Ancient Greek E Names Revival?

  • I came across Greek Girls names starting with the letter E. I have developed a warm spot for [name_f]Eulalia[/name_f] but I really didn’t know of any other Greek or Greek inspired names. So this site was fascinating to me. What names do like or think could be revived and work today?

I like these names because they sound pretty, easy to say and do not look like bad words such as Erata. I think they would make middle name options:

Evaineta (ev-ī-net-a) eu “good” + ainetos "“praiseworthy”
Evameria (ev-a-meh-ree-a) eu “good” + meros “part, share, portion”
Eukleia (eeyoo-klay-a) eu “good” + kleos “renown, glory”
Eumeneia (eeyoo-men-ay-a) eumeneia “benevolence”, ---- I REALLY Like this one!
Eunoia (eeyoo-noy-a) eunoia “goodwill, beautiful thinking” – Ditto with this one!
Eucharis (eeyoo-ka-ris) eu “good” + charis “grace” – I still like [name_f]Charis[/name_f] alone too!

[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite not listed is [name_f]Evanthe[/name_f]/Euanthe - good flower.

I second [name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] and I like Elaphia, Elaphina, Evanassa, and Evameria.

[name_f]My[/name_f] favorite Ancient Greek E Name for a girl isn’t on your extensive list, surprisingly.

Euphrosyne (Eu-FROH-zin-nee)
One of the 3 Charities, [name_f]Goddess[/name_f] of [name_f]Joy[/name_f] + Mirth, Incarnation of grace + beauty
A daughter of [name_m]Zeus[/name_m] + Eurynome.
Painted in Bottecelli’s [name_f]Primavera[/name_f].
Remembered in [name_m]Milton[/name_m]‘s poem L’[name_f]Allegro[/name_f].

Now Euphrosyne has been used for asteroids, butterflies, marine worms, and plants.
A [name_m]Saint[/name_m] of [name_f]Alexandria[/name_f], who fled an arranged marriage to lead a celibate life in convent.

I really adore this name because of the simplistic “[name_f]Rose[/name_f]” in the middle. I also quite like the nickname [name_f]Effy[/name_f].

Of your list I really like Evameria. Very melodic.

Elaphia+ Empeiria are really intriguing.

I love reading your posts VespertineRose, and this one too…some great names.

i.e. I like:

Euthenia “prosperity, abundance”

Evaineta (ev-ī-net-a) eu “good” + ainetos "“praiseworthy”

Evanassa eu “good” + anassa “queen”

Euphrosyne sounds lovely. I hadn’t heard that one before. Thank you for sharing that tidbit with me. The rose in the middle does add a delightful and sweet connection to the name. Besides Elaphia & Empeiria, I thought Eidothea was intriguing with the super cute [name_f]Dodo[/name_f] nickname. I love Evameria, it just sounds pretty rolling off the tongue.

OOOOOOOoooooo…[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] sounds beautiful and evocative! Plus, the readily available nickname [name_f]Eva[/name_f] makes it even more lush. I like that one. That one and Euphrosyne have to go on my list too! I just can’t believe how all such lovely names just go unnoticed. Now, that I am seeing all the beautiful names out there, my list of names keep growing. lol

I have a fondness for Evanassa, but I see [name_u]Evan[/name_u] in it and it throws me off at first, then I hear [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f] in which pulls me back in. I think that name plays tricks with my eyes and my mind.

I’m glad tto see some enjoy archaic names too. Please, Tell me your thoughts on this one:https://nameberry.com/nametalk/threads/153797-Sophonisba

Isn’t that the truth?

Someday, my list is gonna reach outer space. Anyways, I’m starting to really like Evanassa and Evarista (part [name_u]Ever[/name_u], part [name_f]Callista[/name_f]?).

I do like [name_f]Eulalie[/name_f] and Eupraxia, though I’d always heard that Eupraxia meant “good action” or “good practice”? I liked that it was sort of an active concept rather than good thinking… hmmm… I may not keep it on my long list.

[name_f]Eulalia[/name_f] is lovely.

[name_f]Euphemia[/name_f] appeals, as does [name_f]Effie[/name_f] as a nickname.

Euphrosyne is lovely, I hadn’t known it.

Eukleia is interesting but I can’t make room for it because I love Theokleia and kind of had to choose. Same for [name_f]Eudora[/name_f], it’s interesting but I like other -doras more.

Hekataia - I think I liked this one best but I would still use Hekate over Hekataia - I just prefer that Hekate is more streamlined.
Elpinike - this one is just fun to say.
Empedia
Empeiria
Hermaia - This is my second favorite but again I think I’d go for the simple [name_f]Hermia[/name_f] instead - I realize it not “greek” but a shakespear name but again I prefer it’s streamlined ness.

I would have to agree! Its perfect for a cat, it would surprise people and catch them off guard. I just couldn’t use it on a baby because of the [name_u]Nike[/name_u] in it and it being a brand name. Plus, you know people would look at the name and pointed that. lol

I didn’t think about the [name_f]Callista[/name_f] connection, that makes it me now

-Sidenote- I new a girl that I worked with who would claim she was right because her name was [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]. So Eupraxia could stay on your list, and when she is older she can always claim she is right because she is a good thinker and her name says soo.lol.

It’s a sad fact about [name_u]Nike[/name_u]… I love the goddess and would have loved the name as an alliterative way to honor my FH’s mother [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] (which I just never liked)… so I got [name_m]Victor[/name_m] on my boys list… [name_u]Nike[/name_u] would have a cool alternative for a girl… except well [name_u]NIKE[/name_u] makes me think of their dumb/brilliant thunder-thighs commercials - also I’d be loathed to give my child a name of a major international company… upside though: it would be really easy to find sportswear with their name on it…lol.

Your right! her name would be labeled on everything…Although anything by right of default it would be hers, whether she owned it or not. Can you imagine someone saying someone stole my shirt and it had nike labeled on the chest…Oh, you mean [name_u]Nike[/name_u]'s shirt? No I mean my shirt.lol…

Oh my goodness, I was hesitant to say it before, but I went shopping at a [name_u]Nike[/name_u] store, and one of those workers there was named [name_u]Nike[/name_u]. I asked her how she fared with her name and working with the [name_u]Nike[/name_u] company. She said it was a high school job (paid for her car) and made sells easier by name alone, but after a while it became old. She loved her name and the connection more before she worked there but the brand name did dampen it for her. She always made a point to include her middle name in case people were less incline to accept her first name. She went my [name_u]Nike[/name_u]-E on name tags or [name_u]Nike[/name_u] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] in person, Sometimes [name_u]Nike[/name_u]-J, the J for [name_m]Johnson[/name_m], her sn. I certainly felt for her.
