An I Name that isn't Ivy

I would’ve suggested [name_u]Ivory[/name_u] or [name_f]Iona[/name_f]

A lot of great I name ideas like [name_f]Ione[/name_f] and [name_f]Imogen[/name_f], but it might be time to think more expansively. [name_m]Irving[/name_m] has such a great meaning offering so many directions to go in --it means green river or sea friend. So you can find a name that means green or water or friend. [name_u]River[/name_u] is a wonderful idea and it shares a lot of sounds with [name_m]Irving[/name_m], but names that mean green have a lot of fantastic entries: Names That Mean Green | Nameberry. There’s [name_f]Esme[/name_f] (someone mentioned [name_f]Isme[/name_f] and there’s also [name_f]Ismay[/name_f]), [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f], [name_f]India[/name_f]…hmmmm, [name_f]India[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Iva[/name_f] but if [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] is off the table, Im guessing [name_f]Iva[/name_f] isn’t an option either. Could [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] be a middle maybe? I like the initials I and V for honoring [name_m]Irv[/name_m].

Valentina [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Valencia[/name_f] [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f] [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Victoria[/name_f] [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Ines[/name_f]

Or the reverse:

Isabel [name_f]Vera[/name_f]
[name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_f]Verity[/name_f]
[name_f]Idalie[/name_f] [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f]
[name_f]Ines[/name_f] [name_f]Valencia[/name_f]
[name_u]Indigo[/name_u] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f]

There are so many amazing I names suggested here! Have you considered [name_f]Minerva[/name_f]? It has the sound of “[name_m]Irv[/name_m]” with NN potential for [name_f]Minnie[/name_f], [name_f]Evie[/name_f], even [name_f]Neve[/name_f].

I looked at the page for [name_m]Irv[/name_m] here on Nameberry and it said the meaning was “handsome, fair of face.” So I looked up girl names with similar meanings, in case they’re willing to go beyond an I name and look a little outside the box. These names also all include v sounds–maybe not quite as perfect as [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], but perhaps something might fit?

Bevin: “fair lady”
[name_f]Elvi[/name_f]: “white, fair”
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f]: “fair flower”
[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]: “white shadow, white wave” (I think this would be a great way to honor an [name_m]Irv[/name_m]!)
[name_f]Ginevra[/name_f]: same meaning as [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]
[name_f]Livana[/name_f]: “the moon, white”

Iva or potentially minIRVa- not sure whether the associations of the goddess of wisdom would be of putting due to your Jewish heritage or not.

Iris?

[name_u]Ivory[/name_u] (this one is my favorite, plus it reminds me of a beautiful song called Dream, Ivory)
[name_u]Indie[/name_u]
[name_f]Ivone[/name_f]
[name_f]Ivette[/name_f]
[name_u]Izzy[/name_u]
[name_u]Isa[/name_u]
[name_u]Irie[/name_u]
[name_u]Isha[/name_u]

Iris
[name_f]Iona[/name_f]
[name_f]Inez[/name_f]
[name_f]Isabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Isabella[/name_f]
[name_f]Isadora[/name_f]
[name_u]Indie[/name_u]
[name_f]Isla[/name_f]
[name_f]Inga[/name_f]

how about [name_u]Issey[/name_u]? x

How about [name_f]Ivanna[/name_f]? It’s got a beautiful meaning, and [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] feels like a very natural nickname?

Livy is a favorite of mine with a similar sound to [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]. [name_f]Liv[/name_f] is also nice.

I also quite like Mirva that has got [name_m]Irv[/name_m] in it  nn [name_f]Miri[/name_f] (love [name_f]Miri[/name_f] on it’s own as well) and I think Mirva is a form of [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] which is a traditional Jewish name.

Good luck finding your name!

Has anyone suggested [name_f]Irina[/name_f] yet? As in, [name_f]Irina[/name_f] Shayk?

I also like [name_f]Viola[/name_f] “[name_f]Vi[/name_f]”.

Such a bummer about [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]. I love [name_f]Iris[/name_f], too. “I” names are some of my favorites lately.

Based on [name_m]Irv[/name_m]'s meaning, “handsome, fair of face:”

Also, Irving, “green river, sea friend”

[name_f]Chloe[/name_f] = young green shoot
[name_f]Bianca[/name_f] = fair
Maria = drop of the sea

I’ll come back later with more suggestions!

Iris is the first that comes to mind. Some others I like are:

Isla
[name_f]Isabella[/name_f]
[name_f]Isobel[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f]
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f]
[name_f]Ileana[/name_f]

I also thought [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] might help, then you can always call her [name_f]Minnie[/name_f] as well if you wanted.
But what about one of the names you liked together that didn’t fit the criteria with a middle name like [name_m]Irving[/name_m] possibly? Like [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_m]Irving[/name_m]?

I like …
[name_f]Imogene[/name_f]
[name_f]Ilse[/name_f]
[name_f]Isobel[/name_f]
[name_f]Ivanna[/name_f]

I think a great idea would be to use a name beginning with the letter V as a middle name so the initials are I.V. That way you would have a perfect way to get to the nickname “[name_f]Ivy[/name_f] or [name_f]Ivie[/name_f].”

For instance…
[name_f]Ilse[/name_f] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f]

How about calling her [name_m]Irving[/name_m]? I think it could swing girl easily enough, has similar sounds to [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] and contains your grandpas name at the beginning.

Not an “I” name, but what about [name_f]Lana[/name_f]? If they like but are worried about how [name_f]Ilana[/name_f] might look/be pronounced, [name_f]Lana[/name_f] is a great alternative and a great name. Bonus is that it shares the same meaning as [name_m]Irv[/name_m], “handsome”, which is very sweet and a great connector!

After reading the post I think [name_f]Livia[/name_f] nn [name_f]Liv[/name_f] or [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] nn [name_f]Viv[/name_f] could honor [name_m]Irv[/name_m] especially if he was an [name_m]Irvine[/name_m].
