You can get started at familysearch.org . It is a [name_u]FREE[/name_u] resource. If you have roots in U.S.A. (like I do in Puerto [name_m]Rico[/name_m]) you should easily be able to find lots of records. I found an ancestor ([name_m]Pedro[/name_m]) who was born in 1795! Good luck.

Lots of accidental repeats with children marrying people with the same name as their parent, and purposeful repeats in families too. I’m proud I managed to go back so far, my Gran wanted to know before she died so I worked really hard on her side of the tree. They’re not that fun though, sorry.

What if you have very little information to use to start? Lack of names, dates, places.

I have a very detailed family tree with many bizarrely named ancestors. The families listed here are either hillbillies who have been in the United States since the revolution or relatively recent immigrants. I tried to add some dates/information, but I have been working on this list for a while and I didn’t jot down the dates for everything.

There is a branch of my family tree that is big on repeating honor names and calling people by a diminutive of their middle name.
