f]Mar[/name_f] or [name_f]Ary[/name_f] sound could work, IMO.
[name_m]Or[/name_m] even less obvious route… [name_f]Patricia[/name_f] means noble, so:
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Adeline[/name_f]
[name_f]Adalia[/name_f]
[name_f]Audrey[/name_f]
[name_f]Patricia[/name_f] means noble so you could go with any name of the same meaning. [name_f]Alice[/name_f] or [name_f]Alicia[/name_f] work well. [name_f]Audrey[/name_f] would be lovely as well. [name_f]Patience[/name_f] sounds like a perfect substitute for [name_f]Patricia[/name_f].
[name_f]Love[/name_f] the suggestion of matching initials.
In place of [name_f]Mary[/name_f] I love [name_f]May[/name_f] or [name_f]Molly[/name_f].
[name_f]May[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f] or [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f]
[name_f]Mercy[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f]
Unfortunately the city she was born in 1. doesn’t have a good name option and 2. shares a name with the city my partner and I currently live in. So that’s out lol
Would you consider naming the child something related to your grandma’s interests/personality, or would that not be enough of an honour?
E.g. my grandma had the most amazing garden which she practically lived in, so I’d consider names such as [name_f]Anthea[/name_f] (flowery), [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f], [name_f]Flora[/name_f], [name_f]Chloe[/name_f] etc a potential honour to her in a sense, through meaning.
Otherwise [name_f]Ada[/name_f] is another name meaning noble/nobility, although it sounds nothing like [name_f]Patricia[/name_f]. [name_m]Or[/name_m] if you look at the meaning of [name_f]Mary[/name_f] as ‘bitter sea’, there are loads of other names with sea on the meaning, like (I think!) [name_f]Mira[/name_f], [name_f]Nerissa[/name_f], [name_f]Morgan[/name_f], [name_m]Irving[/name_m]?
Marian
(Some of these could be middles?)
Mora
Naomi
Mara❤️
Mona
Trisha
There are a whole bunch of names that mean noble like Patricia! Ex:
Adela
Alice
Freya
For me personally, indirect honours are far more meaningful when they are about the person, rather than a tenuous version of their name that isn’t their actual name. For eg, fave flower / gemstone / bird / animal (for eg [name_f]Orpah[/name_f] or [name_f]Ayelet[/name_f] mean fawn / deer, [name_f]Oona[/name_f] means lamb, [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] is horse lover) or birth flower or gemstone, birth month, or something related to their hobbies or something they loved, for example [name_f]Sylva[/name_f] / [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] if they loved woodland walks, [name_f]Fable[/name_f] if they loved stories, [name_f]Odela[/name_f] if they loved music or singing, [name_f]Aysel[/name_f] / [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] / [name_f]Diana[/name_f] / [name_f]Luna[/name_f] etc if they loved the moon, [name_f]Asherah[/name_f] / [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] etc if they loved the sea (sea meanings would also tie in with the meaning of Mary). [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] or something meaning [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] eg [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] and variants (my fave is Magali) could be a sweet nod - as [name_f]Mary[/name_f] has a sea meaning, and pearls are formed from the sea So your daughter is your precious gem, derived from / descended from / shaped by your grandmother .
If you want an honour from her actual names which I’d understand because of your dream, you have an excellent source name in [name_f]Mary[/name_f] that gives a plethora of variations, many examples of which you’ve already had but my favourites are -
[name_f]Magdalene[/name_f] / [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f] is also a name obviously very closely linked to [name_f]Mary[/name_f], and shares the bitter meaning.
Sorry, realised I’ve completely assumed the baby is a girl - I’m not as good with boys names but there are plenty of [name_f]Mar[/name_f]- ones that you’ve had lots of examples of already, or perhaps birth month or a variant might be suitable. The sea meaning also introduces lots of scope.
